Re: measurements. Do NOT buy something that is your exact measurements if it's in a material with no stretch. If it's wool, heavy cotton, etc you don't want it to fit you precisely, you want a little give so you can sit down and stuff. This comes up with vintage a lot because things are often in non-stretch material. Also! If something arrives and it wasn't quite what you were hoping for, ask yourself if you can alter it in some way before you toss it or re-sell it. Would a simple hem or crop do it? would you like it if you tied up one side? The perfect item is rare, so scrappy alterations are where it's at for folks on a budget :)

Yes, this is so true!! Honestly, I don't think it's advisable to buy anything that's completely fitted/structured on Depop because every body is different and there's no way of knowing what funny bulges and wrinkles are going to appear when you try it on. I learned that the hard way! 😅

ED help with measurements, measure in the system you didn't grow up with. Eg. I use inches now for measurement not cms so it remains arbitrary in my mind

I know my waist in inches, but not in cm! It’s so funny bc now i see the american measumenta and go « yep that ll work » and i see the european ones and go « why does it have to be in cm? Why can’t they just say the eu number (36/38/40 ect)

My favourite way of using depop is to find pieces of clothing I already own in different sizes if I’ve grown out of it. I already know I love that item so it won’t go to waste and I get to keep wearing something I enjoy

Honestly I feel like Depop in Italy has been specifically marketed as a very hip and cool marketplace and in fact is wildly unaccessible imo. But luckily Vinted expanded to Italy too and it's much better!!

a curiosity about the adidas shirt you were looking for... "oncada" (you actually read it like onssada) is a neologism, a mix of onça (portuguese for leopard) and -ada, wich is a suffix equivalent to -ed. so it'd be something like leoparded lol, that has been covered in leopards. That adidas print was a collaboration with brazilian brand FARM Rio. ;)

i recommend ebay for second hand clothes too, you can find some good deals a lot of the time because ebay just has a lot of older sellers (compared to depop) who aren't going to price gouge for trends, or resell at exponentially higher prices. you do get a lot of cheap new things in the results but you can filter for only second hand and for just sellers in your country, the ebay are filters are extensive and if you're frustrated trying to shop on there: filters and keywords are your best bet.

'They'll have the measurements in the description' HA, I feel lucky when people are putting brands and sizes down. I understand being a casual depoper, but it's frustrating for people who are trying to shop secondhand to find a listing with no information or bad/stock photos because it increases the likelihood of the next person being disappointed with the clothing item. I've learnt to buy secondhand from fast fashion shops I used to shop at and therefore where I know the sizing. As an example, I'm petite so I have a good sense of which fast fashion brands treat petite as hemming the length vs petite as a reason to skimp on fabric. I bought some some stripy culottes recently and lots of people were selling it so I literally asked every person selling it for measurements so I would get a good idea of the actual size. I don't think I got any consistent responses because people don't really know how to measure clothes but I did get an idea of what mythical letter size might translate to. I have a love/hate relationship with depop. I'm still at the point where the ratio of things I've bought and wanted to keep are outnumbered by the things that have not fit properly or not looked like their photo.

Love this video! Your slow fashion and thrifting videos are always incredible and right up my alley (I will be Tweeting this video and sending it to friends as soon as it releases publically, we are all Depop fiends.) There are a lot of tips on here that I'd never considered and think are brilliant! I always ask sellers for measurements before I buy an item (I have been wronged by people listing items as a size larger than they actually are strangely many times). Also, the seller getting back to you about measurements is a bit of a litmos test-- are they a kind, understanding, trustworthy, and communicative seller? Are they a rude or impatient seller? All things you want to have insight into on an app where you're buying things from people. I totally agree about reselling items at almost full price, too-- I find it so often with Lucy & Yak pieces, and I already have to pay through the teeth to ship stuff listed secondhand in the UK internationally to me.

