HEY GIRL HEY!
Yikes - isn't it about time we talk about exposing the natural hair community. Every one says they are leaving but I have yet seen someone walk through the door so I post the real question. How can we make the natural hair community great again?

Unpopular opinion: in 2022, we cannot complain that there aren't KZfaq channels that cater to 4b and 4c hair. They exist; they are easy to find. The folks with 4b and 4c hair are just not watching those channels. They prefer to watch the channels that feature people with looser textures because many still think a product or a technique will cause their hair texture to change. Also, with many content creators, the views are not there because the uploads are so inconsistent. There is nothing wrong with branching out, but the new content has to be something the audience wants to see from that particular creator. If when the creator comes on camera, her clothes are not fashionable or her makeup is not particularly good, I would not want to watch fashion or makeup content from that particular creator.

That part.I watched videos and found the 3-4 ladies who have hair that looks like mine so I had a great reference point for styles for my length and texturer. Then would watch other natural content creators( I help all sistas get that YT bag) that had more wavy/ looser curl pattern. The amount of comments saying "I wish my hair was like that. Your hair is so pretty and mines isn't." Like dang, if you want curls and waves like that, perms and texturizers can get you there, but applying half a jar of gel isn't it. My mother and I have different hair textures. Her hair is a looser elongated curl pattern that doesn't experience too much shrinkage while mine is kinky-coily and gets some shrinkage.

Hi Jenn..I enjoyed the discourse. We often complain about the natural hair movement but it has its merits. Without it, some of us would never have embraced our natural hair. I agree 100% with your point about us simply bringing our prejudices into the movement and that's the reason why it has its own share of issues. But speaking for myself, when I went natural 6 years ago, each time I searched hair videos on youtube, it's type 3 hair I would mostly see and I remember stressing so hard trying to get my hair to be like that and buying products left and right. It took a while for me to learn my hair and the importance of following youtubers like you who have similar texture to mine. As for the click bait vidoe titles, dont even get me started🤣🤣. But I hear you, grace needs to be given because people gotta eat out here🤣. Anyway, thanks for all the work you do. I enjoy every single one of your videos😘😘😘keep up the good work, girl. Trust me,you are making a difference.

When I started growing my hair out, i found mostly videos featuring loose curls. I sincerely thought there was something wrong with me or my hair for not behaving similarly to what I was seeing. Thankfully I found some tight curl channels later.

I've seen so many videos on natural hair community. It's failing, people aren't watching, etc. I don't thinks it's failing I think the movement did its job. It's not that anyone isn't interested in the video but they have the confidence to wear their hair. They have the confidence to be unapologetically themselves. It's let everyone know you have a choice in how you move in your life with you hair. A movement is that a movement. And every movement comes to an end to open up the doors for another issue to be tackled. I do agree the NH movement had more of a focus on looser textures. Jen keep doing what you are doing I love seeing you wear you hair. Let's me know my texture is beautiful. I also love how personable you are and that is one thing that differentiates you from other youtubers. I look forward to your posts and keep doing KZfaq full time for the next set of young natural hair people who need guidance. Also love that you took a chance on you. Looking forward to how your channel keeps growing

I discovered the NH youtube channels during the pandemic, and I learnt a lot 🙏🏽 The info still benefits me, and I watch the NH channels I do now because I enjoy personalities, I want to give my support, info on styling AND the hair videos are a great companion on my wash days. Representation will always matter 🌟💯

As someone who has KZfaq on as background noise all day while I WFH, I watch all types of personal care videos like NH, fragrance, candles, hygiene, and fashion hauls. I also watch travel, sports and finance videos. Since I now understand my natural hair, I tend to not watch as many NH videos. All of you NH creators took it for the team by advancing our understanding and acceptance of our NH. Your contributions cannot be overstated as there will not be another generation of black women with health issues associated with relaxers. We all now know BETTER thanks to your efforts. We also have so many products in our stash that we're not really interested in new products. (Use your stash is a good NH series that might still have legs because a lot of us are still working through products we purchased last year.). Sincerest THANK YOU!!!

I appreciate your honesty and transparency. As a 4C girl, I totally agree with the lack of representation and the “face” of the natural hair movement really favoring looser textures. Glad you cried and unpacked your feelings because you were able to process and get those emotions out. You’ll get clarity , and I pray that you do get a revelation of how you can earn income utilizing all of your passions. I’d understand if you stopped natural hair content, but im glad that you do it for all of us who are in the same boat as you, both the older generation and the younger one.❤

I went natural waaay before KZfaq started but my hair is so much better since I found the NH videos. You've provided a great service for people with our texture but your personality keeps us watching. It's got to be so hard to stand out with so much competition with whatever topic you choose. 🤞🏽 that more people tune in because your work deserves to be seen. Produce what you love because that makes the content more genuine.

