It's interesting to find that softening an shortening place names if you live in that place is common in other countries. I live near a place called Todmorden which is not pronounced as it's spelled, you essentially remove the 2nd and 3rd vowels and the r so it's closer to Todmdn.

I think it makes perfect sense with Växjö because if you think about it, x is basically two consonants [ks]. [k] goes to the first syllable väk- and [s] goes to the second syllable and forms -sjö so it techincally is väk-sjö

This is great to know. I only knew about one town name - Vrigstad. Years ago when my husband and I visited Sweden with oldest son who was a baby at the time (and is about your age) for a family wedding, we stopped at a church for a rest stop. That impressed me - churches or whoever providing coffee and pastries for free as a rest stop for motorists. Anyway, we got talking to the priest there about my husband's desire to do a little looking for some record of his ancestors at a library in Vrigstad, and he informed us the local pronunciation (and, like you, I say that is the correct one) was "vree-stah." Thanks for teaching us a few more! :D

To my ears, neither. The sh in shopping is more like sch in schock, choklad, skift, skälla, while k in köpa is softer, same as kjol, källa, köl, tjäle. I suppose ciao is closer if you remove the attack part of it. Various Swedish dialects pronounce these sounds differently, e.g. to me skälla uses the tip of the tongue to the roof of the mouth but källa uses a part further in on the tongue. Just slightly further north, the skälla sound is not formed with tongue at all, and that's the version I'd use in the word östergötska. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gLJxZrV8yLOznoU.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fJpnY7Whvb60Xac.html

And if you allow me, you have a place named as "Ölmevalla." This is so funny to us because "ölme" is derived from the verb "ölmek" which means "to die" and "valla" means "to swear" so they have a cemetery named after the town and in Turkish it could be translated as "i swear i don't want you to die cemetery" 😅
