Last year when my YiaYia, Lela Samios (my Greek grandmother) died, since I couldn't attend her funeral or wake in Australia, I made a video of her famous roast potato recipe which has an Asian twist - it's famous in the family and I created the video so our family could remember her - but one year on I thought I might share it with the world. It's best played with one of our traditional christmas songs, Harry Belafonte - "Banana Boat Song (Day O)", but obviously I couldn't use that on youtube because of copyright.
In short, this Greek lemon roast potato recipe requires the following ingredients:
-Baking Potatoes (many many many potatoes)
-Lemons (fresh lemon juice is better than the pre-squeezed stuff)
-Garlic (quite a bit)
-Oregano (dried)
-Soy Sauce (medium or dark)
-Olive Oil (extra virgin is better)
Then follow these instructions - make sure you complete every step :-)
0. Preheat the over to 180 Celsius (350 f)
1. Peel the potatoes
2. Squeeze the lemons
3. Finely chop the garlic
4. Add the garlic to the lemon juice
5. Add equal parts soy sauce to the lemon juice an garlic
6. Add a nice large tablespoon of Oregano to the marinade
7. Oil the pan with extra virgin olive oil
8. Roll the potatoes around in the oil
9. pour 2/3rds of the marinate over the potatoes
10. Whack it in the over
11. Every 15 minutes take the potatoes out and flip them, do this 3-4 times and add the remaining marinate on the first or second flip.
12. Enjoy!

As a Filipino, I love this recipe. We put potatoes in a lot of soy sauce based dishes, but having it crisp like this? Heavenly. Also, we too enjoy some citrus on our food. So don’t fear! It’s not weird at all.

My Mother came to the US when she was fourteen years old. She And my Father, both full blooded Greek! So my children grew on her Greek cooking. Yia yia and Papoo! Our Yia Yis passed away 1/16/13. So this will be the first year with the holidays coming up as she always did the cooking! ! am trying to recreate her recipes as well. Thank you for posting this. God Bless

I think it's wonderful that you're passing on this recipe. I can't wait to try it. I have some fond memories of the dishes my gran used to make, but unfortunately she never wrote down the specifics. All her recipes looked like shopping lists -- no amounts!

haha - I did say you need LOADS of potatoes... this is exactly what always happens, so in a funny way you've carried on my yiayia's legacy (ie. never having enough potatoes) haha, brilliant! Your comment made my day!

These look delicious. My girlfriend and I will try to make them soon. Do you have any idea if this would still be good with sweet potatoes?

Soy Sauce? Who would even consider adding that to Greek potatoes. I'll give it a try.

I think sweet potatoes might be a little odd, and its also totally unnecessary since its so loaded with flavour already :-)
