One late, late, correction thanks to my patron Tony Brookes. The optical connection on the back of the unit is optical input - so the only things you can connect to it are digital sources like your TV or digital streamer with an optical output. You can not connect an external DAC to WXA-50 and use it only as a streamer. You would need an optical output for that purpose and WXA-50 doesn't have one. If you need a streamer, you should look into WXC-50 which has that kind of digital output. I apologize for this mistake.

I own this one powering a pair of Focal Chorus-706 with a Yamaha NS-SW200, and the wxc preamp version hooked to a pair of (also Yamy) MSP-5 class A/B powered monitors. They Both thrive in my living room and my Homestudio. With the sub out (not an LFE channel), you can send more bass to it and less to your speakers, which can be a very good thing if you must stick your speakers into corners or up against a wall (especially if they are rear-ported). Doing this can also save WXA extra Watts for mids and trebles. Make no mistake, the analog input IS converted into digital signal (If you’re a Vinyl lover, don’t expect a full analog path, even in direct mode : this is a digital volume control) and the REC (constant volume) output uses a different DAC chip from the ESS sabre that goes to the Amp/Preamp output.

I've had my WXC-50 for a year now. Sounds great and for the price it can't be beaten. After the initial setup I downloaded M Connect on my phone, it gives better accessibility to Tidal or spotifys functioning and strangely sounds better.

For anyone interested, Yamaha also makes a version of this unit without a built-in amp (pre-amp only). Good for people who use self-powered speakers/monitors. The model number is Yamaha WXC-50 and it costs $150 USD less.

Thanks for clarifying this -- there's very little information about this all over the internet lol I was flip flopping between different small class D amps for days and this Yamaha looked perfect UNTIL he said in the video "Tone control only works in the digital section" because I plan on hooking up a turntable to this and I was like AAAHHHHH WHY but thankfully it wasn't an accurate statement and I went ahead and bought one just now

(Edit) A few things you need to know about this formidable amp : only Airplay1, in Bluetooth receives SBC/AAC but only transmits SBC, only one digital (toslink) in ; no RCA S/Pdif (i use a CYP AU-D2 or D21 to switch - the D41 has 4 inputs), no usb to host to hook up with a computer (only mass storage, but you can play file as a upnp through your home network)... One year in retrospect, I hooked it to pretty much any source you might think off. I’m not using the mass storage stuff so much, found out to be a bit cumbersome and had no time to rip my CDs to such an external hard drive. It has Spotify connect....BUT I’m mostly using Deezer, and the « do-it-all » musiccast app is okay, (said to be better than Denon&Marantz HEOS, not as great as blueOS)...but not that great. They included Amazon HD for other musiccast products, but not than one (yet).

Thanks Srboljub, great review, detailed and informative as usual. As for WXA-50: I got consistently good sound quality from it from digital inputs and over wired internet. Didn't try the analog inputs yet. I am using Canton Chrono 502.2s, which are not really efficient, but WXA-50 can drive them pretty loud in my 5m x 3,5m room. I will try other speakers and see what will change

Sounds a nice little unit! My dad has the preamp style receiver only version and an Iota-VX PA3 power amp. I had some smaller (60 series?) Dynaudio speakers I couldn't get pleasure from compared to the other speakers I had at the time, the Monitor Bronze 2's you mentioned. In his system though, they sprung into life like an 80's slasher movie antagonist you thought was dead. It's interesting to hear the integrated big brother is as impressive... I'd have thought the LS50's (oh boy do I love them) would expose weaknesses... But nope, it seems to shine! Keep up the work Srb, J James.

This is a great amp for the price and versatility! Love the form factor! The "enhancer" function is somewhat like moving from Class D to Class A/B sound character. From clinical and dry to fuller and warmer sound. My only gripe with this is that without using the app to switch source, it's hard to know what to switch to by the LED colors. I no longer have the remote 🤣

Thank you for the review, especially about mentioning speaker parings, very valuable! Btw, even the analog input goes thru ADC(pcm9211), various digitally controlled analog switches, and out thru the DAC(sabre9006). So, it's not a direct, analog only connection. I would not recommend it to purists!

Another great review, and since one of the items I might want to check out in future are LS50's it's great to hear the WXA-50 is capable enough to power them. This was actually something I didn't expect, and one fact I was very curious about. I bought my amp secondhand and it came with no remote. I guess the previous owner felt the same and flushed it down the toilet 😉. Thnx, and keep up the good work!

