A nine-year-old girl panicked after realizing her seat wasn’t buckled on a fair ride in Mobile, Alabama. In an interview with WKRG, a director for the Greater Gulf State Fair said the “primary safety device” was engaged, but the safety buckle was not. Ride operators will receive additional training following the incident.

The ride doesn’t start unless all the restraints are locked. The “seatbelt” isn’t any form of restraint, it’s a measurement to prevent guests that are too large to safely ride the attraction from riding. Still scary asf if you don’t know that and see the belt unlocked, but the belt being buckled or not has nothing to do with the kids actual safety

this is a real problem. the workers won’t pay attention to real screaming or won’t stop the ride bc they just assume someone is scared and not actually in danger. when i was in 5th grade they let me on a ride that i was tall enough for but just way too skinny to ride. there was a lap bar but the sides were open. even at the lowest the lap bar was too high and so i started falling out but the guy next to me held onto me while we screamed for the employee to stop the ride but they never did. i owe that man my life for his kindness but we seriously need to fix this.

@@DrAngelKins yes but i was a very skinny kid and had no idea that i would have any issue in the ride as i had no prior issues on rides. the operator should at least attentive enough to check that children are safely secured in the ride. additionally they should always pay attention to the ride that is being operated so they are ready to stop the ride if necessary.

@@cementmixer13many times the operators on these rides can be as young as 16. I'm sure they try their best but they're not professionals and many of them are teenagers. They can only do so much tbh. Just coming from someone who used to work at a medium sized amusement park. They don't generally employ adults to do this because it doesn't pay an adult salary, so it's a little sad but we can't expect them to have our safety covered 100% of the time. This is why children should go on rides with their parents if they are particularly small so the parents can make sure they are safe- I would not put their safety solely in the hands of teenage minimum wage park employees
@TheCompdept

There's no problem. The workers are fine. The seat belts don't do a thing. Not one thing in the whole entire world, all the lights on the operator's console or green for go because the safety of restraint was in its proper position. The belt doesn't do squat. You should really do a little bit of research on it and you'll realize how pointless it is

In 8th grade, I was on this ride with my older sister and it had a seat belt around your waist and over your shoulders. A couple seconds after the ride really starting going fast and turning a lot and going up and down, the shoulder seatbelts of my older sisters seat unlocked. Because of the speed, she flew forward and couldn’t go back. I was panicking and grabbed her with one arm because my other arm wouldn’t reach over and my fear gave me more strength. I pulled her back eventually and we both struggled to put the seatbelt back on and so the entire time, im keeping one arm over my sister and we’re both panicking. We ended up being fine but it was terrifying.

When I was a little girl I went on one of those caged rides that goes upside down because I recently at that time became just tall enough, somehow my belt came undone while going upside down, I was lucky to be sitting next to a teenage boy because he noticed while the ride was going and placed his arm over me and held me down keeping me safe. I will never forget that moment and will be forever grateful to him and only hope he’s doing well in life. Edit: for those who read this comment the ride isn’t the zipper. It was yellow. And it was a ride that wing upside down in circles, also this happened in a very small town outside in a parking lot where they held this small carnival that happened once a year but unfortunately stopped when they had no more funds. Just so everyone knows she was very much safe, these over the shoulder restraints have either dual hydraulic or pin designs incase one breaks (which is extremely rare) these mechanisms hold the restraint down securely either one of the two being able to secure the rider in place on its own, seatbelt restraints on most of these rides are unnecessary and simply there for peace of mind for the guest as they dont really do much. still, shame on the ride operators for not noticing, operators like these that cause these sorts of situations are the reason people are so terrified of theme park rides and should be moved or fired.

A boy died here in Orlando from the same ride. His mom sent him here with family or friends. I cannot and never want to imagine this horrible thing happening again to anyone. Edit: to everyone saying the boy I mentioned was way overweight… so what. #1. Most teenagers make terrible mistakes that they hopefully live and learn through. #2. The operator had a job to do. Period. Lives are at stake. I agree with everyone who said he shouldn’t have been ALLOWED to ride.