I don’t understand what made it so negative for people. I think it did it’s job and we all have learned. I’ve been around since 2006 on the KZfaq natural hair movement, I’ve seen KZfaq evolve and the community too. I love seeing more and more tighter curled typed 4 women like myself embrace it. I agree many of us needed it, anytime money comes around things change. I hope many still learn to see their hair as beautiful and stay positive about it. Love your videos by the way. ❤

From my experience as a viewer, I started following really late, like within the last five years and got tired pretty quickly because of the consumerism. I was on the path to becoming a product junkie and finally had to arrest myself because I was starting to feel mindless, just sucked in. Also how many times do I need to see somone wash their hair??? The last point is my skepticism was on high alert because the inforrmation actually led alot of people astray. I didn't necessarily know the answers to my questions, but I knew that many of the natural hair KZfaqrs didn't know the answers either. I will watch now because I do want to show support but yet I find myself having to unfollow because I just don't need the misinformation floating around in my psyche. As for the colorism and texturism, I personally follow a diverse set of hair channels, even non-black. For me it's one of those things that I don't internalize. I understand it but I don't feel it as acutely as some describe. I think the market is very saturated and it's very hard to differientate. I'm not so sure there is a ceiling on natural hair content, I think it's time to approach from a different angle. To continue in the same vein doesn't work, so gotta find a new one.

I will watch anything you post no matter the subject, because I have grown to like you and your personality So you can keep going and go in the direction that works for you. I will continue to support and I am sure others will too. Now for what next, I think a series of videos about quick and easy hairstyles that you can do before going to work should get a lot of support. Because a lot of us know how to take care of our hair now but don't really know how to style it for their everyday work life.

I now love my hair. I've been watching you as well as chizi duru and Nappy fu and Kendra kenkay as well as I think her name was naturalme4c. And Hazel Goddess who still does natural hair videos. Been following your channel for a little while and your content is good. Do whatever you want on KZfaq, hair content, vlogs... Yes the views and opportunities are not the same. I have type 4 hair and I've done a few hair videos in the past. I am doing it to help women to wear and embrace their hair type. I don't expect to get brand deals or anything. It's pure fun and joy. Me sitting combing my hair. I do love a hair product but hair products will not make your hair grow if you are not taking care of it. The natural hair community has changed and so have we. I am going back to the old YT natural hair community and content.

Jenn I like your videos. You’re one of the first KZfaqrs that I saw who had the same hair as mine and looked like mine so I started following you. I especially liked the way you took care of your hair. It’s a lot of work. I’ve been natural for about 3 years now and mostly keep it braided. But when I go in between braids and natural it’s kinda refreshing to wash my hair and feel free. But I will return to the braids because it’s low maintenance for me going to work everyday. I’ll keep watching whatever you end up doing.

Most people are (or should be) multidimensional. I’m an Accredited Financial Counselor who likes politics, news, gardening, personal finance, investing, woodworking, fitness and cooking, so that’s what I watch on KZfaq. Why don’t you do some psychographics of your audience to find out exactly what they like and start running ads to a lookalike audience? I just started on my hair journey but have consumed so many hair videos that I’ll likely slow down now and drift back to the others. Hair is only 10 minutes a weekday and 3 hours a Sunday for most people. There’s so much more to life. Tip: Shop for and show how to do scarf tying and styling? I see you took up fitness recently, show some workout videos. And STOP! You don’t need to contemplate what life would be like if you weren’t YOU. Pivot. You’ll be fine. Wishing you the best!

I love seeing you branch out into other sub niches like mental health, nutrition, emotional intelligence, self care. There are alot of great talking points in those topics that you could always relate to hair if you wanted to. Probably alot of great brand deal opportunities for supplements and mental health services, selfcare products etc. 🤷🏾‍♀️ It's totally understandable if you are evolving and finding fulfillment in other areas.

Great video topic Jenn. These discussions are still important. I like how you specify each component of the community instead of generalizing. The most important thing I took away from the movement is actively taking responsibility for my own natural hair and focusing more on healthy strands and less on styling. Sadly there are still so many of us who think we can only look good when we pay someone else to deal with our hair. And yes those “never stop growing” titles drive me crazy but those DIYs with natural herbs do have the power to turn your hair around

I agree with you, natural hair definitely saved me in a time when I was lost. I think you should build a business selling products you care about, hair care education, organization, self care, etc. Documenting your business from idea to launch would be very interesting. You have access to over 150,000 subscribers. There’s many ways you can incorporate natural hair into other endeavors. I’ll support you no matter what. You have helped me love my 4c hair and it’s elevated my self image.

