It strikes me interestingly that the Deux-Ponte Regiment was German-speaking, from the French-German border. Their objective, Redoubt 9, was defended by a German unit. One of the units assaulting Redoubt 10 was the Rhode Island Regiment, having a large number of black soldiers serving in it's ranks.
