This is definitely my favorite version of "Yours Is No Disgrace." The extended Steve Howe solo improvisation shows his mastery as a soloist, with Chris Squire and Alan White going to town, backing him up.

Tales is different. Even though they sometimes played parts 1 and 4 in later years. I personally prefer part 2 since it presents a theme and then continually recapititulates it.

Thanks for giving some recognition to White who was such a great player. Bruford was great on his early records with Yes, but he was really next level when you consider all the other stuff he did with other bands and projects such as UK, Genesis, King Crimson among others and his own records as a solo artist and band leader with the group Bruford and later on Earthworks. As insanely good as White was, Bill really is more of a jazz drummer at heart. He was obviously more prolific and diverse in terms of all the different artists he played and recorded with.

Lots of great comments, Justin. Yes were never an improving band -- except for Steve's solo in YIND. He has never played that solo the same way twice. This also means some performances don't go so well! 😄 You noticed Steve was 'searching' during parts of the solo. In some shows that search would lead to unfortunate dead ends! But luckily for us they definitely captured lightning in a bottle on this night in Knoxville. BTW, a good early live rendition of this song with Bill on drums would be the Beat Club TV performance from '71 (with Tony). And I'd recommend you go ahead and watch the 'Yessongs' film. This was Yes at the height of their powers, and you're not going to find many filmed live performances that match it in terms of band cohesion and raw energy. In terms of live video, after 'Yessongs' comes the QPR show in 1975 (good for watching Relayer and Tales material), then there's a bootleg VHS of Glasgow in '77 (for GFTO songs), and then part of a Philly show from '79 (sort of a victory lap set list). Then you get to the 90125 years. Many people will rave about more recent live videos (and there are many), but the only one I'd endorse is 'Symphonic Live' from 2002, before Jon's departure. After that Yes became a casino legacy group with slower tempos and wimpy guitar tone. Bless them for keeping at it, and I don't want to kill any enthusiasm for checking out Yes as senior citizens. It's just a far, far cry from what you're getting on 'Yessongs'.

No one thinks of Steve Howe as someone who shreds, but he really is--he just does it in a way that is uniquely him. What I really like about him is the way he didn't just solo on a single melody line--he often improvises with two distinct voices like a lute player. With all due respect to Trevor Rabin, who brought Yes more fans than they had ever had, Yes would just be a blip of the late 60s and early 70s prog movement if Steve Howe had not joined.

Yeah man. Powerful snare and kick drum sound is imperative for Rock music and the Yes genre. Same reason why Zeppelin experimented with Bonzos sound, recording drums in the castle, the massive bass drum he used, etc. Loud and raw. Drummers are usually particular about their drums, specs, etc. Ludwig baby. At this point I'm coming around to the Alan camp. I will probably now always prefer these versions simply because I've been listening to the studio version for about 50 years, and these are sure not carbon copies.

White's cymbal work....as pointed out, he had virtually no time to learn drum parts before replacing Bruford. After that, it's no wonder he was with Yes for 50 years! Btw...Yes was only inducted into the R&R Hall of fame in 2017!...Zappa was inducted in 95' and EL&P still aren't inducted!!

Ironically this version of YIND was edited to remove the "searching" in the guitar solos. You can check yourself because the unedited version of this is on Spotify from the Knoxville concert off the Progency, Seven Shows from Seventy Two albums. It's also worth comparing the solos from this version of YIND with all the others in the Progency recordings, as it shows how different he approaches the solos at every gig.

Hi Justin. No-one should be barking at you or expect you to do exactly what they want. You shouldn't have to tolerate that kind of shite. Some people can be such arseholes when it comes to music. Anyways... it was nice of you to go back and give America a listen after all that, and I'm glad you liked it. I love the 'cowboy Steve' line 🤠 Actually, I think Steve Howe would probably love it, seeing as a lot of his guitar heroes were country influenced too. I love this full version of America - it's almost like Steve Howe paying tribute to his American guitar heroes, and that middle section is...funky. It's definitely a Yes feel good track.

Thanks for posting those tunes. I used to have this album and played it all the time. There was probably some remastering done since the 70s because the audio quality sounds better on your channel. I remember some of the background vocals being a bit more out of tune on my album as well.

Yessongs is an incredible journey that merits a pause for reflection before you continue through the heartlands of Yes. Alan did a fantastic job coming in on the tour and playing the way he did and he increases in confidence over the next few tours as you will hear on Yesshows. Also, if you get round to listening to any bootlegs from the mid/late seventies you'll find that they even improved on what you just heard on Yessongs. And You And I just grows with age, and Alan gets even more ridiculous on Close To The Edge and Heart Of The Sunrise. He's definitely one of my all time favourites and you were right to observe that he has a drive to him. He really pushes the ban live. When you get round to Tales From Topographic Oceans, I would recommend you go with the Steve Wilson remix as the original mix was quite muddy at times and Wilson done a brilliant job in bringing out all the layers to the surface.

Alan is great, picked to replace Bill by their engineers. The studio version is a little better in my opinion. You mentioned that it was almost jazz minus the swing. Bill has a jazz background and the song was written with swing in mind. Although I can't take anything away from Alan. He rocked it out.

Another great review Justin. Don’t disagree with you about the brilliance of Alan White on percussion and how important the drummer is to the band …….. but, along those lines, I consider Neil Peart of Rush to be the GOAT and Carl Palmer of ELP is right up there with him.