I watch mainly watch traveling vlogs and cooking shows on KZfaq. During the begining of the pandemic I got into natural hair care when all the salons closed, but quickly lost interest due to all the misinformation. Fast forward today, I have unsubscribed to 90% of the natural hair content creators that I use to follow in 2020, but kept the ones (such as yourself) because you all branched out to other topics that are of interest to me. I love when you talk about self care and Journaling and other mental health topics. I even like these chit chats!!!! I still watch the hair stuff the 10% put out for support, but do admit, I do skip over that content now and again...BUT always watch the new branch out stuff.

It’s refreshing to hear what many of us are thinking. You should dabble into new areas and topics while still staying true to natural hair. I personally love the kinky hair discourse but I love journaling, self development art and fitness. I think your new audience you attract will see you are multi faceted and from there you’ll grow a audience base that’s conditioned and ready to see that you do more than 1 thing. You feel real not just a one stop shop creator and that isn’t bad. I feel like I’m coming to chat and listen to you when I’m on your channel. You don’t put yourself in a box and you’re free flowing. I’d say grow and see what happens because what’s meant for you won’t pass you by. I love your drive and passion that’s what keeps me rooted here. You're right, we carry our issues into everything we do as a community and it shows how much healing we need. Only focusing on the positive is starting to require an ancient monk level of discipline. I can't imagine how rough it is when you are in it day in and day out, having to make content. That's why I wonder if some content creators limit themselves bc what business in the world only sells one product day after day after day? What singer only sings one song, album after album after album? What job has you doing only one assignment hour after hour after hour. What chef only cooks one dish? What delivery service only visits one house? What movie theater only plays one movie...you get the point. If we're multi-faceted humans, maybe we aren't programmed to be complacent or content with doing one thing for all of our life. Maybe we shouldn't try to fit a firecracker into a tube of toothpaste. Let that thang blow, branch out, and light up different areas of the sky.

I love the fact that you are so transparent and I love the character you put forward and I always feel like you are the best friend that I never had that I aspire to be be around. I never truly understood the goal you had regarding your hair so I figure you just want to have fun before you decide anything serious for your hair? I could be wrong. But I'm always curious to to see what is going on with and you make me think about so many things with the style on your thoughts, Questions, and the process that you go through and share that process past or future process because I love how you live life!!!

What you say is true about looser textures, i didnt even know about you till another youtuber mentioned you but you are like a needle in a haystack together with @adanna who show texture similar to mine and rarely wear protective styles. The content does get repetitive but if it helps i treat it like revision so it sticks in my head

I love my natural hair content creators. I’ve been natural for more than 10 years and every now and then I get into a natural hair funk. You guys keep me going and I continue to learn more about my hair and techniques as time goes on. I for one will keep watching and liking your videos as long as you guys keep posting natural hair content. I wish I could multiply people like me 20,000 times to give you all the support you need to keep doing what you do.

That's interesting because I never click on sensationalized videos like grow your hair down your back in 2 weeks.... Like to me that's pretty insulting because anyone with a brain knows that it's not possible. I follow those old school G's that have been around these KZfaq streets and no what they're talking about. Honestly for me it has nothing to do with what kind of texture their hair is or is it, I look for quality and the passion that the creator has for the content that they create. It's sad to say but I definitely don't watch videos with women who have very loose textures because I feel like I have nothing in common with them and that's not necessarily always true. However I do see many black brands supporting the KZfaqrs that I follow and they pay very well for instance Adowa, Curl mix, Tre Luxe etc.. and it's a beautiful thing! Also by the way I never watch vlogs, lol

The way you feel about natural hair is the way I feel about education…specifically, higher ed/university course/obtaining a degrees…or degrees. I cried about this yesterday. It’s an uphill battle. We have to continue to do the work we are charged to do in this lifetime and let God take care of the rest. I’m 4z. I watch you bc I really like your personality and also, although I mostly wear two strand twists all day every day all the time, I know my hair can do A L O T bc I’ve seen all your styles. I recently made ten years being natural, I’ve never straightened my hair on once I find someone who isn’t afraid to do my hair (been looking FOREVER) I can be fancy and wear styles other than these twists. Keep doing what your heart tells you. You ARE appreciated💛🙏🏾💛

your concerns are valid. Just like the makeup gurus, natural hair creators will have to branch out, either offer a different product or service outside youtube involving natural hair or switch to different type of content. The natural hair community has so many creators now that I think it's now harder to attract viewers as most aren't loyal to anyone when it comes to searching for specific info.

