Fantastic, we need clarity on why the sudden departure as finance minister
@gallectee6032
@gallectee6032 Жыл бұрын
This has been clarified long ago. There was a referendum (a vote) in Greece whether another "bailout" (followed by another massive load of austerity causing unemployment, reduced wages, reduced social services such as schools, hospitals, unemployment assistance, pensions (which people have already paid for) and etc) should be accepted to repay the creditors (the bankers) who undertook criminal actions to grow their compensations to astronomical levels. The bankers did that while completely over leveraging their banks (too much risk) so that even if a small amount of these debts defaulted (those who had these debts couldn't pay), the whole bank would be brought down as the bank doesnt have enough cash to cover even a small amount of the risk (defaults) they held. And the bankers did that because they knew the state would have no other choice but to bail them out, and they also knew that they wouldn't be prosecuted. That they would face no repercussions. So practically, the bankers were allowed to make an insane amount of money and let everyone else suffer (the system that we all live in - whether you live in the east, north, and etc, is unbelievably corrupt). To put it simply, the vote was asking whether people want to suffer even more for the bankers. After having experienced a massive dose of austerity, everyone knew how horrible it would be to add more on top of that. So the majority obviously voted no. No to the "bailout". Since Varoufakis was finance minister, he was the one who had to sign up to the "bailout". However his prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, told him to ignore the referendum, ignore the no vote, and sign up for the "bailout" and massive dose of austerity. But given the mandate of the population, what the population decided, you know, what democracy is supposed to be, Varoufakis wasn't willing to do that, so he resigned. He didn't immediately explain the reasons for his resignation because he didn't want to add on extra damage. Later he did explain it, and this is why. If you are wondering why Tsipras ignored the peoples' vote, Yanis explained that it was because Tsipras feared that Merkel (the leader of the Eurozone - which is Germany) would throw Greece out of the Eurozone (Greece would no longer be able to use the Euro) which would've done massive damage to Greece. As announcing that you will adopt a different currency means that the currency you now hold is going to be worth significantly more than the new currency that is about to be adopted. So everybody would be running to the bank to move their balances, all of their Euros into another bank in another country, such as a bank in Germany. People would be liquidating all of their assets (selling houses and everything they can as they are about to be worth a lot less), and etc, and this massive cash run (more often called a bank run) would mean that the banks can no longer lend to businesses, to individuals and etc, which means that the whole system would collapse. Massive unemployment, no money for schools, hospitals, social programs, massive devaluation of assets and all the rest. But in the end, Tsipras was wrong to not follow Yanis's plan. Because the plans he developed plans were going to prevent Greece from being thrown out of the Euro. However I will not explain here what those plans were. The documentary will.

@@gallectee6032 Thanks for the insight, but didn't YV always maintain that going back to the drachma was a better option than Austerity with the euro . This was a major leverage as it would have cause a massive default in the Euro as he believe the EU was part of damaging Greece with its fiscal policies when they join the Euro . I suspect there must have been some serious life threatening threats to YV's well being for him to abandon in such manner, which I hope he exposes. Thanks for the chat.

Correct: it's capitalism or death. But to move beyond capitalism we need two things: political power and an alternative economic theory. Not sure there are any reactors like that in use now let alone run stupid experiments on them and being absolutely crazy on pushing them to the "disaster" point. And even so... The risk is so low and not what people would imagine that you really have to raise an eyebrow when you see smart people like Yanis pushing some utterly absurd propaganda against Nuclear. My first though is they get some money from some concurrent "sector". Everybody has to pay some bills somehow... In France were I live we have Mélenchon who talks even more absurdities about nuclear power. The biggest problem I see with critics of Nuclear is that they don't realize what it is mainly. That it's a by definition socialist way of producing power and enemies of socialism want this power taken away so they can continue doing what they know best. And they tap into peoples fear and hesitance to look into such a complex science and understand.

Well... sort of. Do keep in mind, Uranium is both a limited resource and mostly comes from conflict zones, France for example still has a colony it keeps a grip of so as to ensure its 70% of electricity supplied via nuclear can continue to do so and who gives a damn about the locals as France certainly does not. As for how limited a resource, well if you moved all fossil fuel electrical energy generation over to new nuclear plants you would need at least 10,000 new nuclear power reactors in the 1GW range, lofting at least 2.5 years worth of global emissions into the atmo just from the cement of doing that and it would burn through the entire planets stockpile of Uranium in about 40 years.
@zaelu
@zaelu Жыл бұрын
@@Nine-Signs As with most resources that are limited is not a matter of having access to them or not but of price. All resources are for sale for the fair price. And biggest part of unfair prices are a sort of forked approach on our beloved west that is not something to be proud of. A poisonous self feeding loop of bad management we are stuck in. As for second paragraph is just a paralyzing exaggeration. Of course we can keep it all on coal or oil... no problem for me... but do we really want this? 10 000 nuclear plants are orders of magnitude easier to make than the first one! And we came a long way from the first one in 1954.

What a liar! Henry George is the solution. The land crisis is periodic, one will happen in 2026. Read Fred Harrison for more information.

much of what he says is true - however - he had the opportunity to make changes that every party agreed on (ie reforming the broken bureacracy which is an oppressive force in itself in Greece) and he did nothing. All talk, no action.

You have no idea what you are talking about. You are example of how propaganda becomes personal opinion and pollutes public dialogue. Try to be objective in life

You mean FULL action until his Prime Minister pulled the plug on the Referendum's outcome, which led to his (Varoufakis) resignation. I have NO OTHER example of a politician in Greece who forfeited their fat salary over a dispute with the PM on the grounds of ethics and the good of the many. Please research and read history ACCURATELY!!

He was given a choice by his prime minister: ignore the no vote and sign up for the "bailout"/austerity, or resign. He resigned.

Which is bollocks as he resigned as finance minister exactly because of others doing what you accuse Yannis of. So I would suggest you have your head stuck somewhere moist and dark on that one.

Either we move beyond capitalism or we die. So what do we do Yanis ? Got a feeling you don't really know. But you're probably making a lot of money either way. thanks to capitalism.

😂 technically capitalism is dead. We're actually in the age of techno corporate neo feudalism where the top 1% are the lords and ladies and everyone else are the serfs and peasants

I get the impression you're intentionally applying bad faith here. Yanis has plenty of examples and ideas. The energy prices of Europe? Gives plenty ideas. Investing in infrastructure, green and otherwise? Plenty of ideas. I get a strong suspicion that you haven't taken even 10 minutes to read one of his articles, or speech or whatever really. You don't have to agree with his ideas or proposals, but claiming he has none, is patently false.

Just an opinion Simon, and a question for Yanis. How do we move beyond Capitalism? I know he has another book on its way and he needs to promote it and he’s done pretty well under capitalism. Just a lot of hot air from Yanis that doesn’t seem to produce anything. But as I said, it’s just an opinion.
