"You Don't Mess Around With Jim" was originally recorded and released by Jim Croce in 1972. If you don't know, you better ask somebody. The song tells of a tough but not-too-smart pool hustler by the name of "Big Jim Walker" who gets what's comin' to him by Willie "Slim" McCoy. The song was a hit for Jim Croce and led to the follow up "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown". I personally love the original song for the story telling and harmony, but the scatting Jim does at the end of each chorus is just the cherry on top. Bah doh doo da da deet dee dee deet dee. "Time in a Bottle" was our song (my beloved hubby of 38 years and mine). We would dance to it whenever it played on the radio. He would always "dip" me at the end of it. I sang it to him as he lay dying in hospice and I think he heard me. Can't hear it to this day, 14 years later, without bursting in tears. Life is filled with tragic losses.

Yeah, I was waiting for one of the Geoffs to resolve that low note, and then he did, and then I melted into a puddle on the floor! As a music teacher, I really appreciate how Geoff and the Geoff's cover songs that I have never heard before. I do the research and go teach them to my students! The songs that Geoff chooses are a completely different style than what students are listening to now. They are more thought-provoking. I've had many students. Tell me that they really enjoy the material!

When I was a kid, it was a testament to how much I loved a song, if I skipped a couple of lunches at school so I could use the money to buy the 45! This must be the simplest scenario of all Geoff's covers. Even the ligthing doesn't change as much. All five dudes in the same outfit (black clothes over a black fond). Nevertheless, you can't stop from being scotched to the screen: the hands, the legs, the coordination of movements between two of the guys and, of course, when you're back from the low notes, the high notes arrive. In the middle, the harmonies... As if it wasn't enough, you have the scatting at the end. He's not a singer, he's a magician !!

The nicest fight song who is a fight song of a hidden fight song 😄 Btw I like the second singer (the higher one) best in this vid. What a fun Mother's Day present! Yes, I said Mother's Day. My grandmother loved this song (especially the chorus) and would sing it to us all the time. You brought up so many memories and had us giggling and telling Grandma stories - after we had watched your video a bunch of times, of course. :-) Thank you!