Hey!! I have been following and watching you for so long!! Truly! I really think you should find a passion that speak to you, in the creative space, you just need to transition! And do something else that may be different and powering. You no longueur have the passion for it. And don’t stress too much about finance, it will come once you find something you care about. People can see through the scream when you love something. (Personally I watch more romance advice videos, I no longueur watch natural hair videos a lot bc I already know the just of how to take care of my hair) your hair is beautiful! And yours! Yes the natural community has changed (with the brands, lack of representation). I’m still grateful it’s hear. I don’t know if I would of transition to my natural hair. When I first stated watching KZfaq we would see relaxed girl growing their hair and the suddenly I started to see wowen transitioning. I decided to plunge in 2014 (I knew what hair looked liked because I had my first relaxer when I was 21). I still the community has it’s place and there still work to do. Thanks for sharing your perspective

I went natural in 2019. Before that I was relaxed since I could remember and everyone one I knew had relaxed hair. I went natural after my cancer diagnosis and wanted nothing to do with chemicals that would harm me. The way I learned how to care for my hair was KZfaq university. I am so grateful for KZfaq because I learned how to care for my hair and love my hair.

I just want to appreciate you creating content for 4c natural hair community. It really does help a lot of us out here who may not have so much awareness about handling our hair. Personally i just began my natural hair journey a few weeks ago and your videos have been so useful to someone like me just starting out. I thought i'd suggest the videos i spend a lot of time watching on KZfaq and maybe that might help give ideas GRWM for people with natural 4c hair- hair and makeup Product reviews for natural 4c hair Styling videos for 4c hair- with different creative looks especially nigh-out kind of looks Probably you've created such videos but sometimes i don't see harm in repetitive videos sometimes there's something new to learn, I've experienced this from watching several makeup tutorials, there's always something of value i gain- it can also apply with styling videos Thanks again for being a voice for the 4c natural hair community

It's difficult for me to see the issues that are happening in the NH community and not feel sad. Personally, I came to the NH community a little differently because I already knew how to take care of my hair. When I searched "long afro hair" I wasn't looking for how to take care of it but rather a group that was wearing their hair long. Of course, back then I ended up finding the LHCF, and the LHC. Being a YTube viewer for so long I branched out into other interests, but I still enjoy watching hair videos. I don't see texturism going anywhere it seems like it has been a constant whether one has personally experienced it or not it's almost impossible to not be aware of it. The thing is there is no need for it because hair is hair regardless of its texture and just needs to be cleansed, conditioned, and styled with the proper styler for the style that is being worn. I don't know what creators need to do if anything in order to get more views. I tend to thing people just watch what they want to watch based on their personal preferences.

1. I have found my products that work. 2. I realized that I am just not good at styling my hair on my own. I stick to my 2 styles that I know. 3. I've consumed enough natural hair content and have moved on to tv show reviews, comedy and satirical shows 4. That's how the internet works. You're interested until you're not and you just move on. 5. The best thing about the community for me was helping me to see how products work. 6. The worst thing about the community was recommending products that didn't work. 7. I don't watch makeup or skincare videos any more either because of the points above.

Heavy on number 7!! I struggle with acne and the amount of videos I've consumed to help me figure it out just weren't helping lol. The same for the hair, I found it annoying overtime that the products working for my hair were said to not work, and now I realize that everyone's hair is different. The community should stop focusing on products and instead be focusing on how to care for your hair~ which is becoming more apparent now days, but whew 2018 natural hair KZfaq was something else lol

Thanks Jenn! I think that right now many people are into the wigs, slicked baby hairs, defined curls, ginger dyed hair, and fantasy colored braids. Lots of videos of young ladies going back to relaxers after growing out a headful of natural hair. It makes me sad to see all that body and fullness disappear into limpness- but to each her own. I would like to see soft textured styles come back. There is a channel on KZfaq called Rosy Natural and she has some very nice styles that I think can be beautiful with today's fashion. Check her out. And thanks for your content Jenn. I so appreciate you!

