In this episode, we are discussing the idea of Yi Quan handling pressure. Yi Quan is very specific in the training to have a very strong structure. With the right training, a strong structure can be achieved without any specific stance or technique. Let's discuss it!

I'm so glad your covering yi chuan and so much more along with the Wing Chun system. Just brings back memories of the 10 year run I did in Chinatown and privates with my schools top students, back in my late 20s early 30s.. I am going to join your online school, get back in my attic which I made into a kwoon years ago, still have my Mook Jong and all equipment. I also want my kids to learn, I want to pass it down. just wanted to lose some weight first! lol My Sifu used to say "Just jump back in, start slow, change and re build your mind body and soul..." Its such a great art.

Man, you are an encyclopedia standing on two feet! I am familiar with the idea about closing the centreline but not opening it like in yiquan. That was a brilliant explanation.

Very late in the 1900’s, grand students of WXZ traveled around China engaging in challenge matches. The only reported difficulties were with the He lineage Zhaobao Taijiquan masters of Xi’an. This is one of the Xi’an Lineages “Zheng Wuqing (1895-1984), one of the famous two Zheng's that are descendant from He Style Taijijquan (disciple of He Qinxi) . Zheng Wuqing taught a smaller frame (higher stance and smaller body frame) consisting of 75 Postures. Zheng Wuqing is said to have taught … mostly … the Cheng jia (Heritage Frame). The Chengjia frame is an even more formless small frame approach emphasizing light, agile, harmonized and gentle movements. The circles are reduced and small but in continued mutual lines as per the percepts of Zhaobao Taijiquan. Zheng Wuqing moved to Xi'an in 1938 and had taught in the local branch of the Huangpu academy. He became known as one of the 'two heroes' of Taijiquan in the Northwest. Some of the known recent generation masters of this style include Shi Maoyuan, .. and Liu Rui”. A google search for Liu Rui and Taijiquan will turn up video of his form and push hands application.

this style intrigues me ..I like the fact that you move your opponent when he punches at you.. That reminds me of pentjak silat..I watch a lot of videos and not alot of practitioners break the structure when they are training.. You have good stuff!

Wanted to thank you. Will make it more manifest in future. I’ve aspired to do real standing practice, and it has always competed with meditation, internal MA work, praying, other self improvement. I would do 20 minutes Zhan Zhuang, or leave my arms at my side and do a bit longer, or do a bit of San ti. Other things as well You cleared things up for me. You said standing is preliminary work for sitting, which I’ve certainly done much more of, but without life changing breakthrough. You described the effect it has on application of power freely, with minimal structure. Though I can’t claim to be a martial artist, it is at least very important to me as an essential vital life skill. You’ve made the Taoist attitude clearer- the practical for living and for life intention of the practices. And you’ve said or suggested other values and ideas that filled gaps in my understanding, cannot explain but Hakka did something. You tipped me over finally. Just did my third day of zhan zhuang for a thousand count. The old masters didn’t have timers, I think. Has averaged 40 minutes. I’ll raise the count until I have an hour. I’m really grateful. This is already more focused and dedicated than ever before, and my plan is to make it permanent, until I’ve gotten all I can out of it. 30 years maybe? Maybe it is a permanent thing. You were the final catalyst. Thank you. Oh. And haven’t watched this vid yet. Maybe I’ll be editing this in a few minutes. Yes. In fact, a tremendous video. And the comments following… (Not referring to mine) Also, it has gotten so that I really am impressed by Chris and his contribution.

Re. matches where Wang Xiangzhai lost or was evenly matched, Wang stated that 2.5 people understood martial arts. Xie Tiefu (Xinyi) was one, Wu Yi Hui (Liu He Ba Fa founder and one time president of the Nanjing Guoshuguan) was another, and he listed as a half a white crane master he had exchanged evenly with (which implies Wang considered himself as having a half understanding). If he was beaten by two people, that would suggest they were Xie Tiefu and Wu Yi Hui. Some details of this history are difficult to confirm. The white crane masters name seems to be a mix of two practitioners from the Zonghequan lineage. It doesn’t seem that Xie Tiefu has been identified. It’s possible the name was distorted in transmission or that it was encoded so only lineage holders from that master would know (one theory is Xie means thanks, Fu means master, and Xie Tiefu is actually “Thank you master Tie”).

Some of the Yiquan masters train sanda teams. My friend got a letter of introduction to visit and train with one of them. He said the coldness (speed and non telegraphic character) of the coaches strikes was unreal. He said he registered the sound and the feel of the impact before he visually registered the coach throwing a strike. After that the coach told him that the combat post was the most important training for combat and that it trained all the attributes needed. During sparring, the coach would enter on one line while presenting a threat, then use the mocabu coordination to shift to another line to get an unopposed strike.

In a previous video on Yi Quan, Adam mentions “opening the pores”. Any chance of elaborating on this concept? Is it related to “pore breathing” in Neidan? Thanks for the awesome videos, and your eternal suffering is appreciated, Chris!
@Simon2k17
@Simon2k17 Жыл бұрын
It's similar. In my opinion pore breathing in martial arts context is crucial to synchronize the arms with the whole body. Many can sink the bottom half of the spine, few can sink the top half of the spine. Connecting the arms require Chi Gong practice in my opinion. I stretch and breathe out from the arms and try to full body breathe eventually. This is the carrying the ball he talks about. In Tai Chi is called Peng. However, once you get really good, you don't need to hold any shapes and people start bouncing or flopping around. That's the stuff that looks questionable and super fake.

The bringing of the feet together in the manner of Yiquan mocabu creates the coordination needed for ambiguous entry angle changes. With that coordination you can force the opponent to guess at your entering line, with a wrong guess resulting in their structure, intention and momentum being stuck on the wrong line during your entry. If you have mastered how to draw during an entry, you can use the stepping to empty them out. If it’s done correctly it will look like the opponent gets frozen in place for a split second during your entry. With Yiquan’s speed this is sufficient to land a strike completely unopposed.

One of the best yi quan practitioners I ever saw struggled with an opponent that did center line chain kicks. He went straight back instead of going off on a diagonal to get out of the other guy's center line attack. However, this was a friendly match. A real fight, I do not think his opponent would have been allowed to get into that position.

Find a good teacher and get good at one style first. I’ve been doing the internal arts for over a decade. I started with hsing i and then Chen tai chi and finally bagua. I recommend doing them in this order. I’ve done many arts over the years, but I believe you want to get a good base in one of them. Then you can add more after you have a good foundation.

@@justinsnow3979 I hope you don't mind me asking, but how long did you train in each style before moving to the next? I trained Chen Tai chi for 1 year, but it was only taught for health, though I have an interest in learning as a Martial Art. I am currently training in Xing yi for the past 5 months, which I really enjoy. Eventually I would like to learn Bagua too. I am willing to take my time though learning each style.