I have been using the WXA-50 for a couple of years with some old PSB Alpha speakers, and I decided that I wanted better audio quality. I recently acquired KEF LS50 Metas and they sound great! The obvious reason for the lack of remote control luxury is that Yamaha intends on their users to use the app. It's 2021, I believe remote controls are going to disappear and all be replaced with apps and voice commands. Just my thought...I don't mind the cheap remote (which you nailed the analogy! :)...This for me will be to provide input and amplification to my outdoor speakers. The remote won't even be used in the backyard.

I could forgive the buggy software and muddy flat sound stage for the price but the unforgivable thing is if the firmware gets corrupted it can cause failure of your amplifier as it did with mine.I think it's best to keep this device as a streamer and use a separate preamp given how bad the musiccast software is.with the firmware being corrupted so was the volume control and the gain. If you are relying on this device alone for control of volume you are taking a risk.

Masterful HiFi terminology that made perfect sense. Very impressive review 👍 Another class D Amp that's impressive, and (I feel) a game changer especially at its price point is the SMSL DA-9 ... It can drive 2ohm loads and is VERY musical. It's half the price of the Yamaha, though minus a DAC. Would love to hear your views if you ever get the chance.

I used to be heavily into mid-fi setups but haven't bought anything new since the advent of BR/HD DVD. From what I see of the rear panel of this device; optical is the highest quality, direct, connection to the unit? There's no digital input besides ethernet or wi-fi? No direct lossless signal path connection(s)? Am I wrong in thinking that seems like a deficiency for an $800 unit? Am I missing something? EDIT: I ask because I'm looking to replace an aging AVR

I couldn't agree more with your review. I got lucky and picked this up used in the U.S. for $125 USD having no idea how capable it was, truly impressive. I usually bypass Yamaha's app altogether and just control it directly from Spotify or Tidal over Apple Airplay. Unfortunately, this product is several years old at this point and I don't think Yamaha have any plans to release new versions or upgrade this product line, it would be amazing to have a new version with upgraded bluetooth specs , Airplay 2 and upgrades to more modern dacs or a digital output to use an external dac. Occasionally here in the U.S. you get a refurbed version for around $350 USD.

Why is it so expensive when you can ge a decent amp, hook it up digitally or wirelessly to whatever you like and get superb sound quality? Is this doing anything extra on the audio or am I missing something?
@ericjohnson829
@ericjohnson829 3 жыл бұрын
@@maccagrabme I would agree the retail price seems a little high given it's age. What amp and wireless combination would you suggest that you would compare to this ? It's more than just finding one with bluetooth, but one that integrates wifi , Apple Airplay functionality, controls usb and network attached storage with a nice Musiccast app that ties it all together and can setup and control speakers in multiple rooms along with dsp settings and has a decent set of dacs built in. It's more like having something on the level of a Bluesound Node with a nice amp and Yamaha integration and quality. It's in a form factor that can sit on a entertainment center and control a 2.1 setup without taking up a ton of space. Some people use these to power a patio system, stick them in an attic or anywhere space is an issue.

Greit video that I have missed. I had the Wxc50 side to side with the Node 2i. Both sounds greit and alike but I went with the Node because of the BlueOS app and my Yamaha as2100 is a beast. I Really don't care about the lack of the low frequencies extension as few reviewers has one mentioned because 1:my Rubicon2 stops digging at 50hz and the Rel t7i does the rest. 2: the precision, textures and speed of the punches are second to none😊

I notice that the NAD seems to have few things the Yamaha does not . The NAD has a dedicated phono input for a turntable and the NADs line 1 input is a 3.5 mm which is very useful for connecting iPods etc . I know the Yamaha has an extra RCA line in to be used for that purpose , so it’s a minor thing . Also I don’t believe the Yamaha has an HDMI input. You didn’t mention these differences and I don’t know enough about hi fi to know if it’s worth it . Just thought I’d point it out,.

