When I wanted a new aquarium we talked to our rental agency before spending the money. They said if we wanted anything above a 10 gallon that we needed renters insurance of atleast $100,000. No big deal because we planned on it anyway. What is very important with renters or homeowners insurance is that the policy specifically states coverage for aquariums. Many have flood insurance but do not realize that the policy does not include aquariums or appliances. So make sure you have specific coverage.

Your videos are real life and great advice... today I have to comment on "Baby Kitty". I also have a 'puppy cat', Ragdoll, that demands a special 'our time' once a day, then he's reassured of my love and goes off for other adventures around the house. We love cats, and seeing them on your channel, seeing they are treated so well makes me want to watch even more! Thanks for being good to your cats! (and, of course, your fish!) What was hysterical was when John was trying to speak with a cat all up in his face, my Jax (the Ragdoll) was rubbing his chin on my phone (I have to have a ring kickstand on my phone because Jax hates being ignored over it and will try to swat it away) but, between two cats at least I heard the video!😂

John, you are totally to blame for my "bigger is better" addiction! I had a 35 gallon tropical fish tank and happened upon one of your videos about making an HOB filter better. I saw you African cichlid tank and it was love at first site! I gor a 55g tank and some mbunas. I love them so much that I got a 75g and more mbunas. Luckily, we own our place. I've only had the mbunas a year, and I got rid of my tropical fish and smaller aquarium. Now, I'm trying to figure out how to move my 75 to make room for a 125g tank that my hubby got me for Christmas! It was going to be a surprise, but it's not like it's easy to hide something that big and heavy. He told me he wanted to get me a 150g tank, but his wallet had the final say. I never knew what African cichlids were, so it really is YOUR FAULT. Thank you, John!!!!

When our builder caught wind of our plans to reduce non master bedroom to accommodate 125 plus the 40 filtering tank he advised that yes a water bed has just as much water but it is shallow meaning wide. A tank is deep and narrow concentrating the weight on just a few joists. We are very pleased we were talked out of it upstairs as putting it down in the family room means we get to see it so much more and the concrete slab has no complaints.

Things are easier up here in the cold north. If it’s a rented apartment the landlord is obliged by law to keep an insurance to the building which will cover all damage to the building if an “accident” should happen. It will cover all damage to other inhabitants of the building, carpets and furniture etc. It will however not cover any damage to the property to the owner of the leaking aquarium. He will need to sign another insurance to cover damage to his own property. But both the owner of the building and the owner of the aquarium will get their losses covered. And no, the landlord may not enter the apartment if he’s curious. He may enter if theres an accident happening and/or if he has made an agreement with the guy renting the apartment. And the contract of the lease must specific say if there’s a ban on keeping animals of fur or feathers or an aquarium. The landlord can’t show up later and complain.

Thankfully when I got started in fishkeeping it was my cousin that got me involved 20 years ago. At that time he was my source for fish keeping as there wasn't a KZfaq. I did have in my apartment where I'm living now a 10 gallon and a 20 gallon long aquarium. I got rid of them because I thought I was going to be moving a long distance and I didn't want to take the chance that the fish were going to die. So I donated them and the aquariums and the stands and everything to my local fish store. A year later I got back into it but this time I'm playing it safe. I just have a 3 gallon that sits on my desk and it homes a betta fish and a mystery snail. When I do end up moving to a larger apartment hopefully soon or buying a home is when I will get a second larger tank.

I had EXACTLY this issue this week! Honestly I didn’t even think to mention the tanks as I just didn’t see it any differently to having a TV unit plugged in! I got a slap on the wrist for not informing my landlady about the tanks but luckily (they’re in good shape and sturdy) was allowed to keep them! But great video, as it’s something I didn’t even think about mentioning!

I have seen a few leases with pet restrictions, tanks included. Never had a tank while renting. Now that I own my house, my wife and I discuss if a new tank is coming and where it is located. This includes weight and potential water damage. I also think about would it take to move it. And you know that is the cat's video and house you are allowed to stay at as Manservant. I know this as the Calico Sisters own the house my job is feed, litter, and pay attention to them. All else is secondary. They don't mind watching the live TV, aka tanks either.

My landlord saw our fish during an emergency call for our bathroom and family room flooding due to him putting off sewage maintenance. He ignored the lease saying no fish allowed and added the fish when we resigned our lease months later since we didn't ask him to replace our damaged furniture. It was a good trade.

SO glad I just watched this. Unfortunately, I recently became severely allergic to almost all animals, plants, and foods-- I can't even own reptiles. My allergies trigger major blood vessels to close so avoiding them is non negotiable. My husband got me my first fish-- a female betta (she's my world) so I could have have a pet in the room. This led to more fish tanks really fast-- from 3gals (triops) up to a 55 gal (salt) because they were all I had-- I had lost many pets, most my stuff, and my career. We recently found out part of the cause was a heart infection from mold in the apartment (in a ceiling). Now we are moving ASAP. I never would have thought to mention the tanks to potential new apartments...Also, I found out you CAN be allergic to fish tanks lol. Fortunately it's just the salt tank.

I turned out to be allergic to my saltwater fish tank. And the ocean! Now avoid both. I’m thinking of making me betta tank blackwater for his health but I’m afraid of the mold and fungi.
@FurFeathersAndScales
@FurFeathersAndScales Жыл бұрын
@@quix66hiya22 Thats a fair worry, but there is hope. The species of fungi will be different like how different mammals are from each other so people are usually only allergic to a few species. I'm very allergic to so many common molds that I have to wear special masks leaving the room I live in (including the rest of the apartment-- I cant go in grocery stores at all), but I can have the fresh water tanks in my room. We use the glass folding lids that have a tighter seal just in case. Great idea about the blackwater. I may consider it for our OG betta, but keep her in a 5g in the bathroom at first for easy disinfecting just in case lol.

