Harry Greb, like other middleweight greats ... such as Mickey Walker and Sam Langford ... beat top heavyweights but never got a title shot. He did, however, fight Jack Dempsey, and the results appeared in several national newspapers.
(note: Langford did get one title shot; after that, every heavyweight avoided him)

For a good account of Greb's life and career, pick up the book "Live Fast, Die Young" by S.L Compton. A great general source of all things boxing can be found at boxingnewsonline.net/.

I’m a massive Dempsey fan and of Greb’s. I own a lot of memorabilia of Dempsey in my living room. I remember the excitement when the training footage of Greb’s first came out and waiting for the VHS to come out. Great vids you do thanks

Harry Greb is my second favorite P4P fighter . Jack Dempsey knew Greb would have taken his title if he had given him a shot . Greb vs Langford would have been the fight to see that's for sure . Love this channel ET . keep the video's coming .

@@georgevincent1834 Then why didn't Dempsey give Greb a shot at the title ? Dempsey gave Billy Miske , Bill Brennon , Tommy Gibbon and Gene Tunney all shots who Greb already beat . Greb beat Dempsey's ass so bad sparring he knew he'd lose if they fought .

In a real fight with the title on the line, Dempsey would have beaten Greb..probably by Knockout.

doubtful, Gene Tunney didnt think so. Greb was likely too quick too much gas in the tank for Dempsey

Greb got stopped 1 time in 300 fights in his 7th pro bout while still a teen! He beat a list of the same fighters Dempsey fought, only he always beat them much worse than Dempsey did! Some that Dempsey couldn't beat, Greb walked right through!!! Dempsey wasn't fast enough to catch Greb! And even if he did he wouldnt have had time to get set and would have had a standing still fighter like he needed! Dempsey only looked good against big, slow, stand still fighters! And always looked horrible against fast moving smaller guys! It's a combination for destruction for Dempsey!!!! Kearns knew this! And wasn't going to risk his cash cow getting beat by a middle wt! FACTS!!!

It is so difficult to evaluate these earlier fighters, as there is little video evidence taken or remaining. Fun to read about and learn about. Jack Dempsey was incredibly famous at the time, but may be the most over rated fighter in history. Or maybe not. Thanks for video.

With no real existing footage of him in the ring, arguing about how great Greb was is like critiquing the singing voice of an opera singer from the 10th century.

That's ludicrous!!! We have footage of fighters he fought and beat! He have his resume which happens to be the greatest boxing resume of all time! His style was quite amateurish! But, you don't judge a fighter by style! You judge him my accomplishments! GREB defeated more hall of farmers than anyone in boxing history! You don't have to see the bomb that made the destruction to k ow it was there! You can see the wake of it!( Grebs resume!) Wake up!!!

I agree with all of you but without films it’s impossible to really figure him out For those interested the new three volume bio of Dempsey, two are published, by historian Adam Pollack has lots of information and opinions about Greb. Mr Pollack , the books are over 700 pages each, quotes volumes on sports writers and others opinion and observations of Greb. According to the documented information Greb was a dirty as in very dirty fighter. Elbows, thumbs, knees, shoulders. The press noted he had no punch but as we know he swarmed his opponent with gloves , head, knees and thumbs . I have to wonder if by today’s rules he would be as highly regarded. Anyone seriously interested in Greb and Dempsey era needs to read this book. I’d be interested in your opinion of Greb and how he would fit into the boxing scene of the last 60 or 70 years.

Tunney did lose to Greb but came back to beat Greb in three more fights. Also Tunney beat an over the hill and morbidly out of shape Dempsey after Jack ditched boxing for a few years to try his hand in Hollywood while married to Estelle Taylor.

Greb was robbed of two of those Tunney losses! In front of Tunneys hometown! The only actual loss was the last when Greb came in already with cracked ribs! And Dempsey would have never beaten Tunney at any time in his career! Simply because Dempsey couldn't box! He looked good against guys who were big, slow and walked right into him! But put him in with a fast moving boxer and he didn't know what to do! Just kept wadding in, hands around his waist! No Jab! NO head movement! Just got destroyed!!!!
@Bruins-vq5ey
@Bruins-vq5ey 6 ай бұрын
@@blakegallimore5173 I beg to differ, a prime Dempsey had a good jab and excellent upper body and head movement, and he was fast. He didn't have much left by the time of the tunney fights.
