I've just started learning to swim and it's been a year so far, idk why I'm just now learning about it, but my lack of rotation has probably been the biggest thing holding me back. Now that I'm starting to pick up on it, everything is finally starting to come together. Thank you for sharing your drills to correct this!

Hi from Turkey. Thank you for your swimming workout and courses. That's a detailed info and just the very crux of the swimming styles and techniques. I have considered myself a very good swimmer until this time. However, I 've just found many mistakes in my swimming. I also miss that American accent so much.

When you use a snorkel, how do you prevent water from entering your nose? Thanks.

Well, first, a question about those fins. Are they off set a little bit, as in more fin on the little toe side, and less fin on the big toe side? I currently use the Finis positive drive fins which are that way. They turn your feet in a bit for flutter kick and dolphin kick, which is much better than a gymnastic type toe point type of kick. Going pigeon toed gives you maybe 20 degrees more toe point/dorsi flexion, and you can use the whole side of your foot for more thrust. Learning this helped me take 25 seconds off of my 25 yard kick time, and yes, I have a very weak kick. We do not have flat feet like ducks or frogs, our feet are 3 dimensional. The way body rotation helps reduce drag is that the top side shoulder is out of the water so there is less surface area presented for 'frontal drag'. The way it increases your power is that you are applying a longer lever to the arm pull. Just using the shoulder as opposed to using a lever that starts at your spine, makes it a lot longer. The torso does not rotate as a unit. The power comes from a rotation, starting at the head and shoulders and going down to the feet. Kind of the opposite of ground based sports that use rotation which starts with an anchor on the feet and spirals up through the hips and out the arm, like throwing, or golfing, or a karate punch. I use the catch up drill to reinforce extra/full extension, full body length arm pull, catch and set up and high elbow/EVF and finish, and body rotation. Try adding an underwater arm pull to your one arm drill, some times called a dog paddle stroke, and pretty much like a breast stroke pull out stroke, well half of one.... Fins are not needed. if you do this, and you still use body rotation. Arms move opposite each other, like back stroke. I love snorkels!

I would add to the above, having some days to think about this. The 'torso rotates as a unit' part. The shoulders do not rotate as a unit, unless the swimmer is doing the windmill type arm pull. The pulling arm starts the rotation of the shoulders, then the recover arm finishes the rotation. They rotate independently from each other. The hips are fused and have to rotate together. Interesting to note, with the 1 arm drill, your pulling arm and that shoulder rotation precedes the hip rotation. Curious if you can explain that, especially since MSP says that the hips drive the shoulder rotation. If that was true, then the hips should rotate first, but they don't.

I have a meet tomorrow and I’m wondering how hard can you kick until there to much drag and need to not kick as hard
@myswimpro

It depends on the race! For a 50, get those legs moving as fast as you can. For a longer race, work on a 4-beat or 2-beat kick to keep moving but save energy. Check this out: blog.myswimpro.com/2023/01/09/how-to-improve-your-kick-in-swimming/

How do you use a snorkel without a mask to cover your nose? I tried to use just the snorkel and kept getting water up my nose.
@myswimpro
@myswimpro Жыл бұрын
You're going to want to practice blowing bubbles out of your nose while you swim! If you usually swim with a mask, practice swimming with normal goggles first before moving to a snorkel.
