Best part of this video is how CAT never abandoned you. His compassion and allegiance to you is impressive. My cat would laugh in his heart … and then look loving when he wants treats.

This song reached its peak in live performances much later in their career - suggest the Yessymphonic version from 2001

5:15 i always loved that buildup here maybe the most of this song. Yessongs was btw. the first album i ever bought myself when i was maybe 14 and the first time to the next big city with my older brother and without my mother. The main reason was at that time mostly that it were like 3 LPs for the same price than 1. But in the end for the next year or so, every day after i returned from school the first thing i did was putting "Close to the edge" on my ancient LP player, lay down on the bed, and listened to it 😍 Btw.: didn't knew there were videos from the concert, also at that point didn't knew that the sound was bad, since i really only had a very ancient mono player 😂

Sound quality is not the best but they played it well. I’m glad this footage exists. My favorite Yes live recordings though are the Keys to Ascension live recordings from the mid 90’s.

There is a story told by various members of Yes that the band never got paid for the Yessongs film. I had often wondered why someone hasn't stepped up and remastered this concert film, like someone did with "Queen: Live At The Rainbow 1974". Well, that is most likely the reason why.

I greatly appreciate you taking the time to revisit And You and I multiple times. Unfortunately the technology of the era in which it was first introduced simply can’t deliver clean sound fidelity. Maybe one more attempt with the Montreux recording will help. Please give Jon & The Band Geeks’ new song Shine On a listen. Evidence that his voice is timeless.

Sure appreciate the Yes reviews, JP. Trust all is well, and you're getting settled into the new place smoothly. Stay frosty my man. (P.S. There is an HD 1080p live version from 2003 on YT).

I grew up with the Yessongs version so I have some nostalgic affinity for this version. Yes is one of the few bands I prefer live to the original recordings. But if you want to here a totally crisp, fantastic version of And You and I, I recommend the 2003 Montreaux version. It's fabulous in all respects.

AGAIN when this was recorded and ALL we had was bulky film / audio recording equipment, we didn't TRIP too much because it was still the first time most people got to see them perform Live on an unprecedented triple album set. I am sure audience weren't too angry when they saw their first Talkie in movie theaters. LOL Anyway my main beef is over those you view this song as purely soft or Siberian Khatru as straightforward. YES rarely did anything simply. There are some serious complex instrumentations happening especially as it builds and intensifies towards the ending and that heavenly crescendo is the ultimate crescendo in all of Prog for all time!

Yes! More Yes...Yeah, tough audio, but You and I is like a fine wine.....and, read just the chorus, imaginative and emotive ...The synth interlude evokes a medieval scene in my mind.

I wish that someone would try to match the audio from the Progeny albums recorded in mid-November 1972 to the video recorded in mid-December 1972. There are seven Progeny concerts recorded in the eastern US/Canada from which to choose. Surely, for each song, one audio recording must closely match the Rainbow Theatre video. The camera angles do not catch much of the actual playing; the inaccuracies between shows could be forgiven. Just a simple wish from a simple man. 😉

Yep, the audio and film quality was frustrating to deal with even back when I first saw this around 1980 (as a midnight double feature with 'The Song Remains the Same'). But there were so few visual documents of Yes from the 70's available (this was basically it) that you just had to shrug and put up with it. You get the sense all Eddie Offord was allowed to do was record off the PA, maybe even just stick a microphone in front of a speaker -- I wouldn't be surprised. But don't give up on 'Yessongs' yet. I think this is the low point in terms of the audio. You can skip the solo spots which leaves a blistering "I've Seen All Good People", a wild version of "Close to the Edge" and a killer (although shortened) rendition of "Yours Is No Disgrace". By the way, the 'Sounding Out' film from earlier in '72 has better audio quality than this because it was handled by the BBC. It's more of a documentary than a concert film, but it's also worth a look, especially if you want to see what this lineup looked and sounded like with Bill on drums. Also, the 'Queen's Park' video from '75 has better audio *quality*, although the mixing is batshit insane in places. But do not check that out until you've heard at least some of 'Relayer'.

Different versions of yessongs, be it vinyl, cd..., differ in music nuances. I remember listening to this in 70s on which today would be inferior turntable, but it sounded fantastic.

Yessongs the album and film are iconic but the sound and vision are poor; their best versions of all songs are from 2003/2004, especially Montreux 2003.

No excuse for the audio quality. There's tons of 60s live recordings that sound better than a lot of Yes' live recordings, which includes the atrocious QPR concert for the Relayer tour. Such a shame.

Still one of my favorite songs of all time but NOT my favorite version. It's amusing that Rick still used 6 to 8 keys live when 4 should be enough for any song.

I'm not a musician, and did not have to cope with the advent of so many new keyboard sounds in the late '60's and early '70's, but generally think that things were much different then than they are now. Wakeman did not have the option of pushing a button on a fully digital keyboard and completely changing the sound emanating from the speakers. He was hired by Yes to replace Tony Kaye, who reportedly refused to explore all of the new keyboards and the electronic sounds they produced. So Wakeman was expected to produce multiple keyboard-generated sounds, and if he wanted to produce a different sound, that required an entirely new and separate keyboard. The ethos of prog back then required champions of that genre to demonstrate the explosion of new sounds and textures made possible only by recent advances to electronics back then. To faithfully reproduce live the studio sounds on those albums, Wakeman likely needed to encircle himself with racks of different keyboards. I'd agree that if he still performs live encircled by those racks, it must be for show now that one keyboard can have digital circuitry that allows for a hundred of different sounds.

When I saw them in 99 they had Howe and Sherwood on guitars so they could more easily split up all of Steve's parts. Igor had a lot of keyboards even then and he was great.

I always cringe when folks tell reactors to go watch the Yessongs movie because the sound is so bad, and the camera work is pretty rough as weĺl. Not a great way to introduce a new generation to Yes. Thanks for giving it a try!
