The O'Kellys

3 жыл бұрын

Cruising full time on a sailboat teaches a lot about nature, people, and ourselves. But one lesson we’ve learned over the years is more important than any other: you gotta go with the flow....in this case, go where the wind blows. This week we also continue our series on things to think and learn about before you buy the boat, and it’s all about the tools we have on board, from wrenches to glues to tape, fabric, thread, sewing machines and other power tools. We go deep! Also, we talk about what makes the Bahamas so unique geographically and geologically.

One thing I started about 5 years ago... I picked one brand of cordless tools that has good quality and variety of tools. Now I have one duplex battery charger, and interchangeable 18V batteries. I went Makita, but Bosch, Dewalt or Milwaukee are fine too. Saves tons of space and confusion with batteries and chargers.

Awesome video you guys! It was very nice to see that we aren't the only ones who brought the entire tool bench out of the garage with us onto the boat! Megan, I have a SUP cover on my sewing to-do list too. Thanks for the push to bring it to the top! Idea for a future video (unless you've already done it and I missed out): What you go through every week to come up with content/shoot footage/edit/edit/edit/upload and call it a wrap. I think it would be interesting to "see" how you put it all together. Thanks for the weekly entertainment!

Another wonderful episode, so much goodness! Visuals, audio, humor, script, editing, adventure... you folks have this working like a full-crew pro-show. We got arts & crafts Megan, science & industry Nick, old goodbyes, new hellos, and a long-awaited look into the real nuts & bolts (and threads and glues) of the operation, so to speak :) I hope the season is treating you at least as well, on average, as the parts you are able to to present on video. Tools. That's something I have a lot of. Some of them from Harbor Freight. Like my grinder. It's 16 years old and still running strong. I also have a variable speed buffer/sander that has buffed and polished over 100 BMW, Mercedes Benz, Audi and Porsche vehicles when I was in the pre-owned auto world. However, my other power and hand tools are Craftsman, DeWalt and Snap-on. I have a sewing machine, but it's not good for anything other than light and medium weight fabrics. Nick, Great video, I particulary enjoyed your take on essential tools for a boat, (althought I might have added a few more). One point (as a profesional boat builder) always store your sandpaper so that no two rough sides (i.e. the working side of the sandpaper) rub together, - it will ruin the sandpaper in very short order. Storing them in an air tigt containiner (as you have done) is essential, as dampness ruins sandpaper (except wet nd dry of course).
@TheOKellys

Thank you for the comment. As with many things, I know better. My father was a professional woodworker. Boats, kitchens, trade shows, etc. He would cringe at seeing that virgin sandpaper folded like that. What you didn't see in the video was a deeper store of Festool disks (I'm betting you know Festool), for all the grits up to 800 or so I believe. All face to backing. You'd be proud. He'd be proud.

What an intro!! I haven't even seen the rest of the vid, but hey ... nicely done. Not only the aerial footage but the music - Just perfect. That first music... gosh I love it - it is possible to get it online? If you could share it, would be great.

Hey, amazing timing for this video...we just bought our first boat, a Fountaine Pajot Mahé 36...and just yesterday I spent several hours at Home Depot buying the basic tools, while wondering, what other boat-specific stuff I should get...so, thanks! We're from the West Coast, but bought the boat in Miami. We have a few weeks of boat projects, then will be cruising the Bahamas....maybe see you over there.

You know, watching your videos a bit out of order, as I am late to the party I was thinking; Man this guy should do audio books or something what a voice. That clip at the start was a major light bulb. Also what an advantage, a meteorologist sailor is!
