A guide for hiking the Diamond Head Crater in Oahu Hawaii. If you enjoy hiking, then the Diamond Head Hike is definitely a must on your visit to Oahu. Originally built in 1908 by the Army, the Diamond Head hiking trails takes you to an elevation of 762 feet with impressive views of Waikiki from the Diamond Head Summit. From the bottom of Diamond Head to the top you'll walk a total of 0.75-mile one-way. You may also see Diamond Head referred to as "Leahi" -- it's Hawaiian name.

My wife and I were in Pearl this past Dec. to pay our respects to the sinking of the USS Arizona and the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I had been in and out of Pearl several times as a Tin Can Sailor going to and returning from Vietnam back in the sixties but never once stopped to pay respects to the men who died that day in Pearl and it had been on my bucket list for years. Anyway, I took the challange to ascend Diamond Head (and for a 72 year old, a bit over weight and not in the best physical condition it was a challange). Got to admit it was kind of tough getting up that big hill but something I'll remember forever. So happy I took the hike.

Thank you for this video! One piece I was looking for is roughly how long this hike is. To his credit, Chris did say that this took him about 30 minutes each way. A search on the internet revealed that it was 0.9 miles up to the summit with a rise of 560 feet in elevation. Seems pretty steep of a climb, so as I try to get beach body ready for Hawaii, I'll be mindful of mixing in some stair training! =) I just noticed that the trail is currently closed due to COVID, but hopefully it will be open by the end of the year!

Great video! I dont know if you've tried it yet, but if you come back to oahu definitely check out the makapuu point lighthouse trail! Not a very long hike, just a bit steep but once you get to the top there's an incredible view. many people also go off the path down the side of a cliff to the tidepools and blowhole below, it's a little more difficult but its still safe enough for kids to go down.

Back in about 1970 I lived in Waikiki for a few months, where I had as a girlfriend Barack Obama's half-sister Beth Davis (look up Frank Marshall Davis). I was from the Chicago area, but my brother lived in Hawaii for 35 years after his two duties in Vietnam. I'd heard that there were cool tunnels and rooms up on Diamond Head, so one day I decided to trek on up there. I took with me a canteen full of water, and I went through the neighborhoods until I found a spot that seemed good to go up to the ridge. On my way I passed a man raking his yard and he had a tangerine tree just brimming with fruit. He said I could take all I wanted so I took a few tangerines. When I reached the top I realized that there was a path that entirely circled the crater. I went completely around the crater, but when I was near the peak, I was able to experience the levels they show here, and the windows opening out to the ocean, and the spiral staircase that went to the very topmost point of Diamondhead. I'll never forget it. The amazing thing is that during my entire time on Diamondhead, I was totally alone. There was no tourist traffic as seen in this video. I feel so privileged to have been able to experience this at that special time when there was little attention focused on that crater.

What time of the day did you do the hike? I read lots of reviews about how crowded this spot could get. People said they even got turned away by park staff because there weren’t any parking left. They recommended going super early in the morning. What about late in the afternoon? Like 4ish? Is the weather going to be really hot and humid in mid December to do the hike during the day? Thx

Great video, with one minor correction. Bug/Mosquito spray would have been immensely helpful when getting to the absolute top of the lookout. the lower circular area was fine, but when we got up to the top part, we were absolutely bombarded with a cloud of Mosquitoes, nosee ems, whatever the hell they were. I mean covered my arms, face, instantly. Go down a few steps, none. We went in early June. Also, a hotel valet guy gave me a tip to check out Tantalus lookout, it's essentially the view from the other side of Diamond Head. The pictures I took from here were stunning, captured (panoramic) the whole crater of Diamond Head, and the sea of high rises and shoreline of Waikiki. Highly recommend, if you haven't mentioned it in another video.

I certainly felt like a "donkey" doing all that walking lol. I do think the diamond head hike is something you should do once tho. I really wish I could have gotten the chance to do the haiku stairs, or stairway to heaven. Tho an illegal hike, and now not possible from what I'm told due to storm erosion, it looked like an amazing view.

Yellow Productions I actually don't think it will ever be opened to the public again. it's a pretty narrow staircase. For the public they'd have to widen it, put in a couple of rest stops, an elevator, and a restaurant on top. Given all the liabilities involved, I think it'll remain what it is. Worth paying a $1k fine if you get caught? Possibly!

My wife and I made the mistake of walking from our hotel in Waikiki. I can’t remember the name of the hotel but I know is was close to the zoo. I read that there are shuttles that pick up tourists directly from their hotels to get here. Is it better to ride the shuttle or drive there? All of this was 100% off-limits until the 1980s, because it was all still controlled by the military. You weren't even allowed to drive into the crater. In the late '60s there started to be occasional public events in Diamond Head but this trail and lookout were still forbidden.

You can go up the other staircase that I showed going down that doesn't go through the tunnel.

Locals wear what you call flip flops (slippahs) hiking up diamondhead. Not a crazy thing, if you were born and raised in hawaii.

+Prince T Ok.. the locals are probably more practiced in slipper hiking then the rest of us :)

It's great hike but it would be nicer if they made the idiots with the boom boxes up there shut them off.

Kidding, but not kidding! I'm looking to find things to do in Hawaii for those who aren't "beach people". I thought I would hike Diamond Head (I'm not a hiker) but after seeing how tired you were, I think I'll put it on my "maybe-to-do-list"! I'll continue to see what I can do, besides just going to the beach. Love the Vids!!!!

Hah! Thanks AJ! It was really hot the day I went! There's lots to do in Oahu for not beach people. I highly reccomend spending a day at the Polynesian Cultural Center. It's a neat theme park and an awesome night time show