@@mykdoug748 Yep. I don't recommend looking it up, but then again I can't really tell you what to do. My curiosity got the better of me but I wish it hadn't! For those who are curious but don't wanna see the video (if you don't wanna know at all, just don't read past this point): A teenage boy fell off a ride similar to the one in the video (or that exact ride, I'm not sure) and fell to his death. He was too large for the shoulder restraints to be pushed into secure position, but instead of telling him this and having him exit the ride, they just let him ride without the restraint all the way down. The ride went all the way up, and as it dropped back down, it stopped like 20 or 30 feet in the air and he slipped out. Someone outside the ride was recording and it shows just that: the ride dropping down and stopping, showing him slip out and fall. I can't remember if the camera person never pointed at the ground, or if they did, but the view was obscured, I just remember that you can't actually SEE his body hit the ground. But you can HEAR it. That is a sound I probably won't ever forget. If this video is in fact the sane ride in Orlando, then they really need to review employee training on ride safety or something. Because this can't keep happening. I think the boy and his loved ones would have much preferred he leave the ride a little embarrassed than be gone forever.

@@mykdoug748 yes, it is horrifying. and @jaxyn494 is correct. The video shows the complete lack of interest of the operator to check everyone and instead is busy chatting to someone in line. While others on the ride and in line tell him to wait and check him, but he doesnt. Then when the kid falls out he just stares at him blankly as if he had no idea how it happened. Idk man. its a terrible video but very telling. Comes from improper training and ignorance to the consequences. Happened to my sister years ago, we were screaming begging the ride operator to stop, I remember repeating over and over that she wasn't latched in while I had moved to hold her in place. Other people were screaming too and we were ignored until the point where the ride tilted and he finally saw her actually falling out while I was holding her to keep her from hitting the ground {Luckily on this ride it would have only been maybe a five foot drop but I imagine she still would have gotten hurt had she taken the fall} The guy actually still let the ride finish since by the time he noticed it was almost over. He attempted to yell at us for messing around, but the other people on the ride screamed at him. Nothing ever really came of it that I know of, other than my sister to this day will only get on kiddie rides.

My brother is a heavy duty mechanic, he mostly works on semis, but one year he did all the repair work for the carnival that came to town for the local annual celebrations, the rides were in such terrible condition, with both missing and broken parts that he worked day and night for several days, almost a week just to make the rides safe. He said he would never go to a fair with traveling carnival rides ever again. Some parts had to be fabricated custom. He only goes to parks that have to get inspections on a regular basis.

Scariest moment of my life was at a fair. Me and my friends went on one of those ships that go super high, and we were all the way in the back and I IMMEDIETALLY realize im sitting next to a little girl whos maybe 3 or 4. The second we get in the air, shes screaming and sobbing and her dad was only holding her HAND. I grabbed that child around the waist and had my arm strapped kinda around her torso and held on tighter than ive ever held onto anything. He seemed so angry at me but her entire lower half kept FLYING UP. She ended up shoving her head into my side and sobbing the rest of the ride out. I was not going to let that child fly out of that ride. She did such a great job though, and shes obviously okay now.

Happened to my dad at 6 flags new england maybe 3-5 years ago, cant remember cause weve gone a few times. The bar didnt latch tight but luckily there is a seatbelt to hold it down as well at least. I just remember going up he just calmly said oh hey my things not even tight, welp here we go. Didnt really ever realize how bad that couldve gone or how terrible it was. He definitely got some air time in the seat as it dropped and was okay. He hadnt noticed at first cause he usually hugs the bars tight to himself as he waits. After the kid in florida passed they installed seatbelts like cars to strap in before the bars come down and the bars belt as well. Definitely feels safer now

let my clear something up. The harness (the thing that goes over your shoulders and over your chest) is the only thing that matters. The seatbelt which is referred to as the "safety buckle" here is simply a design feature to make riders feel more safe. It's not essential for it to work.

From my understanding the seatbelt is just to make the rider feel safe and is often not necessary and just a back up for a back up in case the first 2 back ups in the harness fail, which is very slim. It also serves as a visual aid for the person checking to determine if the person sitting in the seat can actually fit, example: the plus sized child who recently lost his life because he was too big for the ride and the harness didn’t latch, nobody checked him, and they didn’t do the buckle test. I say all this to say, though the seatbelt is often a 3rd back up, or a visual to see if someone fits, I’d still be screaming and losing my mind if I was both the child or the mother 😢.