IDEAL KERNEL FOR A 7.1 CHANNEL EXPERIENCE ? I also wanted to have home theatre surround sound (albeit with lesser quality), but not compromise my 2.1 music experience. Found an old audio/video switcher with (D)SP AND loads of inputs (including 2*5.1....) and pre-amp outputs. Main left/right channels go to the WXA-50 (which also retains tv-toslink in), while center is y-splitted into two 200€ small Jamo S801pm (a bit bright, BUT good for dialogues), LFE uses the Ns-Sw200 dedicated input), and surround left/right are Focal Birds on stands directly powered by the audio/video switcher (which is fed by an HDMI 7.1 CYP C-PRO11SE8 audio extractor from my Sony Blu-ray player that has precisely a second hdmi out for sound). Had I the possibility of fitting in rear surround channels and not have active center, I’d buy the Yamaha XDA-AMP-5400rk and a Focal 700cc for even tonality. Unlike the XDA-QS5400RK which is 4 WXA in a 1-u rack, The XDA-AMP is basically just the B&O IcePower 125asx2 amp section*4 (8 channels of amplification). You can bridge any of these 4 (good for center channel with 2 woofers instead of one for the bookshelf L/R, dedicate a second and third amp for surround sound, and even a fourth for ATMOS for what it’s worth...all that power and fidelity for 1500€....with the durability and reputation of a big brand like Yamaha (I’m fine with DENON, EMOTIVA and the likes though, but class-D is a lot more efficient, compact, and yet, IcePower modules sound very musical while being cheaper than Hypex n-core or state-of-the-art Purifi Eigentakt - Especially when you want multichannel)

Don't forget that Sabaj makes a version of this amp too. And they also make a single ended version of it for much less money. There's slight differences between them, but they all use the same class D modules from Infineon as I'm 99% sure. Balanced is not really needed, unless you need to have your source (like your DAC for instance) very far from the amp. Certainly not for the premium it cost (Sabaj single ended one is about $110US less money). And I own a Sabaj D5 DAC myself. They make good stuff. No problems at all with it, and it sounds quite good actually. I'm going to try one myself eventually, and I'll probably get the single ended Sabaj over myself, even though I can easily afford the balanced one. Just because it seems like a waste of perfectly good money to me. Money I could spend on something else that will substantially improve the sound quality. Either way. Good luck. ✌️

How would you compare this to a bluesound powernode 2i for sound and app usability? Bluesound is more expensive but seems to be the easier to use and also has more streaming app options in the blueos app?

10:34 Listening to that album through: computer -> spdif Arcam rDAC -> CI Audio Headphone Amp -> Beyerdynic DT770 250Ω; impressive, not the Robert Miles I was used to. 11:10 You've just described the mixing/mastering of the album, sometimes the equipment gets out of the way. 11:48 sound's like you're describing a Naim amp; except your not because having owned some of these (and still have one, and a Naim headphone amp) the Naim sound is ultimately fatiguing and disengaging; this amp sounds to be quite transparent (the sound of transparency?). 16:00 So, adding distortion makes the music more "musical"; hmm maybe the app should have analogue tape plugins.

After watching a few of your videos, I'm now a fan and subscriber of your channel 😊. If I'm just after a good budget amp and DAC, would you recommend the smsl+loxjie combo or this yamaha all-in-one?
@iiWiReviews
@iiWiReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! About your question, there's really no easy answer, but I'll try my best. If you want to use Yamaha's internal streamer and DSP capabilities, it's really tough to beat when it comes to value. SMSL DA-9 and Loxjie D30 would probably be on pair given you add a proper streamer and a good set of cables... if you keep the free ones that came in the box with Loxjie and SMSL they would probably sound worse (less resolving) than Yamaha. So if you just want to connect and forget, I would suggest Yamaha, if you like buying separates, aftermarket cables, planing on upgrading any of these parts sometimes in the future... then go with separates.

@@iiWiReviews Thanks so much for taking the time to answer. Sounds like the yamaha is still the better value even if I don't need the streamer, once cables and interconnects are factored in.

Great review! No other such as this one, on the WXA50. In my country it goes for 455 euros. I tried to see if it can be done with seperates. It can and you get Class AB amps plus phono ins, a radio and more power from some of them. Lets see: A Yamaha RS202D for 210 euros. A Yamaha WXAD-10 DAC/streamer, for 150. Another 25 for a pair of decent rca interconnects. Total 385 euros. Alternatively, a Yamaha A670 at 230 euros or an AS201 for 280 euros. Also a Pioneer SX-20 at 220 or an A-20 at 260 euros. May be a Tangent Exeo Amp at 300 euros. Total 300+150+25 = 475 euros.

