Your question about HIM not being interested about educating his family, may not be a 'mystery'. It is simply a feudal thinking to feel that the royals do not need education (formal education) as they were born to rule and have whatever they need from the land and its inhabitants. Modern education was simply viewed for just creating skills to make a living by (by the way this is also all feudal thinking in other countries as well). So,. Haile Selassie may not have been interested in sending his children to school of higher education, although they had English and Swiss nanny's to teach them the rudimentary of basic 'finishing school' type of education. The Emperor himself was taught by private tutors hired by his father. The emperor really wanted the populace to have skills to run his kingdom via modern bureaucracy (which he believed would help to industrialize the country) and was very intent in establishing schools and personally overlooking its management. He even used to go all the schools on surprise visits to to distribute gifts-like oranges and grapes. This writer have seen him coming several times to the highschool either on schools days festivities or on impromptu visits while we were in dining halls to bring us grapes and cans of sardines. In elementary school, at the end of the year all those who became first and second rank within a class go to the palace to receive a gift of books, and during Christmas holidays the entire students body in Addis goes to palace to receive gifts of a sweater, panetonne cake and oranges. The royals helped out--the Empress and sons and daughters in handing out these stuff all day. Simply put, looking back it was a time when there was this sort of connection that used to be experinced between the populace and the Emperor. Now, as one looks back, it is clear that the Emperor never thought that these ‘commoners’ he ‘helped’ educate would question his authority. The emperor thought his supremacy would never come into question. We all know what transpired later. And now, to claim that Bereket talked to the Emperor about this and that is just a broad tale. This privilege was not available to the likes of Bereket then.

Several correction on this interview. Bereket was never a fighter and Eritrea and Ethiopia were separate even in the time Dr Bereket was referencing about Pan Africanism. Bereket is an opportunistic person who has been putting himself on the wrong side of the isle. He is still lost.

Amazing about Dr. Bereket. How he weaves outright fiction into his book business to aggrandize himself. Just to pick some trivia from this fictional talk. Take for example, the OAU first gathering and meeting (this writer was actually in Ethiopia and knew closely how most of the things he talks about happened or did not happen), his talk about Ethiopian women calling Benbella (the President of Algeria) this or that is a pure fiction. Also, Bole airport has not even been completed then, half of the airport was still under construction although it was partially used during the first OAU meeting summit in Late May and June 1963, To say that there were Muslims who came to the airport to welcome and chant 'Nassar' is made up and not credible. Again, this is based on first hand knowledge, as both sites were intimately known to this writer. Besides, the Emperor made great effort to pull this off and would not have tolerated such behaviors, simply the chanters would have been thrown into a dungeon, as it was a very important event for HIM and the charm offensive was in high gear. At the time, there was no consensus by African leaders as to where the OAU should be established and it was controversial to have it in Ethiopia. But Westerners and particularly US and Western European wanted the organization to be in Ethiopia and maneuvered their handful client states to have it Ethiopia. That is a different historical issue all together. So, the Emperor was using all means to sort of be a good host. If he was truthful and a real scholar, he could have discussed and analyzed that. But he just one who got his education in law and that was it. But, it is simply amazing that Bereket continues to write some of this rubbish books. It looks like it is a psychological issue with him. Elias these books do not have genuine 'human element'--they are literally fiction. Now, take this talk about going with Mesfin Wolde Mariam to tell the Crown Prince that he take over the kingdom is another concoction. Indeed, if Mesfin was alive he would have a lot to say about Berket’s character. Amazing and shameless. Bereket has been involved in some historical events, but it is so despicable that he is conning people into viewing him as a 'historical' truth teller and an intellectual. As being a freedom fighter, it is a joke. Eritrea has many heroes and gallant freedom fighters who brought sovereignty. He represents those few who tried to cash in and were rebuffed (yes, the great struggle of Eritrea has to put up with ambitious men the likes of Bereket also). At this age, why he keeps doing this is a mystery. Now, he wants to say that he has intimate knowledge of Ethiopian government even of the Emperor himself, since most of his contemporaries are all gone now. Kassahun Chicole is another business man who keeps churning these books for profit..

Yes,the good or proper tasks of Professor Bereketeab Habteselassie are less/ put in comparison to those of his bad or improper ones/ when seen from the very perspective of the interest of Ethiopia..He should not have been part of the struggle for the freedom of Eritrea that at the end of the day ended up with the secession of same from its motherland,while strongly and interestingly giving his support for the African independence and unity.It was and still is a pure paradox of or for him to do so.Standing on this time being abundantly blessed with the golden opportunity to live long/91 years/,this very and higly scholarly professor of a very distinguished nature may not be bold enough to continue to justify the right nature of his struggle for freedom.Can he, for instance, testify,for sure,that Eritrea and Eritreans have practically benefited from their departure from Ethiopia?And at the same time,did he heartily accept and or welcome the choice of"netsanet weys barnet"(freedom or slavery) offered to Eritreans before they moved to vote for or against the referendum made for the secesion of Eritrea fom Ethiopia then?Does he assure now he was not happy with his being Ethiopian? I am not clear why journalist Elias did decline to raise to the professor such and such questions and try or attempt to secure his response.In general,there ,I believe,is no wrong with the journalist to invite him to his media and make him his guest.If he meets him for second time,it will be good if he raises these questions to him and get his remarks if he is a neutral journalist or the one who did not clearly support the referendum.
