I always love the short focus on the Jedi Temple at 4:05. It’s short and poignant, and it gives the message that the Jedi had finally been avenged.

I love how complete the newer music felt, like this was the definite end of the series. But it was interesting how the original portrayed Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Yoda as a trio of friends before Anakin's fall.

There’s just something so powerful about Luke’s expression while sending off his father. You can tell he’s feeling so many different emotions at once, and the music, coming full circle with the very beginning of episode 4, staring off into the double sun.

2011 version seems to be the favorite. It ties everything from episodes 1 through 6 nicely and serves as a poignant reminder that we never needed an episode 7. This is the Star Wars I want to remember, not what it has become.

When the actors hug on the set you can feel that it's more than just acting. You feel the legitimate love and friendship the actors share for each other.

1983: the rebels celebrating they destroyed an imperial station 1997/2011: the whole galaxy celebrating the fall of the Empire that oppressed them for over 20 years and celebrating that they're finally free, bringing a brand new positive era to the galaxy

I love both endings, 1983 ending is a more cultural-esque ceremony for the Ewoks, their celebration, then there is Sebastian Shaw standing there, we get to see how Anakin looked like without his burns and scars, and in his Jedi ceremonial robes, the 2011 version on the other hand, shows the whole Galaxy celebrating the fall of the Empire, the song has more meaning and is more melancholical, a true way to end a trilogy and give us a sense of a happy ending, then there's Hayden Christensen, showing that Anakin truly died when he killed Mace Windu, but then returned (thus being Return of the Jedi) when he, as the Chosen One, killed both Darth Vader and Darth Sidious, i hope he's finally reunited with Padmé in the Force Afterlife and they're both happy with eachother.

My dream ending would be 2011 with Sebastian Shaw in it. His benevolent fatherly look on his twins always gives me chills. A thing I desired so much since my father died before I saw RotJ.

I'm gonna say it, I liked that they added young Anakin (Hayden Christensen). Feels good to see him in these Jedi Robes, realizing he's free and was forgiven. A lot more emotional than seeing Sebastian Shaw imo.

Now while I prefer the 1983 ending, there's just one thing that I think I could do to make this feel like really the ending to Star Wars. We see Sebastian Shaws Anakin and Alec Guinness's Obi-Wan, but as soon as Luke walks away. Both change back to their prequel selves, Hayden Christensen's Anakin and Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan. That I think, would've brought it full circle.

2011 ending gets me everytime. I can't just help but drop some tears. Really. The tender music, these little bear-like creatudes dancing with all their innocence, soldiers dancing and Luke, victorious, watching his masters and his redeemed father looking at him proudly. Just beautiful.

I have fond memories of 'Yub Yub' because when I was in elementary school, our music teacher choreographed a dance to go along with 'Yub Yub'.

The newer music is so much more uplifting. Makes me well up almost every time 😊

The celebration music change as well as adding Bespin, Tattooine & Coruscant were added in the 1997 Special Edition while adding Naboo & replacing Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen as Anakin's Force Ghost were added into the 2004 DVD.

I haven’t seen the original in years!! I’m old enough to remember watching Star Wars in ‘77 as a schoolboy. The ending, although kinda low key always felt satisfying to me. I think people of my age actually thought this was the end!!

This is an interesting side note but I absolutely love that Wedge was included in the celebration montage of both endings. Wedge is by far one of the most underrated Star Wars heroes, he was arguably just as important to blowing up the second Death Star as Lando Calrissian and Nien Numb were.

The addition of more sound in the 2011 version does a subtle job but adds so much camaraderie, you can practically feel it. Instead of just silence and music, you can hear Han and Lando laughing as they embrace; Chewie's roars are louder and crisper, even a few of the extra hugs can have their slaps and pats heard, and during almost all of it, you can hear the whole cast's laughter and chatter in the background. You can hear the happiness of the people and characters we've come to know and love, and that makes the scene feel so much better.

I love the detail of the red communist style banner on Naboo at 3:40 for the liberation from a brutal fascist dictator.

