Thanks mate for excellent video and the tip about the fuel pump is worth a fair bit. I have a 3GMD which has a 3T72 engine whereas I think yours is a 75 bore. Had 2 washers got inside the engine from a loose air filter. Tip here - replace the air filter hold on bolts with larger ones that cant get through the inlet manifold and with captive washers. Had to replace gasket in 3rd world country. Supplier sent wrong gasket - history tells me it was a 3GM30 gasket (only found out when the head blew and I compared the old gasket with the new - unfortunately did not do that the first time!). Only difference in gasket is the cylinder bore. Possibly another reason my 3rd world replacement gasket blew is it appears the head bolts were bottoming in their threads. The end thread is shiny. So now am trying to replace all the 8 main head bolts with 8 studs and nuts on top - can see if the threads are clear and have brand new threads to torque down. In your video you did not mention compression testing. Videos on the KZfaq show compression testing with cold engine as a initial diagnostic - but should be done hot as well. Gasket Goo on the head gasket? Original manual for 3GMD says use 3Bond. Maybe now modern gaskets have a coating and do not need the 3Bond. My 3rd world repair sealed on 2 cylinders perfectly and it was only above the gasket over the reinforced part around the piston that it failed. The coated gasket was well stuck to the iron surfaces. The gasket blow was to the closest waterway. Now it could be because the lateral length of the gasket was not as much as it should be on a 3GM or it could be because of the bolts being tight due to bottoming or a combination. Mechanic friend suggest a light mist of Hylomar that you can get in a spraycan. Definately do not use the Goo from a brush bottle. When I get the engine running will let you know if my stud idea worked. Am going to try and check the compression but will probably have to make a bridge to hold the probe into the injector hole.

+Edward Popham Great reply Edward, I was not aware Yanmar made the GM series with differnt bore sizes. I used an online parts list with explosion diagrams for my engine and similar models to get the correct parts numbers, easy when you are at home but not such a possibility in a 3rd world country. With regards to pressure testing this became an element of frustration for me, I did the primitive trick of turning the engine over by hand with compression on to see if there was resistance from each piston, and to feel if there was any difference between them after putting everything back together. Results were positive so I was happy. When the engine wouldn't fire I got the local Yanmar guys to do a compression test at great expense. They told me there was 0 compression on the 3rd cylinder which I didn't believe to be true. I bought a universal pressure testing kit from Amazon with the hope of testing the pressure myself because if I effected some repairs I didn't want to pay again for another test. The kit arrived but it wouldn't attach properly to my engine as all the different fittings were made for glow plug holes which the GM series does not have. I managed to get something to hold it in place over the injector ports and could get the pressure gauge to at least show something for each piston. With this information I went back to Yanmar and said 'what the hell!?' He told me he had done a leak down test not a compression test. Fine, but this is a 15 year old engine not a brand new one like the ones in all his brochures, I just want it to drive my 1970s boat in and out of the marina. I didn't really want to take his advice or buy his services anymore and I just use them as a source for parts now. I think the compression on my third cylinder is indeed less than the others but each piston turns over the engine independently at tick over so I am happy. The next job (and hopefully video) will be of a bottom end rebuild, I will take the engine out of the boat and replace all the piston rings. I already bought a new head gasket for that job as I saw one at a great discount online.

Thanks Dan for your offer. I have had good service from Toad Marine in US but Yanmar does not allow them to export so have to get supplies via DHL office in USA. Interested to know if Netherlands supplier is allowed to export. How did you go with the salt deposits in the engine block? Another point in the manual - retorque head of a new engine immediately before putting into service - and retorque after first 50hours. (I failed to do that - may have caused my head gasket to blow?). Its back on now with all studs. Had to cut about 13mm off the studs to allow the rocker shaft to fit in and the rocker box to fit on. Before putting the manifolds on I have to paint the engine. I have been talking about 3GMD for exactness. I previously had a 3GMF which has a identical engine. My understanding that 3GM30 is a bigger bore higher power version of the 3GMD. When I changed from the F (fresh water version) to 3GMD salt water version I did so on the recommendation of a experienced Yanmar distributer and reconditioner who suggested that the 3GMD was less complicated provided the anodes were changed regularly. I have used antisieze grease on the 3 anode plugs and removed the standard Yanmar fuel filter in favour of a CAV setup with glass sediment bowl. I also have a electric pump instead of mechanical but my tank gravity/siphon feeds so I only need the pump for bleading. (much easier to bleed with a electric pump). The twin filters in series are from the main tank. The auxiliary/emergency tank has a filter which feeds separately to the injector pump by gravity feed. (Strictly a bit of a fire hazard).

