This. Way too many watch youtubers have a pretty bad take in jumping to conclusions about 100m resistance watches, including 5KX, and most of them have probably never gone diving in their life. 100m is fine for most divers, and is definitely fine for the pool.

100m of water resistance means basically nothing as far as certification. It’s only maybe on to go swimming in but not recommended. 200m is the standard for where it is actually water proof
@TheMonsterHunterTV
@TheMonsterHunterTV 10 ай бұрын
Scientist here. The 100m water resistance actually doesn't refer to water (i know lmao) it actually means 10atm. 10 atm are 10 times atmospheric pressure. That means it's the pressure of the atmosphere (air). 10 atm actually is the same pressure that water would inflict upon a surface at 100m depth than 10 times Our air-filled atmosphere would do to a surface the same size BUT the package-density of water molecues are FAR higher that the molecues in out atmosphere. So 100m water resistance will keep your movement dry while swimming but for actual diving you'll need at least a screw-down-crown. Just with a Screw down crown you'll take advantage of the so-called van-der-waals-forces that keep the water molecues together on a microskopic-scale. I hope i could help you.

Good point about pressure-testing, especially with an older watch. A few points, though: - There are plenty of watches that say "200m" (or so) on the dial. Relatively few of these watches are officially certified (say, ISO certification) for watertightness to a given depth, so you're essentially going on the say-so of the manufacturer. If you're dealing with the majors - Seiko, Orient, Citizen, Casio *et al* you should be okay. - ISO certification (which, BTW, covers stuff beyond just water-resistance for dive watches) has a minimum baseline of 100m as a standard. Many commercial divers rarely go beyond that depth on the day-to-day, and recreational divers rarely go past 50m. Your Jacques Cousteau-wannabes are in the extreme minority. But if you *must* have that chunky 600m diver, and have the bucks for it, I won't judge you...much. 😅
@ChronometerCheck
@ChronometerCheck 10 ай бұрын
Both good points, and thanks for correcting me on the ISO certification baseline (100m instead of 200). Regarding your first point, absolutely. You should take the stamped WR rating with a grain of salt if not from a trusted manufacturer.

Another point...the screw down crown was not designed to keep water out, nor does it,,,that's the job of the seals. The screw down crown was designed so your crown doesn't' accidentally get popped open underwater. Sinn makes a 5000m Dive watch that is NOT ISO rated, nor does it have a screw down crown. The rolex Submariner, Sea Dweller and Deepsea are not ISO rated...yet, I've never heard of them being referred to as "Dive style Watches". I agree...servicing is key, bt that is for any watch you wear in the water.

I happen to have a Seiko SRPD71K1, and an Orient "Kamasu," and the deepest water they see is in my shower/tub. I am a master desk diver and I approve of 100 meter WR. The Seiko does require quite a hard pull to get the crown out for setting the time, so I am confident in the crown gasket for now. Plus, I live in the New Orleans area, and we have incredibly high humidity and dew points most of the time, but my Seiko hasn't fogged up once so far.

If anyone talks to you about dynamic pressure experienced when you move around, know that it's negligible compared to the static pressure which is based on depth. The depth rating is also based on specific tests which may differ from watch to watch. Certain standards carry more weight than others, but you may not be able to find out which tests a watch had been subjected to. Just dive with a dive computer or go with a 200m+ watch.
@randomaccount3364
@randomaccount3364 10 ай бұрын
The first dive watch, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, has 100m water resistance and does not have a screw down crown. You obviously can't Diver's certify the first dive watch because its conception preceeds the existence of certification standards, and a screw down crown does not actually prevent water from entering the case, that's the job of the crown gasket. I wouldn't personally dive with something that isn't 200m or Diver's certified because 200m is in my mind the bare minimum modern standard that manufacturers who are serious about diving need to reach. But there's nothing wrong with only 100m resistance and no screw down case, the watch would probably survive down to 30ft at least.

99% of people who own dive watches are not divers so this is mostly irrelevant. People just like the style, and of course there’s a desire to own a capable, certified dive watch, maybe even with a fancy helium escape valve even though most don’t even know what that is for. It’s just more features. Most pilot watches aren’t worn by pilots. Most basketball sneakers never see a court.

Seiko 5 sports is good enough for recreational diving- usually up to 40 meters. And that’s deep. Besides no one still uses a traditional dive watch for any technical dives. Even recreational divers these days don’t use dive watches. Besides if you do want to use a dive watch like a Squale then it needs to be inspected every year and tested. Don’t play with your life just to test a watch.

100m is fine for far more than swimming, that’s 328 feet. That’s far deeper than recreational diving which typically doesn’t go deeper than around 130 feet. More experienced divers will go deeper but anything after 60 meters is technical diving, that’s 200 feet. So even if you see a technical diver, you still have 128 feet to go. The vast majority of people who where these watches will never come close to 100 meters, so that’s plenty resistance. Honestly, saying it’s just good for swimming is a stupid thing to say. People in the watch community get wrapped up in numbers that matter very little.

Everything about this video is wrong. Starting with 100 meters is plenty for dive watches and thats the ISO certification, second gaskets are made out of silicon and not rubber unless you’re running a very old vintage watch, lastly screw down crowns does add to the water resistance they just ensure that the crown is indeed down and it won’t get bumped.
