thanks for posting. I had a feeling her singing was much more traditional when she was young but still full of personality.

This is natural acting and singing. I will say I agree with the comments of her acting like he isn't even there

They directed her to pick up some Merman mannerisms. This was the road company. She was great.

I saw Stritch do Call me Madam around 1955 and about I saw Merman do it about 10 years later. By far, hands down Elaine was the very best.

she's terrific…but she doesn't engage with him at all…he tries to get her to look at him…she's just looking to steal the number from him.

mjj i I see your point! But Elaine is not yet anything close to an icon and I think she’s pretty hungry and she wants this opportunity to work for her! Also if I may read into it my own I feel like she still selling it to the foot lights from habit.

This looks like a TV version; I wonder how much that affected their delivery, especially as this sort of show was still pretty much in its infancy.

In her defense, I don't think this was very different from how Ethel Merman did it. Like, it wasn't uncommon for Merman to deliver her lines and her lyrics straight to the audience, as opposed to her co-stars. Maybe she was directed to do it this way?

Elaine should have looked at Russell at least once.

@ benYou were lucky I only got to see it once. I wonder if you were the usher in the section where we sat. The MUNI is one of the things I miss most about St. Louis.

So, this is what CALL ME MADAM would have been like had Merman not been able to do the show. Stritch would have done a great job and audiences would have been very happy. I wonder how many times she got to go on as Sally Adams. (I think Merman was very healthy during the run.)

Stritch did most of the national tour. Merman opened the tour in D.C. but then Stritch took over for the rest of the tour. So she did it plenty. Not sure if she ever went for Merman on Broadway. She was not the original standby. Nancy Andrews was the original standby. Stritch took over as standby about eight months into the run. Russell Nype did not do the tour so this may have been the first time they'd performed the number together in public.

...Elaine only got on the stage when she took it on tour. Catch Elaine's HBO filming of AT LIBERTY...Merman was ALWAYS on! lol

She was imitating the way Ethel Merman sang. You could hear hear Ethel perfectly from the top of the second balcony and no one used a microphone in the theater in those days!
@phillgreenland23904 жыл бұрын
Margaret Well, not a wireless microphone anyway. The footlight troughs were full of mics tho.

This was supposed to be a duet. Stritch's attempts to make it a show stopping solo are obvious. She does everything but hip bump him into the orchestra pit. As the understudy for the role, she should have kept studying Merman.

Those songwriters wrote their songs knowing Ethel and Fred Astaire would introduce their masterpieces. Nobody beats Ethel, this is awful.