The external oil pipe feeding pressure oil to the cylinder head can rust through particularly in a marine installation. Worth painting it up well even if installing a new one. Applies to 3GM series - maybe some others as well.

+Edward Popham The best thing about rebuilding this engine is that I now have a much greater understanding of the arteries and veins which keep the engine running and I am confident I could fix it in a pinch. Great to have some comments from you Edward, if you need some Yanmar parts sourced from the Netherlands I'm your man.

Good video and like this kind of report of doing yourself jobs very much! First i thought that it would be almost impossible to restore the engine. It seems that it had been running on heavy fuel oil or so and polluted and wasted the engine quite well. I was wondering at 22.10 of your video why you lifted the decomprrssion levers on the head while the engine was running. I have a 3GM30 (seawater cooled) in my boat too but never have them touched neither lifted, for sure not while running the engine. Does it have a function or could you test something?
@dtlx11
@dtlx11 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Arnest, better late than never with a reply I guess. The idea of lifting the decompression levers with the engine running is to see how well the engine is firing on each cylinder. I have no formal training so take this with a pinch of salt, but I noticed with my 3GM30 that cylinders 1 and 2 were providing the majority of the power and 3 was just kind of 'keeping pace'. This also gave the engine quite a heavy vibration. Cylinder 3 was not really able to build revs when running the engine by itself. 1 and 2 were building revs and working fine on their own. My suspicion was the piston rings needed replacing but me and my brother decided we wanted a newer, smaller and less maintenance boat as we both had kids on the way. Now I have a lovely little 1GM10 in our Sunway 25 which is fantastic.

When you adjust valve in 14’ .. when you put the mark 2 you adjust valve from cylinder 2 ( exhaust and admission above this cylinder ) or you adjust admission valve from cylinder 3 and exhaust valve from cylinder 1 ? Found 2 different way online ..

Very helpful video...! I flipped my JD 750 w/20hp Yanmar and it sat upside down for 24hrs. The tow truck came and pulled it out of the ditch. I tried to turn it over immediately; it just coughed once and locked up. I let it sit for 48hrs, and now it does turn over with the key, yet it is not starting, just a slowly dying battery, after repeated attempts of starting. What should I do; remove the injectors and crank it with them all out, or remove the head, or give it more time?
@danlucas148
@danlucas148 7 жыл бұрын
Bruce Wayne I would say the lube oil has leaked past your rings and into the combustion chamber. I would start by removing the injectors and shining a torch into the hole to see if this is indeed the case. Maybe turn the engine over by hand with a cotton bud down the hole and see if it picks up lube oil from the piston head.

Just wondering... What was the total amount of hours you put into this rebuild and how much experience you have with diesel engines? I'm about to perform a head gasket change and I have not done one before. Although I am pretty mechanically inclined and have all the manuals. I'm just curious to man hours.

Chris McLeod Its hard to say how many hours I put in, I did many evenings here and there and left it for a week or so more than once while I was waiting for parts or doing other things. If I had all tools and parts needed I suppose it could be done in a weekend. I watched the following video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9ZgaJl9vtzIgpc.html from another you-tuber for my original inspiration, I was just like you, knew a bit but never had the head off an engine. My honest advice is do it as now I know all the intricate workings of my engine and if it were to fail at sea I have the experience to diagnose and fix it. Be prepared to spend some money however, unforeseen costs will pop up and Yanmar parts are not only difficult to get hold of (depending on your location) but expensive. Off the top of my head I remember I had to replace a cross threaded bolt that holds on the rocker cover and it was €16 second hand. Any questions just fire away mate.