The 2011 version showing prequel locations like Naboo and Coruscant really ties up both trilogies as a whole. Thank you George Lucas for creating such an amazing story.

I just like the 2011 one better. Within a few seconds, Hayden made sure we felt the love Anakin had for the children he never come to know as a father. It's beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.

I get goosebumps during the 2011 ending when i see the jedi temple in the background and than I see Anakin's force ghost. It really sends a message that people can be redeemed and deserve a second chance whether it is in life or death.

I love the 2011 version more cuz the music is more touching for an ending, the scenes of all the galaxy celebrating the fall of emperor Palpatine's tyrany are perfect, they help to conect with everything that we've seen till this point and having Episode III Anakin as a force ghost goes better with it since this was the way he look right before he got tainted by the dark side.

When I was a kid we had the special editions on VHS and for the longest time I thought that was the original ending music in ROTJ. I finally saw the original version on tv when I was like 15 and thought I was crazy for remembering it differently.

Honestly, the thing that makes the original the best to me is the pure happiness, pride, and joy on older Anikans face for his son when we see him in his glowing form. So much more impactful and beautiful!

Two things about 1983 that I like better: The Song and the fact that Vader is the face that Luke knew (nothing against Hayden Christensen). I do like the added celebration scenes from 2011.

Obviously the 2011 there’s a lot more incredible “art” going on but what I really like is how Hayden appears cause after what we’ve seen (now) in 1-3, he’s the Anakin we’ve all grown to love… or hate. But love the fact that Luke can look upon his bad ass “good” father finally.

2011 was cool because it connected it back to the prequels.

2011 was the perfect ending to the empire, Deathstar 2 gone, Palpatine and Vader gone, whole galaxy celebrating and then they just ruined it by bringing back the empire in the form of the First Order w/ another Death Star . Why couldn't they just have a new threat?

This is one of the few places where I think they really did better with the changes, it does tie in with the other movies much better

I still remember seeing Coruscant for the first time in the Return of the Jedi special edition was pretty outstanding. Having read countless Star Wars novels that involved the planet, seeing it in short animated sequences in games like TIE Fighter and stylized renders in comic books art to finally seeing it in living color on the big screen was actually quite something to behold and got me really fired up for the prequel trilogy and the Phantom Menace which was - at the time - still about two years away.

If Vader hadn't died, just imagine the reactions of all the rebels on Endor because he has in some way shape or form fucked them over. Even though Luke redeemed him, Vader still killed his aunt and uncle, his mentor, and cut off his right hand. Then you have Leia, who Vader tortured for information and then destroyed her home planet. Then all of a sudden, she finds out he's her father. And then you've got Han, who Vader tortured and put in carbonite before letting Boba Fett take him to Jabba the Hutt for three years. Then Lando, who was just trying to protect the citizens of Bespin, then Vader just kept screwing him over and made him look like a huge, sell-out dickhead. Even fucking Chewbacca, who Vader put into a chamber with loud, screeching noises and since Wookiees are based around dogs, we can imagine he has extremely sensitive hearing. In all honesty, the only person who would have a positive reaction to seeing Anakin would be either R2 or 3PO, who just kind of knew Vader before he became a clunky robot servant with his dick burned off. All around, the party on Endor would have been more awkward than when Travis Bickle took his girlfriend to a porn theater.

I always liked the 2011 version better. Seeing the celebrations on the other planets and then going back to Endor was a great touch. Also, I found the music to be a huge improvement. I never liked the music in the original. I feel like the music in the new version is more fitting.

Man I was kid when they re-released these movies back in the early 90s. StarWars will always be a feel good thing.

The main change was in 1997 for the 20th anniversary. This was the version I grew up with and is my favourite because it has the new John Williams music which I love and feel so much more epic than the Yub Nub. But it also has Sebastian Shaw as Anakin Skywalker which, in my opinion, is how Anakin's force ghost should look like

There's a lot more interaction between Luke and Leia in the 1983 version, more beautiful, stronger and emotional. The way they look to each other and hold each other 😍