I love depop so much and i’ve been using it a hell of a lot in the last year! I found winnie the pooh dungarees for 20 quid and they are my favourite thing ever!! I also found green cord trousers from sea salt cornwall for a fiver in a charity shop when they are £45 new! Im also buying from small businesses on depop and etsy more and im genuinely so happy doing my bit🥰

I've never been a fan of the concept of things like DePop and Vinted (I've never actually used them as last time I checked they're not available in Canada) and I think I've finally managed to narrow down why: 1: The well known issue of people raiding thrift stores etc and selling on items for jacked up prices, thus making these clothes unavailable to low income consumers. This has been talked about a lot, so I'll leave it at that 2: As far as I can tell, there's no option for narrowing down your search to your city or local area like there is on facebook marketplace. I feel like the packaging and shipping emissions that comes with transferring these items around at least partially detracts from the benefits of secondhand purchasing 3: A lot of it is re-sold fast fashion. It doesn't seem to be deterring people from buying fast fashion- if anything, now they can justify buying it because 'if I don't actually like it I'll sell it on DePop!' 4: People talk about how charity shops and thrift stores send large amounts of clothes overseas. Firstly, the summer I volunteered at a thrift store in the UK (circa 2016) everything either was sold or put in the rag bin to be sold to the rag man for recycling. Secondly, perhaps if this surge in interest in secondhand clothing was directed toward thrift and charity stores rather than online marketplaces, this volume of clothing would be reduced. Finally, surely the argument should then be that the onus is on us to only donate good quality, wearable clothes to charity stores and not just dump our scraps on them? 5: They perpetuate the culture of constantly needing new clothes which you will wear a few times and then discard/donate/resell, rather than addressing the issue that most of our clothing is poor quality, not designed to last, and we purchase way more than we need. This feeds back to the problem of people buying more clothes with the intent to sell it on DePop when they lose interest. Most of my clothing is from secondhand or charity stores. Every few weeks I'll take an hour or so to scout out the ones local (walking distance) to me to see if they have any high quality items. I have a mental catalogue of things to look out for (currently, 'appropriate' work button downs in fun patterns and cute summer wear). I keep pretty much everything I buy until I've worn it to shreds and then recycle the scraps. I know this is a privileged position compared to many people, but I doubt that many people buying luxury brands off depop would struggle to do what I do.

You have made some excellent points and there are definitely a lot people who treat depop as an easy way to get rid of their fast fashion items that they didn't end up liking or making a profit off of thrift store finds. Some counterarguments: I personally feel overwhelmed shopping IRL and charity shops are even worse for me. Plus I don't have a lot of local options. Which means that if I'm looking for something specific, it would be pot luck to get it at my local charity shop. Or I would have to venture further out with no guarantee of success. Having a lot of time is a factor to consider too - I have 3 charity shops near me which sell clothes but they are in opposite directions to my house. Walking to all of them without even looking would take more than an hour. With depop, I can search for what I want, find something within my price range and then most importantly, sit and think about whether I want it. As a seller, I actually love the idea that something I no longer want might get a better home somewhere across the country, with someone I'd never cross paths with or would never end up buying from my local charity shop if I had donated it instead. I do buy fast fashion from depop but it's specifically *because* I'm not buying it new and because I don't have the same options in ethical fashion. I have done a ton of research on slow fashion brands that fit my price and style, however, I'd still argue my options are limited. Plus buying secondhand over new is environmentally the better option. If most of what is available in the wider market right now is fast fashion, unfortunately that's most of what we're going to get. The same for charity shops. Until the tide turns away from poly-blends and low quality clothing, our secondhand options are fast fashion. And in certain cases, I'm glad for that - I'm allergic to wool and there's no warmer, cosier and affordable material than acrylic. I also volunteered at a local charity shop, back in 2013 and yes, what we got was either sold or put into recycling. But there are plenty of sources that can provide proof that this isn't the case across the UK and it's prevalent enough to be a problem. I agree that we should donate quality clothing - my rule is that I don't donate it to charity if I wouldn't wear it myself. I think depop and vinted are filling a gap and making secondhand shopping a lot more accessible to a lot of people. There are outliers who treat it as a place to just make money/cycle through fast fashion clothing but the culture is certainly shifting away from fast fashion and these apps have a lot to do with it. unfortunately the rag man is overseas. Very little textiles actually ever gets recycled and the rag man usually sells to poor contries in massive markets or sends whatever else to the landfill. I guess if it is a very specific one that wa well researched, maybe? but 9/10 the rag man is the overseas.