On rentals and utilities - where I live, water is usually included because the water company is the only utility that can put a lien on the deed of a house for unpaid utilities. It definitely ends up in the home owner's best interest around here to pay the water themselves.

I love your channel & the cats. I have fish & cats. Of the 6 cats I have only 1 pays any attention. And she's a kitten & as she matures she's losing interest. At first tho she did EVERYTHING she could to try to get into & at the fish. And the crazy thing was that the fish actually swam right up to her as if asking if she wanted to be friends. Cutest thing ever ! All is good tho - We watched Lily the kitten closely & made sure she couldn't get to the fish. She was quite interested in all the cords too which resulted in her getting her bottom smacked a few times, but better than getting electrocuted....

Absolutely! It was really scary for me to go in and ask permission to have my aquarium. I was sure my landlords were going to say no because we have really strict pet rules in my place. 1 pet per unit, with very high pet fees. And I'm already over that limit (I have 2 cats... I already got special permission to have both of them!).... I really wanted at least a 29 gallon tank, but the lease says 10 gallon or below. But hey, all you can do is ask, and the worst they can do is say no, right? So I mustered up the courage and asked, and to my surprise they said yes! Of course they had to contact the insurance guys and investors who own my building and get permission from them as well, and they also agreed with stipulations. I have to keep the aquarium on the bottom floor only, and I had to pay a hefty water damage deposit. But it was totally worth it. Even in my place, with really strict rules, I got permission. But I can't stress enough how important it is to ask first!!!

We got aquariums after we signed our lease, we had a sprinkler inspection with the leasing managers present and we didn’t have an issue, we have a 30 gallon and a 5 gallon on a 3rd story, but we already have top notch renters insurance and we pay our own electric and water. I also do laundry for my job and I our family of 3 does bathe/shower every day, that combined with my ibs and I think the tanks might go unnoticed with the amount of water usage 😅 when I think about the the initial set up of that 30 gallon and water changes pale in comparison to just running the kiddo a bath just once 🤣 trying to be a little more conscious though and waste less water 😬😬 also probably didn’t say anything because we keep our apartment impecable so they probably were like “whatever, this looks like someone with major OCD live here and they probably micromanage the aquariums anyway.” 🤣 which is uh… true.

That water damage potential is why washing machines and dryers are often located in the basement. I do find it weird that anyone used to cats and dogs would ever worry about hair or even notice :) I am the landlord or I am a servant to all the animals inside and outside, never get to eat all off anything by myself, or even go to the bathroom alone. I hadn't thought about how damaging a broken aquarium could be for some types of buildings. In my country, almost 100% of the buildings have brick walls and concrete slabs or are 100% concrete, so 4000 liters of water spilling in my 3rd-floor living room would surely ruin some stuff and be a real PITA, but the building itself wouldn't be affected at all.

As soon as I received that dreary email, I called them and negotiated paying more rent. They asked me how big is the tank and what type of fish I have. I told them the truth, 29 gallon and harmless small fishies. Their first intention was to make me pay 120 extra a month, but after describing what I have, they lowered to 30 extra a month, which I pay and since then, I enjoy and love my fishies a lot more. Thank you, John. This is indeed the biggest problem I had so far with my fishkeeping hobby.

Wow man that "half my audience" joke! That just made you my favorite fishkeepers on youtube, no matter which side you're on, well played bud! I haven't purchased my first aquarium yet, I've been researching it for a couple of years the time is just not quite right yet and I want to take it seriously for the sake of the animals. Thanks for your videos. I think i'm going to do a 125 with a 40 as a sump below it and some type of schooling/shaoling species. Maybe barbs, maybe pirhana, then again, african cichlids are nice, I dunno man but I have time to deliberate.

@@reginaphalange9316 I think I remember Matt Walsh talking about getting into fishkeeping a while back... Can't be sure that's the guy he's referring to, but if it is I get why he wouldn't want to say his name, he's quite a polarizing commentator 😅

I have a 55-gallon goldfish tank and was torn between buying a 75-gallon to give my 7 water babies more room and setting up an existing 29-gallon that was in storage for the last couple years to do tropicals again. I haven't even cycled my 29 yet when my wife saw the writing on the wall and is preparing for our getting a 75. This is why I'll never get my first tattoo.

Offering up a better bed option for the cat and patting it trying to convince the cat of it's superior comfort...only to be rejected. How many times have we all done this. 🤣 She doesn't know you're doing this video for us, she hears you talking in a stressed manor and wants to comfort you. My black cat Ooky always knows when I need to pet her. Yes, we needs more cats 🐈

John, Baby kitty is definitely the star of the show lol. I have two cats myself your missing baby kitty emoji lol. Appreciate this video buddy. Definitely worth it to ask because this hobby can get expensive and then be told that you can't and now you're stuck with what do I do now. That would suck. Great advice and good reminders.

"Hours and hours of aquarium content..... hopefully ours" - yours has the best tank shots. Granted it makes me want a bigger tank......and I already have a 60L that is cycling with a 4ft tank awaiting collection next week.....i don't really need another one. Yet.

Keeping my fish was one of the reasons I was determined to buy myself a house. Granted I went down from multiple small tanks to a single 90gal tank (I made sure to brace my floors before setting it up), but that's until I can set up my garage as a fish room. 😜

You doing alright John? I've only seen a couple videos, but I'm worried the stress is winning. You need to just sit in front of a tank and watch until your mind goes blank.