You're forgetting about sound quality though. I doubt any of those would even come close to keeping up with this amp. It's pretty special from my understanding. See what Thomas at Thomas and Stereo thinks about it, and he's usually playing with gear that runs in the tens of thousands of Canadian dollar range. It's one of his favorites. And there's no way a $150 streamer is going to sound as good as the built in DAC/streamer in this thing if it's very close to his expensive setup. Especially since it has the advantage of being built in. So no cables. I've been buying, and trying different gear for years now. I have probably $15k US worth of gear in my listening room right now. So I'm well aware of how these things go. It's not as simple as you make it sound. Now to be fair, it can be done IMHO, but not with the gear you're talking about. I would spend my money at Allo (India based company), and the Chinese sellers at EBay/Ali Express/HiFi Go type of places. They have the gear that can compete for cheap money. But it's still not going to be easy to get to this level for that money. And you're likely going to have to give something (or a few things) up long the way too. But a Raspberry Pi based streamer/DAC. And an Allo Volt D amp might do it, if you can supply the amp with a strong (about 22 to 24 volts, and as much amperage as you can get) power supply for cheap. And get a very clean sounding power supply for the Streamer for cheap too, somehow. Maybe a decent Meanwell switcher with a filter, or a capacitance multiplier might work. Fortunately the Allo amp already has a capacitance multiplier onboard. Another option, instead of the Allo amp. Would be the John Hood 1969 Class A amps they sell on Ebay, and Ali Express. Not many watts, but amazing sound, and a very strong class A power supply should make up for that. If you have 8 ohm speakers with a fairly flat impedance curve that is. Something like the Triangle Bro 3's, for instance, would work a real treat with this amp. But no remote, other then your phone. And no quality BT connection either way really. Amongst other things. He's right really. For the money. This is basically unbeatable if you're buying new. That being said. I just bought a setup for my girl, and went with a Marantz PM6006 ($425 US open box), and an iFi Zen Bluetooth streamer ($105 US on Ebay, used) because the built in DAC, and the amp itself has more connections. She is used to using Bluetooth. Plus I know what she likes, and she will like the Marantz sound better. It was a $700 amp originally though. And to be honest. The sound quality of both of these pieces shocked me. It sounds amazing! So long as you don't hook up really revealing speakers to it. My Kef R300's sound TERRIBLE on it! But the Triangle Bro's sound AHHmazing! 😁 What country are you in my friend? It seems like the gear is priced very fair there.

@@amb3cog I'm from Greece. Yes reasonably priced. EU prices more or less. I agree with a lot of your points towards buying used, setting up a Raspberry etc. However I believe the AB amp of the RS series is better sounding than the D class ICE modules of the WXA. The Marantz - iFi combination is a smart choice, but much more expensive than 450 euros. Only the 6006 is 470 euros here.

@@deyh5664 That’s a tough one. They may work together okay, but they’re both forward, clean, fast, detailed, and in your face sounding. If you really better enjoy that sort of sound. Plus you have a big room, and hopefully a well damped one too. They may work just fine for you. But if you like a more laid back, old school sound. Then I would say no. Not a good combo at all. Tight bass, extended highs, and a lively presentation sound great in theory. But it can get tiring very fast in real life, and may end up with you not wanting to listen to your system very often. This amp is a great deal, as are those speakers. Unfortunately they’re the same sound signature. So you had better really, really enjoy that sort of sound, and most people do not enjoy it. And if you’ve got bare walls, and floors. You may even hate it. Are you dead set on getting one, more so, then the other? Because I can give you a recommendation to make those speakers work, as well as the amp. Just not together unfortunately. A few quick questions to help me, help you. What’s your room like? Size wise, and furnishings wise I mean? What type of music do you mostly listen to? How old are you also? BTW if I had to buy either the amp, or the speakers. But not both. I would take the speakers first, because I think of the two they’re the hardest to simply swap out. There’s not many speakers that compete with those in the same price range really. Where as that amp can be replaced pretty easily IMO. Although you may have to spend just a little bit more in the end. Either way you go.

Few days ago I sold this Yamaha after 3,5 years of usage. Big mistake! I replaced it with Harman Kardon Citation Amp (was not delivered, when I sold Yamaha). Connected to KEF Q300 is it like day and night. HK is flat, without dynamic, without bass. But, Yamaha have problems too. I had problems with overheating, better cooling pads dont help (HK have problem with cooling too, each few sec turning on/off), loud cooler (external small fan help sound, but still sometimes was problems overheating). Yamaha cant turn on/off with optical input and dont have HDMI for TV connect for ARC/CEC using. Using Music Cast App was not simple (too complex path for DLNA, not simple switching input, playlist clearing, ...). Yamaha have external IrDa input, but they dont produce it and is hard to buy functionaly version (it must be powered, not passive). But sound was great compare to HK (and not only, I comparing it with Onkyo R-N855, older Sonos Connect:Amp (not actual Sonos Amp), Denon DRA-N4). It seems, that I buy this Yamaha again.

I am getting a pair of Metas soon, and I am considering the Árcam SA-10; do you think it puts out enough power to drive the Metas well? (I can’t really afford the SA-20 or a Hegel.)
