OMG, this is my dream come true, thank you so much for sharing! If you do cut fabric for quilting, it would be cool to see how many layers can be cut at the same time. Even if it's only a few layers this still beats cutting by hand!

I just cut out 3 layers of quilting cotton and 1 layer of Shapeflex interfacing in one pass. 10 mm/s speed, 50% power ;)

Awesome video. I am just starting the search for the right laser. I want to cut mostly cork fabric, wallets make tags, etc. Most of the videos on lasers are for woodworkers so it's nice to see your videos.

Right??? I also feel like women aren’t represented enough in the laser community. In my videos, I’m trying to show that this isn’t hard and has many other applications. That said, I do LOVE the smell of the lasers working on wood. Smells like a campfire!!!

Waiting for mine to arrive. I went with the 20W as well because I'm not going to be cutting really thick stuff. I already have a small CNC and a plotter, so the M1 wasn't going to be big enough for me either.

YES same. I don't plan to cut wood or anything thicker in my craft room. I personally have other machines that can do that faster with less power. The S1 absolutely CAN, but just for me, I'm tickled to just keep using this for paper, fabric, interfacing, and lightweight things. The M1 was excellent, but again, size. I needed something with a larger bed.

NB in Europe, the pass through is not sold here. Something to do with the safety regs and classification.

This is the one I got, but with the 40 watt laser. I’m a newby to lasers, so have been playing with cork fabric, cutting, scoring, and engraving. Is your leatherette a vinyl base? I want to cut on my vinyl (marine type), but my SO doesn’t want the off-gassing, even though we have it vented.

First DO NOT LASER THE VINYL!!! If it’s PVC, it’ll distribute acidic gas and ruin your machine (and lungs). Honestly the safest thing with vinyls is to just use a craft cutter. As for the leatherette: it’s laser safe but not for sewing handbags. Great for tags, patches and such but I wouldn’t make bags from it. I source it from JDS. You need a FEIN for your business to sign up, but very worth it! For real leather you need to use vegan tanned. It smells so bad though. I only engrave and score leathers.

Great video, thanks. Do you use the air assist on the leatherette? That is mainly what I will be engraving and cutting with my 20W S1 that is coming in on Monday.

Nope! I don't use air assist when engraving. THAT SAID, the one that comes with the S1 bundles has an automatic setting. It will still use a very small amount of air even if you toggle it off in the software. That's just to keep debris off the lens. On the S1, I've been engraving and then scoring the cut lines on the leatherette. You absolutely can cut it, but it has a LOT of char on the edges. You can clean it off with a baby wipe or wet paper towel.

@@fiercekittenz Thanks. I’ve been cutting the JDS leatherette without adhesive into ornaments with my F1. With two passes I’ve not had bad charring. I figured I could get through it with one pass on the S1. I wasn’t sure if the air assist helped even more.

@@atleatherwith the 20W you can totally make it around with 1 pass. I was doing 10 mm/s at 40% power. You could probably dial that in to be a bit better. For me I just decided cutting them was better.

@@fiercekittenz thanks for the help. My S1 should be here next week and I plan on putting it to work. I’ll have a couple of hundred ornaments to cut and engrave. One more question. Have you cut pieces from a full sheet? Wondering if there was a problem with curling? Thanks again for your time.

@@atleatherCurling with the leatherette? No curling there! Though I do use magnets to keep it down on the edges. Even around the cuts it's been fine.

I just cut it. Only super thick fabrics can be engraved and even then, once you wash it, it'll just fall apart.

Solid colors only. It won't cut through clear or translucent acrylics (so no glitter, sadly).

The dimensions of the machine as a whole are 30" wide, 24" deep. The work area inside is 20" wide, 12" deep.

@@fiercekittenz hi I do have another question. I looked on JDS; they only have the leatherette with adhesive? Also where do we source the type of lazerable leather for the bag tags in the outside of the bags? And also do you know how people make the tags that have the rainbow 🌈 writing on the tags? Ok that was more than one question. Maybe you could make a video about materials for lazer users for bags?

@@Thecraftyblacksheep When you look at the JDS catalog, look at Laserable Leatherette -> Leatherette Sheet Stock -> Leatherette Sheet Stock No Adhesive. It looks like their links may be mixed up on the page before, but there is a category for non-adhesive. Look up LLS101 - LLS119. Those are the SKUs for the sheets. LLSSET8 is the sku for a sample set. I could do a laser video specifically for bags yep! I've got it on my list. I'm working down that list as fast as I can :(
