I still remember like it was Yesterday, I confessed to my older brother, I was 13 he was 18, that I snuck in his room, and used his high end stereo to listen to a bunch of albums, and we discussed YES, and I said to him "But there is no way they could play this stuff Live", and he reached into his album crate, and pulled out the newly bought YESSONGS Album, and placed it in my hands. After listening with critical ears, waiting for some flaw, I found none. This is my desert island album. I love the pristine recording for their precision, and detail, but as you said Alan White, such a beast on the drums, brings a level of increased Drama to the songs which make the Live versions come alive with energy. I got to see them do the classic set list in '77.

One of the best parts about Yes is how good they were live. They didn’t just play their songs verbatim to what is on the record, they went all-in live. To be honest, I didn’t really get into Yes until college (back in the 80s, because I’m that old) and it took awhile for me to appreciate everything. However, they created stuff that just keeps getting more interesting as you keep listening to it (with the caveat that not every single album is that way).

That at their age they could play this piece live, night after night as they did their CTTE tour, just amazing. I've listened to CTTE hundreds of times and it has been awhile since I've listened to the Yessongs version. I had forgotten the energy that you so rightly point out that Alan puts into it.

Bill pointed out how miraculous the original was considering the way CTTE was recorded 30 to 45 seconds at a time with gigs in between. He doubted that the mics were set up the same. Some of the beginning, middle and end sounds were a tape as Rick played a dozen or so keys to create them in the studio.

Agree 100% with your review with a few additions. First of all, I wholeheartedly agree with you this live version bests the studio recording. In addition to accolades for Steve Howe and Alan White, one cannot ignore the brilliant bass guitar playing of Chris Squire who truly kills it. Also, I would add kudos to the incredible backup harmony vocals of Steve Howe and Chris Squire. They perfectly meld with the unparalleled lead vocals of Jon Anderson. This is truly a classic live recording of an epic band. Thanks a lot for another great review!

Wow! What a joy it is to revisit Yessongs. This was my introduction to the band in '78. Completely digested it and played it constantly for nearly two years. In fact I was severely disappointed in the studio recordings of all these songs after experiencing Yessongs. Yessongs has a power and flow that is missing from The Yes Album, Fragile, and Close to the Edge. You can hear the difference in the opening of the live version of Close to the Edge. The studio version is a chaotic mess; the live version is focused and powerful. And now onto Yours is no Disgrace and Starship Trooper!

Totally agree with you regarding Allen White. How he was able to join the band with only three days to practice and learn the songs, then perform live is crazy!! You walked out of YES feeling as though you've experienced some other worldly profound out of body TIMELESS journey! And as a psychedelic era 70s teen, we NEVER after a year of deep anticipation went to a show without our friend ELLIS D. LOL!!!! And THAT just made the interstellar ADVENTURE simply overwhelmingly MIND-BLOWING!!!! sometimes taking DAYS to recover from the aftershock! Nice ANALYTICAL commentary of the MOODS being created along the adventure. The GET UP and GET DOWN section is when they deployed the DRY ICE FOG on stage HAHA. It was SOOO MAGICAL! and transcendent! I LOVE when they bring back all the THEMES condensed differently during the final dramatic climax! YES's EPIC PACING is extraordinary!

This is a near perfect live representation of Close to the Edge. Yes, Allan White did a fantastic job. I do love Wakeman’s playing. The only small flaw is that he wasn’t able to reproduce the church organ sound. At least not when this was recorded.

I think Alan White helps hold the chaotic bits together a tad better. He's more of an aggressive (and amazing), rock drummer whereas Bruford is more of a subtle (and amazing) jazz drummer. Bruford is accenting. White is anchoring. There's also a chance I have no idea what I'm talking about, but that's the way I view it.

Close to the Edge a sonic masterpiece. The chaotic beginning is the most impressive part. All playing different time signatures, very difficult to do, but it all melds together. This is called syncopation. Very few bands can do it, let alone write it. YES was the best. Do not underestimate Rick Wakeman. He's a genius. Give a listen to Cat Steven's Morning has Broken, which he played piano.
@normandaubry
@normandaubry Ай бұрын
I totally agree about CTTE and about Wakeman. Personally he is ma favorite keys player. His B3 solos on CTTE and Roundabout all my all time B3 organ solos. Emerson was probably even better than Wakeman, but I find that Wakeman creates parts and ambiances that move my soul much more, such as the middle section of Awaken, piano on Morning Has Broken, his mellotron work, etc. And sense of rhythm/pace/phrasing and his touch are so unique that I can recognize his playing on albums from other artists. A few years ago I listened to an old Al Steward album. In one song there was a piano part that was so distinctive that I listened to it a second time and guessed that it was him. I was right, even though I do not play piano. His playing is as distinctive to me as Bill’s Bruford or Bonham’s drumming. That’s not an easy feat on a piano! You can’t tune a piano to make it as distinctive as Bruford’s snare! AND he is probably the funniest musician/storyteller in the history of rock music!

I'm with you all the way on Alan White. He doesn't get near the credit he deserves among some fans, often brushed aside in their minds, by their preference for Bruford. Bruford was great, don't get me wrong, but Alan was a better fit in the long run. Bruford's best work came with King Crimson. And now that you can appreciate an 18+ minute song, I hope you will hang in there for what's to come next, over the following 2 studio albums, because there are some EPICS on both. I'm especially curious as to how you will react to "The Gates of Delirium" on the _Relayer_ album!

