Today I tell you about an update that makes it so you no longer require gas cans to carry gasoline in Project Zomboid.

Resourcefulness is extremely important in survival games. It's always frustrating when your character can't MacGyver their way through a situation even though you personally could. Updates like these are very welcome.

A really cool addition would be make shift armor like in world warz where brad pitt taped a magazine around his arms to prevent bites

yeah i agree, not only it makes the gameplay more fun by giving you alternate options, but it always gives that feeling of 'holy shit you can actually do this!' which is great

makes starts a lot more consistent. gas stations in the starter towns all have parking lots and convenience stores nearby. run in, grab a soda, hop in cars till you find one with a key... boom, you have a vehicle

I like the extra challenge of needing a gas can, but it really doesn't make any sense. Maybe next they'll let us demolish wooden stairs without a sledgehammer.

Yeah! Maybe it’s just me, but every time I got lucky and found usable cars in the starting week, I had a hard time finding gas cans. And in a “normal” start where usable cars are hard to be found, I could find gas cans every other block. It was so ridiculous that one time I got a working car(without gas) with key in front of my house in the first morning. And it took me 3 weeks, raiding half of the Muldraugh, to find one gas can. And during that time, I found 2 more cars with keys. The game sure knows how to taunt.

@0:11 The gas cans can contain more gasoline than a single bottle and weight is an issue, too. An alternative is not necessarily a replacement.

@@HornyIndianMan IIRC the standard red can model they use is like 3-4 gallons. I do not know if it in game holds that much, but I'd recognize the plague of my youth anywhere.

My sandbox settings always have working cars a tiny bit more common, so this update makes me happy. I hate the whole "try 20 vehicles and they're all locked broken or out of commission".

IRL I've had cars fire up 2, 3 and once even 5 years of just sitting around. Granted, I put fuel stabilizer in them and put them on blocks to avoid tire damage, and removed the batteries, but they required 20-30 mins of prep to get started up again. I let a beater Hyundai sit untouched for 3 years, and all it needed was a boost and a lot of pedal pumping during cranking (carburetted) but it came to life pretty readily.

I get that the point of many of these cars being locked or broken down is to provide some challenge at the start. At the same time, I can't imagine every car in the country being out of gas or broken down only three days into the outbreak, especially since most of the inhabitants are dead by Day 3.

Bro I have a save in which I have made three bases between two towns, leveled carpentry to 10 on two characters, looted all of muldraugh and half or rosewood, and still have not found a gas can. This update is a godsend, I haven't had power since the first month and winter is coming.

Visit the auto shop in west point that is closest to louisville. I found like 6 of them there.

Search through the cars, any cars. They got them spawning in the trunk. Also all the other car tools, so if you need them finding a highway blocked by dozens car wrecks should give you great results, also just any road (ideally free of zombies) will have cars spawning every 100 tiles or so, very common sight. It's an amazing thing for speedrunning with something like Burglar though. You should now be driving a car in the first day consistently.

For those of us playing with "more loot settings" with loot turned down to nearly zero this is actually a huge change. I went probably 2 weeks in game killing over 1600 zeds and didn't find a gas can in a single mansion along the west shore of Louisville. Where as I found like 6 water bottles in the first few days.

As someone who lives next door to the industrial suburb of Deer Park, I still get the giggles that the name of that town is used to sell bottled water. FYI, if you've ever seen Blade Runner, imagine the shots flying over LA with all the industrial stuff and giant random gouts of flame. That's what's directly north of Deer Park. The only real difference is that real-world industrial areas are well-lit by sodium vapor lights.

I know most of you can tell the difference between real life and fantasy, so this probably doesn't need to be said, BUT: Do NOT pour gasoline into plastic bottles irl. Gasoline will melt the bottle, straight up. It is very dangerous to do this.

I desprately, desprately want the gasoline to degrade plastics that aren't meant for it. Like, sure, you can put it in a drink bottle, but you better use it quick or you run the risk of the gas eating the plastic and spilling.

It's the right to say things we disagree with, or to act in ways that we oppose, so long as they don't infringe upon the rights of others. One time I was with my dad while he was checking up on a generator we have (or had). For some reason, he put some gasoline in a solo cup and it melted through it. Maybe not the most realistic addition, but it is a game where rotting corpses that rarely if ever do basic living functions somehow avoid rotting to bones over the course of years. Or, you know, die of dehydration.

It they make it easier like that I believe they should require a hose to siphon it. As an alternative you could pierce the tank (thus destroying it) to fill a container.

