WE ARE BACK! Join us as we discuss Ian Fleming's novel You Only Live Twice as a part of #flemingreadingchallenge ! Grab a drink and a comfortable chair as we chat, in Book Club style, about our opinions on the plot, prose, and influence this book has on the franchise and on all of us. Special guests join me in the adventure and excitement!

When David is not running an advertising and marketing company, his hobby is The Bond Experience which is primarily a video blog where he discusses Bond experiences and the people and brands that help to create those experiences...

YOLT is my favorite Bond novel. We need a proper film adaptation of it along with Moonraker.

Bummed that I missed this. You Only Live Twice remains my favorite of Fleming's novels. I'll be sure to make it for the next one.

One interesting thing about YOLT novel is that it was serialised in Playboy magazine. Interesting end for the "Blofeld Trilogy."

Great listen in the car. I think not deep diving the obituary was a missed opportunity.

This was great to watch and what a great selection of guests too! I particularly agree with Blofeld's death failing to live up to its full potential, especially when you consider how Fleming described dressed in heavy Japanese armour which would have made for an impressive showdown if kept it on. And Jeremy is spot-on with how the final scene is such a gut-punch. Look forward to the next one!

I've been a Bond fan since I was a teenager. And believe me, this is not me knocking on the movies. But, I first read Ian Fleming's novels for the first time when I was in high school when Penguin was publishing them in paperback. I love the movies so much more than the movies. Fleming's novels are set in a more real world. The gadgets aren't so much a thing. He's a more human character.

I just finished this book, one of Fleming’s best (imo). Interesting how it starts with Bond on the verge of being fired for essentially being a listless employee. Could be a good discussion video with head of section - can Bond a bad employee, but a good agent?

Something that I just thought of after listening to this, and especially after you, David, said Cary Fukanaga said "be sure to read YOLT".... Obviously at the end of NTTD, Bond is (for all intents and purposes) killed off, and we even get the little MI6 memoriam toast.. but like you mentioned earlier in the novel, MI6 assumes Bond is dead - yet he is very much alive, but just living with amnesia with Kissy....... Now, this is a long shot, and I'm really stretching the plausibility here lol - but we never saw a body, we never saw even as much as a casket with a flag draped over it.. do you think this amnesia angle could be something that they use to introduce the new Bond taking over for Daniel Craig? Because in a sense it would almost be like doing a reboot of the character within the context of the story, because he is learning to be James Bond all over again, and it would be a way to maintain continuity in the traditional Bond sense - which is loose, but moving forward 🤷 Now I don't personally think they will do this, they seem pretty firm and definitive that he was killed.. but it's something to ponder..

Wonder why Fleming had Bond leaving Kissy without even knowing she's pregnant and leaving it there, never refers to it in TMWTGG. Why did he leave the outcome of her pregnancy up in the air, did she have the child? Lost it in a miscarriage? Why didn't she tell Bond that she was pregnant? Despite other authors suggesting Bond had a child (a son James according to some although no such suggestion by Fleming). Was Fleming's intention solely to totally draw a line under and move on from his Japanese adventure? It is intriguing to speculate given this is the penultimate Fleming Bond novel.

I agree, it's a bit disappointing that The Man With The Golden Gun picks up when Bond comes back from Vladivastok and the events of You Only Live Twice are very quickly dealt with and then that's that. Fleming did that a lot, the events of previous novels are almost never acknowledged. For example Vesper dies at the end of Casino Royale and her name is never even mentioned again until OHMSS. Also I don't know if Fleming wanted Golden Gun to be the last novel because he probably would've had Bond confronted about Kissy's child in another book but he sadly died before he could even do a final draft of Golden Gun so we'll never know what he wanted to do.

I do wonder if Fleming was suggesting that what Bond wanted with Tracy [a partner, children, life beyond the surface] wasn't attainable for him? He basically gets that with Kissy, all be it in a different personna but walks away from it to go back to his old life? Maybe I'm reading too much into it but given that his character arc in YOLT is Bond rediscovering his humanity that might be what he was going for. We'll never know if Fleming planned to do more with that story sadly [the published TMWTGG is basically a first draft and if Fleming was in better health the success of the films would have put pressure on him to write more].

Perhaps it's because Fleming didn't enjoy his married life. I have watched a documentary about Ian Fleming. Maybe he wrote James Bond as someone he wished he was.

@@klaudiagrob I agree, Ian Fleming says as much himself "People do connect me with James Bond simply because I happen to like scrambled eggs and short-sleeved shirts and some of the things that James Bond does, but I certainly haven't got his guts nor his very lively appetites". Seems Fleming used Bond to be his ideal fantasy character he wished he was.

Movie or Novel ? Hhmm hard to say. I wish that we saw Bond dealing with Tracy's death and then pursuing Blofeld. Connery's visible boredom and anger really do come across on screen. The novel is a direct sequel and response to On Her Majesty's Secret Secret Service. Diamonds Are Forever movie which is a sequel isn't dealing with it. It's like a comedy. Moore's movies mentioned Tracy twice. For me Tracy being murdered is something that should have an impact. After all a lot of people are looking for character development.

Out of the Blofeld trilogy this was my least favorite Bond novel. It doesn’t have the deftness of Majesty, which in my opinion is hands down the best Bond novel