I bought Yessongs in 1973, way before the CTTE and Fragile studio albums and while Yessongs was already (and is still) my desert island album, those studio albums never ‘got’ me in the same way. Strangely that didn’t happen with The Yes Album which I cherish very much. Maybe it’s the energy in playing, who knows. Anyway, I’m sure you’ll like the last side of Yessongs and if you keep on listening chronologically, Tales can be a disappointment as a whole, though it does have it’s moments of pure beauty. And Relayer and Going For The One, well, I’m curious for your thoughts of those. They do contain a masterpiece or two to say the least. Happy journey!

Hello Justin. ☺ This Live-Version of CTTE is the best performance Yes ever done. So phantastic as here Yes played CTTE never again. Very aggressiv, kill drumming by Alan, masterful guitarwork of Steve Howe with great variations, is particularly worth emphasizing here the change of his Dan- Dobroelectro-Sitarguitar sound and the Gibson guitar sound (i hope you understand what i mean, because my englisch is not so good, I'm sorry) is here on this Live Version absolute outstanding. This Live Version of 'Close to the Edge' is, in my opinion, Light years better than the album version, later, they never played the piece as dynamically again as here, on this CTTE Tour, back then, these days (1972-1973). So I absolutely agree with you here: This CTTE Version is the best Yes have ever done. It's Amazing. The whole 'Yessongs' is a amazing Album - despite the sometimes poor sound quality - but what the heck, it just can't be changed. P. S.: and one more tip to finish off: You should definitely check out Steve Howe's 'Clap' on the Concertfilm 'Yessongs', it's absolute mindblowing', I promise to you. I can tell you that much now: this version of 'Clap' is absolute breathtaking. You'll be amazed. ☺Kind Regards Heinz (from Munich/Germany). Again: sorry for my bad english. 😕 🌳🥀🌱🌷❤✨

How dare you, Justin -- Chick rooolz! 😄 Yes filmed two shows at The Rainbow in London in December of '72, and this audio is the same performance as the 'Yessongs' movie. They did a bit of post production, but otherwise it's the same audio track as the movie. And don't apologize for liking the live version more. Most old time fans recommend newbies hear the studio versions first, but will agree that the live versions are usually better -- especially these. I'll say again that 'Yessongs' is easily one of the best live rock albums of the 70's, and I've heard most of them. BTW, the intro and outro sound effects, the cavernous ambient sound effects (water drops, etc.), and the church organ were all fed to the PA from a tape deck. As you can imagine things didn't always go as planned, and on at least a couple of the 'Progeny' shows you can hear that Rick is out of sync with the church organ tape. This happens again to Patrick Moraz in the QPR live show video, so it was a problem that bedeviled all Yes keyboard players!

@@heinzmuller159 Correct -- "Clap" is in the movie while "Mood For A Day" is on 'Yessongs' (on 'Progeny' he plays both in every show). What I was referring to was specifically "Close to the Edge". I think the bit of "Starship Trooper" at the end of the movie is the only other performance that's the same as 'Yessongs'.

I also like the YESSONGS version of Close To The Edge better than the studio recording. This is certainly due to the atmosphere and the more dynamic that a life recording brings with it. If you know the songs better, you will also notice that YES has done a lot of fine-tuning on the arrangement for the live presentation. (with Close To The Edge especially with the last part after the "sphere sounds"). This is true for almost the entire album.

The variable sound quality is one reason I don’t revisit this album much. CTTE is of course a classic ❤ Gates of Deliriium too - and that’s ahead 😊 With CTTE here, as generally at the time, the final vocal part has a change of key that’s not on the studio version. Jon simply couldn’t hit the notes after the whole song, so it was to save his voice.

I think in Welches' book he mentioned how Offord had a mobile recording unit in anvil cases. I don't know if he was involved in this project. Could part of the sound disparities from Trac to trac be due to the different acoustics of each venue?

Alan White is all in all a more complete and well-rounded drummer than Bill Bruford. White was making a living as a session drummer before joining Yes. He played all kinds of stuff at a professional level. We love Bruford for other reasons. He is always personal, never generic (perhaps because he can't, who knows) and always with an overall vision of the music he's involved with at the time. He is a hell of a composer, too, he's written a bunch of great fusion pieces with truly sophisticated harmonies and he was always on the outlook searching for new things to do. When he no longer could, he quit. He was still physically able but his mind and heart weren't up to it, according to Bruford's own words. So he quit and now he is a very lucid curator of his legacy, and supervises boxes, remasterings and stuff

Moderately good Yes song for me - could do without the long organ solo in the middle. Nevertheless, the guitar at the beginning, the organ solo starting the end part, and finally "on the hill part" and "now that your home" crescendo are amazing. I like Gates and Awaken better. Steve played an absolutely beautiful Gibson ES-345 walnut on this song.

I have to say after hearing this for I think the first time, the drums are at minimum a bit too busy here, IMO, regardless of how much I might love it outside of that. Tone down the aggressiveness there, ya really don't need it. Alan White is not better than Bill Bruford. Alan White knows hard rock, Bill puts a bit more subtlety and jazz into it. Choose who you want. Yes it's an epic performance.

TALES is ANOTHER conceptual deep dive into a "taxing" WORLD of understanding and comprehension! and why I LOVE every second of IT. They were now on the fast track to imagining the unthinkable without ANY concerns for the limitations of mainstream music expectations. If you decide to take the leap, try to ignore the controversy of that often divisive undertaking to maintain an open mind. Just read about the concept and ideas behind it that inspired it.
