1:58 im an alto in my schools choir and for one of the songs we sang at our last concert the alto part was 4 notes for a 3 minute song. The choir director also hates the entire alto section for no reason. So yes it is pretty much the viola of choir

You can understand pitch and learn to realize what notes are being played. Perfect pitch you can realize it quicker and analyze it better in your mind. He even told an interviewer to flat out “just study”. The interviewer had no clue what he was talking about and kept ignoring Charlie to have him do more sounds for perfect pitch.

You only need relative pitch to do most things people with perfect pitch can do (play songs by ear, name notes). Relative pitch can be strengthened with musical training. As someone with perfect pitch, it is constantly annoying because of people trying to test me and I don’t benefit much than if I had relative pitch. It’s not like as soon as you have perfect pitch, you can play any song first try listening to it. That takes years of musical training with or without perfect pitch.

Jack Hagar Perfect pitch might be “cooler” because you don’t need that reference note to know the pitch of any other note.

@@rocelderamos3013 I think that’s a flawed way to identify perfect pitch because you can recognize a pitch without needing an external reference, it’s possibly to memorize what pitches sound like although that’s not really perfect pitch.

I thought alto parts were written in alto clef? Soprano in soprano or mezzo-soprano clef, alto in alto clef, tenor in tenor clef and bass in bass clef. Viola is also written in treble clef alot.

That’s messed up. I’m a soprano but fully respect all vocal ranges. Making fun of an alto is even worse than making fun of a viola player although I think that’s messed up too. You can’t help where your range lies and every part is needed in the world of music.

I've always thought the alto part is more challenging because you actually have to read all the time instead of following the melody. There aren't enough altos in my school choir, so the sopranos who read music the best are often moved to the alto section.

I made a move from 2nd soprano to 1st alto years ago and have enjoyed myself very much in the alto section. We get to sing beautiful harmony lines and to train our ears to listen well. Also, I have sung with many choirs and found out something in common. The alto section is hardworking and generally warmer and more united. Eg we would practice our part together before rehearsal (self initiated) and we would always take pictures as a section before concert. I don’t necessary see other sections do that often though. I wonder why? 🤔

The alto part is equivalent to the viola part because the viola is an alto instrument (thats why it has the alto clef)

In San Francisco we have a classical music club! It’s called soundbox and the Symphony turns a big rehearsal space into a nightclub and gets classical musicians to play. It’s their attempt to “connect with the youths” and it’s pretty popular!

Unpopular opinion: Altos are the most important part of a 4-part choir. They hold the middle of the music together, even if their part isn't the most dramatic. Sopranos will always be heard because they are higher-pitched and they have the melody 95% of the time. Tenors are just male sopranos... easy for them to project because they are in their upper register as well. And basses sing the root of everything, and even when they don't, they are still the lowest voice so it's easier to pick them out. But altos have a low-range female voice which is harder to project, is right in the middle of all the other voices, and they're not as grounded to the root as the basses are. I'd almost want to have twice as many altos than sopranos in my choir just to be sure that the richness of their part is heard.

Trust me in my schoolchoir we was two altos versus four tenors and one bass versus 80 sopranos.... and they could hear us. It’s hard to sing against such a mass sopranos but it goes.....

Was an alto2 from my school choir last time, thank you so much for this explanation. Its been almost 10 years and I still remember all those training to really try and project my chest voice especially when there were only 3-4 of us in the whole choir.