Thank you for keeping reminding me of the fast fashion downsides and reminding me about thrift stores. I have long shopped just at the thriftstores but now that I earn a bit more, I find myself occasionally thinking that I also deserve the exact clothes that I want. That perfectly reflect my personality and fit perfectly. Thus it is super easy to linger towards the big online clothing stores that you are guaranteed to find something just what you want. This video yet again got me searching for ways to find and prepare and modify pre-owned clothes. I seem to need constant reminding and inspiring towards this... dunno why. Maybe I'm a bit sick of always being a bit poor.

These tips are golden! For measurements it's very helpful to measure clothes you really like the fit of. So you're not measuring your body AND you might need different measurements for different clothing items (e.g. jogger pants can be narrower in the waist than rigid denim and if you've just used your body measurements, the joggers would slide down and the jeans would be too tight). I never online thrifted pants, but since the stores were closed during the panini and I grew out of some clothes, I really had to throw myself into online thrifting and found some gems!

Wow, this really resonated with me! It bothers me to no end when people put in the listing the original price of the item (why do I care, you're not H&M???) and expect you to pay that price! Another tip I would add to this is that most people will give you a discount if you ask nicely. As long you're reasonable, i.e. will you take $20 instead of $25?, a lot of sellers just want the items gone. Thanks for such an informative and thoughtful video as always. ❤️

I consider myself a seasoned depoper but had no idea there was so much to the search terms!! A tip I have is to message sellers and ask if they can reuse old packaging for your items so that your purchase is a little more eco friendly. They're usually more than happy to do so and it has started some lovely conversations in my experience!

I would really love to see the deep dive on the efficacy of thrifting, I'm fairly new to it as I've recently had to buy some new clothes (I wear everything to destruction so don't buy new to me items often) and didn't want to buy new so I tried depop.

Don't be afraid to ask questions to the sellers!! Most of them are really helpful and will tell you the measurements if they're not in the listing, or send more photos of an item. Other good things to ask are about the material of the item, like how see-through it is, or whether you need to iron it.

Literally already stopped using depop and moved to Vinted in 2014 because depop was so gentrified ☹️ but it’s good to try apps to see which is best. Sometimes FB marketplace isn’t bad either. Loved the tips and am your biggest fan 🤩

My tip for that would be to search for something without adding 'vintage'. It might be a bit harder to find but usually people overprice things when they say it's vintage. :)

vintage is so up and down! I think a lot of it has to do with brands. 60's mary quant is never ever going to be cheap because of how influential and iconic it was. Things also get rarer the further back you go.

The "search misspelled terms" bit is quite funny when you realize Addidas probably called it "Oncada" because the scientific term for jaguar is "Panthera Onca"... from the misspelled Portuguese Onça (/'On-zah/).

I'm so glad you said that at the beginning about the access to items you don't have time to search charity shops for! I see a lot of negativity online about reselling, but I live in an area where there is an abundance of good charity shops. I used to live in London, where they are expensive and picked over. I buy from charity shops for myself, and if I see something I love but that wouldn't fit me personally, I get it anyway and stick it on my depop. Some of those items are from the 'last chance rail' and just won't be bought locally, but may end up as rags or landfill. I price them depending on weight/postage, and it's a myth that resellers are making loads of cash - I wish!

These are such good tips! I've been trying to do most of my shopping either second hand or from super ethical business and I'm finding second-hand apps and websites so tricky 😅 Can't wait to try these tips next time I need something

Love that video. 💖 I'm a very analog person, so I prefer to buy in a thrift shop or at flee markets. But IF I shopped in apps like Depop, this video would have been very helpful to me! In my case it was "just" entertaining and a glimpse to a different world. 😘So great that you encourage people to think about their consumption of clothing! (Although I have to admit that I am a Maximalist and Gollum. 😬)

Big yes to searching brands and their brand terminology! Also yes to searching by fabric, actually I'm not buying plastic clothing and 90% of first hand clothes don't meet the "no polyester" criteria. I also find all of fast fashion falls off my radar that way.

1. Thesaurus is your best friend -> synonyms for colours and items of cloting 2. Learn and filter by your sizes. (International sizes) 3. Reverse search if you found a specific item that you like -> cheaper, different size 4. Search by date listed 5. Misspell search terms 6. Be a detective: Go to the original website - original description (reverse image search) 7. Find sellers who are your body type and follow them. (Search for sizes) 8. Be a texture (or material) nerd 9. Find a specific style that you like and than find more specific terms to describe it. 10. Aesthetics and famous people 11. Don't sell anything that was new for more than half of what you paid for it.
