On their 20th date, Trish (Catherine Keener) tries to take their relationship to the next level, but Andy (Steve Carell) still isn't ready.
The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005) Living alone, 40-year-old Andy Stitzer (Steve Carell) spends his free time playing video games and curating his action-figure collection. Despite his age, Andy has never had sex, so his friends, including the laid-back David (Paul Rudd), push Andy towards losing his virginity. While attempting to get over his awkwardness around female customers, Andy meets local shop owner Trish (Catherine Keener), and they begin a tentative romance.

That’s not an original thought. Paul Rudd’s character made the same analogy in the movie before Steve Carell’s character yelled at him not to open the toy out of the box.

I mean, REALLY, a guy like Andy IN REAL LIFE would probably only have these problems with women because he’s subconsciously “self-sabotaging” himself (basically, because he puts people OFF with his WEIRDNESS because he doesn’t just 100% OWN IT and people can SENSE when someone is insecure about themselves since it usually manifests as AWKWARDNESS in SOCIAL SETTINGS).

It really doesn’t make sense that she appreciates how much the action figures will sell for but then doesn’t understand how important it is to keep the items in good condition in order to keep their value. That goes for anything not just action figures. If I received a damaged item I ordered off of Amazon, much less a valuable collectible, I would of course request a refund. Money lost for the seller.

Its hilarious that Apatow was viewed as misogynistic back when these movies came out. The actual message behind all of his movies is basically "men are stupid they need a woman to teach them how to grow up". If anything its like a misandrist theme runs throughout all of his movies. But people back then were like "durrrr the men are funny and the woman always plays the straight characters he must hate them!"

@@kalyana9705 Personally I think he wrote/writes both men and people to be terrible people. The perfect example is "Love" with Gillian Jacobs and Paul Rust. With this movie, the guys are idiots but most of the women are crazy, especially in the speed dating section. In Knocked Up, it is the same thing, the guys are immature but we see the women lose their tempers more often and act erratic several times.

Trish felt a little rejected and hurt by Andy when she was trying to connect with him and he didn’t respond the way she was hoping by making her his most important priority. Andy was nervous and scared because of his lack of experience with physical intimacy and instead of being honest and vulnerable and dealing with those difficult emotions his sympathetic nervous system activated his fight or flight response and tried to distance himself from her by putting his focus on his action figures and becoming upset and allowing him to leave and avoid the pain of rejection when she finds out his secret. He was scared and tried to push her away before he got hurt.