Thank you for the video Jenn. I started following you because we have similar hair type. Frankly speaking, I went natural because of the natural hair community on KZfaq. And yes, I quickly realized that the people that inspired me to go natural didn’t have my hair type 😅but that didn’t stop me. I have big chopped three times since I first went natural in 2016 but the most important thing I learnt is that knowing my hair porosity is extremely important. And I am still learning. What am I saying, this natural hair living is a beautiful lifestyle, its us embracing our beautiful, versatile crown of glory ( in every texture and every length) it’s a legacy that we owe our children, the next generation, it’s not a coincidence that it has gained so much momentum in our generation and like every lifestyle change, every journey, every success story, there will be challenges, ups and down. I will say hang in there Jenn, I feel a shift is coming, the hard work will pay off in ways you didn’t even imagine. (Who knew that there will come a time when big brands will be falling over themselves to make products specifically for our hair. I know it’s still a long way to go but it shows how far we have come in such a short period) We are your crowd, cheering you on ❤❤

Hello love your video !!! I think that yes I watched so much natural hair videos that now I feel like I have the knowledge that I need … I no longer binge watch those type of videos … but will watch the videos if it comes from a KZfaqr that I really like … so whenever you make a haut video I will watch it because I’m curious to see what’s going on with your hair … I have so many products in my bathroom …. I am trying not to buy more … but I would like to get more information on how long can I keep using my products .. once it is open can I use it for a year ? 6 months ? It’s is still efficient if I use it will it damage my hair ? I have 5 types of leave in and sometimes it will take a year before I empty it… is there a problem with me doing this ? Should I get one product an a time and finish it before I buy a new one ? I have been a faithful subscriber and I live your channel !!!

I've been natural since 2001, I've cut my hair a couple of times and mostly done braids. I discovered NH Community in 2018 and thats when NH products kind of entered our local market. I started watching your videos last year and a few African natural hair influencers coz Im African. My hair started to improve then, I learnt that my hair is 4B, I always thought all black hair was 4C. Even though Im 4B, your videos have taught me a lot about protective styling and wash day. You're so versatile with your hair, Id love to learn how to style my hair and enjoy it more. I've always loved being natural even though my hair is only up to my neck. Maybe do more styling tutorials, love your content and you This year I fell into the trap of 'your hair will never stop growing' videos, tried very few of the diys though, now I'm over it (and gladly so). Simplicity is best, I'm however experimenting with diy ayuverda oils (amla, moringa, fenugreek) and tea rinses, nothing hectic or time consuming

I got on here 08 09 an I was looking for something anything to help me reinvent myself and I stumbled on hair videos. I've always had long thick hair but I dint have a clue how to do it. I learned early how to wash and condition with concoctions passed down. But, I didn't inherit the native American texture like my siblings did. I was the blk swan in all aspects. I was dark thick and had kinkier hair. I've learned a lot and im still learning. From haircare to products tool different lifestyles how beautiful we are as a ppl and women. I love this community bcus I watch every hair to decor to gardening decorating cooking different dishes jobs exercise activities mindset positivity skincare how to dress and hairstyles cuts colors for older women and how to deal with grey hair bcthat hag is disrespectful. 😆. We can talk about anything sis bcus life changes and so do we so we gotta move with it or get left eh ?.we can talk about jobs relationship bills kids pets just life. Don't give up! You are good at this and remember not everything has to be about money or how many came out bcus all it takes is one to spread the word and bam💥 you blow up. Quality over quantity is always where the wealth is. Love you sis.

Natural hair transcends the KZfaq community. The only problem I have with it is the few content creator who acts like godmothers of KZfaq land and recruits other KZfaqrs with the help of their fans to hate and cancel brands and others without thinking! You can see them in other people's comments sections lowkey being narcissistic and misleading with their miss goody two shoe attitude.

Yep, we still need to fix some internal stuff. I think the majority of US blacks are type 4. So how is it that we are running to see type 3 videos? Results will not be similar. Are we 👀 these videos as "hair porn"? . Wishing they were us? Living through them? No wonder wonder we have issues loving our hair. Early in my journey, I decided to not view subscribe or watch any type 3 videos until I had mastered my own hair (2-3 years yes that long). Now when do watch those, I can enjoy the video for what it is. And not a "wishin n hopin" session. (Back to MBL yippee)

I think the issue is not enough black women with 4c hair are leaving their natural hair out let alone filming videos and uploading unto KZfaq. It’s apparent that the black women who use their hair more have looser curl pattern as that is what is deemed as “pretty” the natural hair community is anti - black

One of the positive parts of the natural hair movement is that it brought back oral tradition. Passing on of hair knowledge, use of raw natural ingredients to make homemade oils, creams, conditioners. Promotion of a holistic approach to hair care. Healthy eating, lifestyle.
