In this video I will discuss an alternate solution for adding a power supply for your accessories without adding a dual battery system. Just because you go overlanding, does not mean you need to spend the money on a dual battery setup to power your fridge and other accessories. I will walk you through the solution I decided on using in my 5th Gen Toyota 4runner to give me the power I need when off the grid, without leaving myself stranded with a dead battery. I will be using my Odyssey Performance AMG battery, Trigger Control switch panel and Blue Sea accessory panels to power my fridge, Ecoflow Battery and other accessories. Hope this video helps you decide on the right setup for you.

Personally, the start battery is my lifeline, if I have a failure in my camp setup, I'm still mobile, that's why ALL of my "camping" related power needs are powered off a separate system, completely isolated from the vehicle, charged by solar. I also run a small 100 AH Lion reserve battery to operate the compressor as the Bluetti cannot supply enough amps. This aux battery charger is simply plugged into the Bluetti as it is capable of a pass through solar charging. To each his own, but out in the middle of nowhere, I want my vehicle batt to have 100% charge at all times, especially if your alternator goes out, you'll need that capacity to keep running.

You can run a battery charge controller to your battery. Then a solar panel to the charge controller and monitor your battery via Bluetooth. The whole time your using power it’s replenishing. I do run a bigger than oem odyssey AGM battery as well. Also as back up always have a battery jump pack with you. I only use power for my fridge and some lights or to charge a phone. If you power minimal stuff I don’t see it necessary to have duel batteries for the cost. If you got a dirtbox with coffee machines and all kinda of power draw accessories then maybe worth the investment of duel battery.

I do have an ecoflow too but am going to do the setup I just mentioned because I realize those power stations aren’t reliable overtime. I noticed the battery life diminishing and it’s not worth the money IMO.

I have a portable NOCO jump pack just in case. I run my fridge and charge camera gear and a phone. That’s really it. Having the low voltage cutoff is key and it’s also something a dual battery setup has as well, disconnecting the starter battery below a certain point. Thanks for the comments everyone. This is a great community.

I have had excellent luck out of the two Odyssey power sports batteries I own-both installed in 2011. One in a street bike and another in a side by side. Neither have ever been charged in any way and still function perfectly. I wish they were still as cheap as they were then 😂

Thank you. I love having a fridge. What a difference it makes on long trips. No ice and soggy food at the bottom of the cooler. It’s been a great upgrade. The SetPower 45 is the same exact fridge as the Iceco 45. Just a different brand name. Otherwise identical.

You did it the right way, but damn it was a lot of work to add two cig sockets in the back.

Not a bad idea. I have a 4runner as well. I plug my Alpha700 614wh(like your ecoflow) into my 12 volt cig socket in the rear, charging 75-100 watts the whole drive. Simultaneously my 32quart fridge (35-60 watts), rechargeable fans, and GoLabs R150 204wh are plugged in to the Alpha700. As long as I make a decent drive every 48 hours, I never drop below 40%. Next step for me is rooftop solar to break the 48hr limit.

I was lucky if I could get 65w of power to charge my EcoFlow off the 12v socket. Charging camera gear and running my fridge was just too much even while driving. Could barely charge the EcoFlow enough on long drives to keep the fridge running throughout the night and morning. Looking forward to trying out this new solution.

The setup/config you described is the way I run mine today: 4Runner car charger>>>Bluetti>>>Dometic. I sure like the cleaner cable setup this video would provide, but still can't decide if the incremental effort is worth the incremental benefit. I'm leaning towards YES, but it might be more out of my desire to tinker with my truck and clean-up cable/cord clutter, than actual NEED. Also, I stumbled across a video from Tinkerer's Adventure where he combines an Ecoflow Delta2 with a 12-24V booster. It's a sweet setup, but it would require me to reconfigure my csrgo area...so more work!

Simple is best. When going through the firewall, it's advisable to use a "drip loop." Before going through the grommet, have the wire run below the grommet and then loop back up and then go through. This way, any water in the engine bay is diverted away from the point of penetration. Also, how many volts is your AGM battery getting? It likes to get more than the OEM battery.

Thank you for the advice. There is a drip loop but I didn’t point that out in the video. Thanks for catching. As far as the Odyssey AGM battery, it’s getting 13.8v. I have been topping it off with a AGM specific battery charger about every two weeks to a month but am thinking of installing a VoltageBooster Pro to take care of this for me and get more out of my alternator. I’ve been doing a lot of research on this and wow, there is mixed feelings out there on whether or not it’s necessary. The VoltageBooster Pro has two settings, the first gives you about 14.1v for everyday use and the second setting about 14.8 or 14.9v when you are needing a little extra. Going to do a little more homework before I move forward. Thanks for watching and thanks for your advice!

Nice video! So when you stop for long-ish periods, how do you keep your fridge on? Then do you plug in your Ecoflow? I've been wanting to put an Anderson plug where you put your car charger....and a couple of 100w USB-C's on the other side and wondered if I had enough clearance back there. Looks like I do if I don't over-spec my anderson. Love the idea of a dedicated plug JUST for the fridge. I was going to remove that rear panel/trim, but I can't find anything anywhere on how to do that, so must be too hard.

That’s correct. I plan to also charge the EcoFlow while I’m driving. At full charge the EcoFlow can power the fridge for 2-3 days depending on temperature outside. I was only able to get about 60 watts of charging power out of the factory 12v outlet previously so I could never recharge the EcoFlow even close to 100% even after driving most of the day. So between the EcoFlow (and i also have a jump pack for the starter battery just incase) I should be in good shape. Let me know how your project goes.

@@destinationjourney_overlandsee if you can fit a group 31 battery in your truck. If your going to spend the money better to go bigger even if you have to make a mod to fit it.

Question: do you not have a 120v AC plug in the rear of your 4Runner to charge your Ecoflow?
@destinationjourney_overland
@destinationjourney_overland 5 ай бұрын
Great question. I discovered the Ecoflow battery requires a clean source of AC ( pure sine wave ). The 4Runner AC outlet provides a modified sine wave signal which is not compatible with the Ecoflow. I had to rely on charging it from the DC outlet which forced me to have my fridge and camera gear plugged into the EcoFlow while it was also charging. Which, was counter productive. Now I can separately charge my EcoFlow while running my fridge and charging my camera gear from separate power sources. So when I get to camp, my EcoFlo will be fully charged.

@@destinationjourney_overland thanks. this is super helpful. I just bought a Ecoflow and was planning to run it off of my AC plug while have the fridge plugged into it. I was also looking at the 400W ANYTIME WIRING HARNESS that would allow that AC plug to run beyond 100W while driving to take care of the charging problem.
@destinationjourney_overland
@destinationjourney_overland 5 ай бұрын
I looked into that briefly but my EcoFlow doesn’t even recognize the AC outlet.

I’m sorry but I’m not running my fridge off of my starting battery when I’m sometimes two days from the nearest town with no cell service and only a sat. communicator. First of all there is no redundancy if you have a malfunction in the panel or you ruin your food because your fridge died it could be the difference between life and death. Redundancy is key

I can appreciate your concern. I do carry a NOCO battery jump pack incase I do make a mistake and let my starter battery get to low. I also have the EcoFlow external for backup and that can run my fridge for up to 2 days. I just struggled with the old setup recharging that battery. I have seen numerous others running a similar setup and feel confident it will work for me. I’m not someone who’s running a blender, hair dryer, coffee maker… thanks for watching the video and thank you for your comment. Happy Wheelin! And happy new year.