He didn't want to have to stop and unlock it for everyone just for one person. My arms hurt so badly going upside-down and in circles... I was holding the arm brackets closed and hainging from them when upside-down pressing my feet on the floor to keep from coming loose Very lucky I didn't fall out. I screamed at the employees after getting off and they were only too happy to escort me immediately out of the park. Sounds like what happened to your cousin wasn't the same thing at all. Those seat belts don't do squat to hold you in place. It's the shoulder harness that does all the work. If the kid was coming out of the chair then it was because he chose to get on a ride. He's too small for and probably faked his height or size or a moronic employee allowed him on when he was too small. But that seat belt wouldn't be the reason whatsoever. It doesn't do anything. Even if the belt is just a extra safety thing it should ALWAYS be checked and if you are unsure of where you started go another lap and check it twice. Safety always goes first no excuses!! For a large majority of rides, especially ones that have a belt that clips into the restraint, like seen here, the belt serves two purpose, the main purpose is to be a go or no go, if the seatbelt cant be buckled, the rider cant ride, its secondary purpose is to be a redundant restraint. Most over the shoulder restraints are of a double ratcheting type, which already makes them redundant, the seatbelt adds an extra precaution in the extremely rare case both ratchets fail.

I thank God for them all the time. When the ride stopped the lady and her son punched the guy because he said nothing happen to me so it was fine and it ticked her off soo bad . This happened to my young son in Huntsville Alabama. The ride was "Spaceshot" and the strap didn't latch and fell out of the horseshoe restraint. Had I nod reached through my horseshoe and held him, he would have fallen under the restraint. I managed to get the strap in my hand as the ride launched. Finally, the teenage operator saw me holding him and brought the ride down. This terrified me to put it mildly and I would NEVER got on one again.

This also happened to me! Was on a choir trip and got on the drop ride, Scream at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. I can be shy in large groups, especially in high school, and it was hard to speak up but I knew I had to. The bottom of the shoulder safety restraints went over twice as high as everyone else’s, about to my neck. I was a veteran of the Dungeon Drop at Six Flags Astroworld at the time, so I was familiar enough to know something wasn’t working the way it should. I patted the leg of the girl next to me and said that this isn’t right, as I raised it to show how high it went. She freaked out and started screaming to stop, and then the other 2 people on our row did too. About a quarter of the way up the guy noticed and was annoyed at first but once he shielded his face from the sun and actually saw, he gasped and I could just tell by his overall reaction that it wasn’t good. He nodded his head as he darted to bring it back down. I am still shy sometimes but I definitely speak out when safety or other basic needs are at risk.

Someone already mentioned it in the top comment, but rides like these really do need some kind of system that prevents it from starting if it senses even one seat belt unbuckled. You can't always trust that all ride operators will check or double-check and lord knows what would've happened if they didn't see it nor hear the mother. The primary belt is the main thing that holds you in place, yes, but the secondary belt is there IN CASE it fails.
@SmallSpoonBrigade

These ride typically will have a system like that. The over the shoulder restraint is doing all of the real work, and that's the restraint that will not allow the ride to go if not locked. Almost flew out of a ride when I was 8. It was one of the rides that lifts up, then turns to its side at an angle, slightly tilted towards the ground and spins. I was holding onto the bar, that had come loose, for dear life. Every time we hit the highest point of the ride, my body would go over the bar and I would straighten my legs to use my shins to keep me from going completely past the bar. The girl in front of me was desperately trying to grab onto me and the guy behind me twisted his body in an awkward position since our backs were initially facing each other and he was doing everything he could to hold me down by the little bit of my clothing that he managed to grab. I believe I was so scared I couldn't even scream. Multiple people were screaming to stop the ride, screaming "she's falling out" I have had a really difficult time with heights ever since. Can't even go 2 steps up a latter without panicking. I always forget there was a time in my life where I actually really liked heights and it didn't scare me.

I remember how terrified my mom was when the ride finally ended because she thought I was going to fly out.