I've probably had gasoline in my mouth a dozen or so times (siphoning, usually to put it down the throat of a carb) - it is very unpleasant and stays in your mouth for hours.

Whatever you do, never try this in real life. The gas will eat right through a plastic bottle. But you can drink it in real life, but I'm pretty sure, hopefully, people know better. I siphon gas here an there irl and it definitely doesn't taste pretty lol. Great video and tip, much love fellow Zomboid players.

Well I traded a gas can for another player to hotwire a car for me on my first mp server and I had more generators than gas cans in my safe house since it was already late game I assume most of the cans were taken so I had a beat up car I would tow when getting gas and using the extra car as a fuel container. I would like it if you could keep gas in barrels or the ability to craft something like it or something like it exists and I missed it.

You can also drive to the pumps, and then get close to the pumps and left click on your car. It should say “refuel from gas pump” or something like that.

sure, but for long-term storage, as cans are essential, as using additional vehicles to store gas will ultimately result in losing your gas to leaky tanks, unless the tank is at 100% finctionality. KEvron

I don't know... the on-foot portion of the game's progression is shortened, there's no longer a need to go on a quest for a gas can, it no longer feels like a valuable treasure, getting a car is less rewarding, and now I accidentally put gas in my drinking bottles sometimes. I see a lot of people commenting that they like it because it makes the game easier. It's a zombie apocalypse, man. I want to experience desperation. I want finding a gas can to feel like "FINALLY I can gas up and get out of town!"

There are SO many ways you can make pz harder in sandbox, you can create an absolutely punishing experience if you want to. Being able to put gas in bottles is just realistic, but that's my opinion.

@@eartheclipse8 Sure, but I'm speaking more about the vanilla experience, because you could also go into sandbox and make things easier. And if you want realistic, you should have to search for a rubber hose to syphon gas from cars.

Maybe you can get hoses at storage facilities and if you connect them to a rain barrel on a floor above you can actually water your crops more easily. Plus you get to syphon gas from cars. I wonder if it would be too difficult to implement, but a survivor can dream!

To be fair, what kind of nincompoop would fill a pop can or water bottle with gasoline. Most of those containers won't even hold a one liter of liquid. Which makes them a bit pointless, both IRL and in Project Zomboid. I know that I wouldn't even bother with such containers. Even a bucket or water can would make a better alternative!

Yeah, Ive had a few runs where for whatever reason I just cant find any gas cans lol I tried using a mod that allowed me to use other bottles to collect gasoline, but it never worked right for me :( Glad they finally implemented this into the base game, because Im _always_ finding a ton of bleach I know Ill never use lol Now I can put those bottles to good use.

Gas bottles are a good thing, if you can't find a gas can early on. But you need quite some bottles, or many trips from car to car, to get any useful amount of gas. I always carry a couple of Gas bottles only for an emergency. I use the wine ones, since it can double as Molotov cocktails too, for instance when going for loot in the shops next to Dixie Hwy, I can blaze a freaking horde and then herd them all along the Hwy to bring more zeds to the Blazing Hell Train 😂

I've used the Water & Gas API mods for ages, so never had this problem, but for the vanilla players, this is going to remove a huge pain in the arse. Nothing worse than finding a nice working car in a gas station car park but being unable to carry a few litres of fuel to it.

The title is a bit misleading. While yes you can use water bottles to collect fuel, it only holds 1.5 units of liquid, while a gas can can hold 10. And this isn't a game where you can waste time. So only use bottles if there's no other choice.

Yeah I would use bottles like that for real. However I seriously need a gas can. I'm not going to fill a bottle 20 times to get the amount of gas I really need. I've been checking if I can fill up those metal barrels with gas. So far don't seem like it. So I just collect gas cans for now and just fill up a ton of those in one trip.

Not total, but I agree. It might be a lot of work for little gameplay. I can totally see coffee, beer and pop being a nice concoction though. Crafting is something some people like a lot. Like cooking in PZ, it's practically useless, but to each his own. It's easy to ignore it.

My game keeps crashing after i updated I checked the files and found an error txt file showing java runtime error blablabla I checked online and not a single good solution was found so...i probably won't be able to play the game anymore or till they update it again 😑

Can you dump gas into a water container like a rain collector barrel. For example for storage

Are you really grabbing gasoline from the pump to put it in your car 2 feet away? You can actually just pull the car closer to the pump and fill directly from the pump by right clicking on the car when it's close

It's for when you find a car with a key but no gas. Same with generators.
