I feel like it's hard not to draw comparisons between this and Detective Pikachu. Both adhere a gritty, realistic aesthetic set in a modern day "real world," but what I think separates the two is the appreciation of the source material. Despite myself initially being really against the premise of a Detective Pikachu movie, the trailers slowly won me over, and showed me that there's an understanding of the Pokemon world there, and that they're gonna try to have fun with an otherwise absurd concept. This, however... Seems like a really cynical studio move to make money by referencing Sonic iconography, but missing the core of what people love about the games. It abides that very generic "stock military involvement vs unusual main character" formula, and likely the only saving grace will be Jim Carrey's charisma. Though I do agree with your assessment - it's _not_ Jim Carrey playing Eggman, it's Jim Carrey playing Jim Carrey while wearing a vaguely Robotnik costume.

Seeing what Sega has done to my childhood hero over the years... man. Sakurai put more love into Sonic in Smash bros than Sega has in over a decade of their collective games. Why is he an electric type Pokémon now? Why do his hands freak me out so much? Why didn’t they make Eggman fat and bald when he would look way more hilarious that way? Where tf are Tails and Knuckles? (Honestly I hope they aren’t in the movie, if Sonic looks this awful they would probably look terrifying LOL.)
