You’re NOT as Strong as You Think! (THE TRUTH)

Are you strong or do you just think you’re strong? I’m not trying say anything offensive since you should know that the most important role of my channel I believe is to help my viewers. That said, in this video, I’m going to show you there is a very important difference that must be accounted for when developing strength and the failure to do so can lead to many breakdowns and physical issues down the road.

First it helps to define strength. Strength is the ability to generate force against an external load or resistance. This means that the more force you can produce against an external load, the stronger you are. While this is absolutely the case, there is no discrepancy made here about the type of strength we are talking about.
You see, there is your true strength and your compensatory strength. They often times go hand in hand and where true strength leaves off, compensatory strength takes over. What this means is, on any given lift, your ability to perform it with good form and free of compensation (meaning that you are directing the force that you generate through the exact muscles you are trying to train and to the object you are trying to move) is paramount and reflective of your true strength. Should you recruit unwanted muscle action or make alterations in joint mechanics that while helping you to perform the lift also compromise the health and integrity of your body during the lift, then you have tapped into your compensatory strength.
Now, I’m not talking about the egregious examples of bad form. Those are obvious to anyone watching them and can be easily coached out in a few sets. I’m talking about the subtle compensations that occur sometimes within a joint, that are not very visible to an untrained bystander and sometimes to even the person performing the lift. Continue to either load these movements even more or rack up more and more reps with these compensations present and you are going to put yourself at risk for eventual breakdown from the accumulated damage these high load reps perform.
The importance of heavy lifting cannot be understated. After all, lifting heavy weights is one of the truest ways of developing strength. Progressively overloading the bar provides an objective way for you to increase your strength and get bigger over time. The thing that you need to question however is the timing of the increases. The goal should not be to push as hard as you can as fast as you can. Instead, building the base foundation should be something that takes place first (free of subtle compensation) before pursuing weight increases as the sole goal of each session.
Now, strength will increase over time (especially if you are new to lifting). You may see dramatic increases in strength in a short period because of a more efficient neuromuscular patterning being developed on each lift. These increases may well come without any change in body mechanics that lead to compensation and should therefore be encouraged and embraced. What I am saying is that if the increases come at the inclusion of compensations (biomechanical) then you need to reevaluate the importance of those in the first place and the repercussions of doing so.
The ATHLEAN-X Training System is a program designed for pro athletes that has been configured to accommodate all strength and ability levels. The principles of training like an athlete remain the same and the refusal to compromise on them is what has allowed the program to be so successful and helpful to those using it. To start using it yourself, head to athleanx.com and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System and start training like an athlete.

Hey Jeff, long time watcher from Niagara Falls Canada. I want to thank you for everything you do. I know you inspire so many people including myself. I have a question.... I tore my acl about 20 years ago. I didn't have it operated on for about 3 years after because of the waiting list. I've always struggled to strengthen that leg. I know I have arthritis and my hamstring will lock up if I push too hard but I need to know from you if there is hope. I'd like to try your 90 day program but I'm concerned i won't be able to with this leg problem... It's actually starting to cause lower back and hip pain despite all the things I try. Any suggestions?

@@seanclough5861 no its not that. It's just some as he said compensations in your form like doing an exercise like relying on one leg more when squatting because its stronger so you lift lets say 200 lbs that way but without that compensation you'd probably lift like 150 or less that's what he is referring to

Big props to Jesse... He's overcome some big obstacles, made great progress, and is a real inspiration to all of us. It just goes to show that we're all capable of making big changes to our own bodies with proper nutrition and training. Jeff, thanks for all you do to contribute to the fitness community. It's nice to know (with all the crap out there) that there is a place where I can come to gain real knowledge and the right way to do things. I've been paying special attention to your shoulder workouts lately as I've noticed some pain/impingement. There were a handful of things I was doing wrong that contributed to this and have since adopted some different exercises you recommended. Keep up the good work!

I don’t understand how you could dislike this video. Definitely one of your best most informative videos because it applies across the board to everyone. Im actually a 24 year old personal trainer and, no doubt, have so much to learn. I use your knowledge to help me and I sometimes see exactly what you’re talking about, with those small but dangerous compensatory strength movements, and I try my best to make the minor adjustments by training others with a “therapeutical” perspective if you will. But it’s videos like these that are the reason I’ve followed you for years and will continue to do so. Thank you Jeff, I will be referencing this video to many. To this day you are the one of the greatest inspirations that went into my decision to strive to become a physical therapist. Again I can’t thank you enough for the honest, encouraging, and powerful knowledge you provide to millions of people. God bless. P.S. keep up the good work Jesse!

Hi everybody, I'm an Alexander Technique teacher and lifter (unusual!) and what Jeff is talking about in Alexander terms is misuse of the body throughout movement. Just about everyone suffers from this and adding weight to a movement only accentuates this. Stress is fine but there is right and wrong stress, and it is very difficult to change this when you have no clue as to what is good or bad. I have taught many people who are hurt through not understanding movement first, so we use no weight at all, just learning how to move for each exercise in a better way. It's all about thinking and this really is ultimate mind - muscle connecting. Thank you Jeff for your work and all the free content you put out - a voice of experience and reason!

Totally agree. Although it seems weird after watching older videos where you've said most people will be stronger than they think (the videos on the focus of hitting failure/time under tension rather than a number of reps). While both those things aren't always going to apply to the same person, it's going to be hard for people to figure out their true strength when they also keep getting told they're stronger than they think.

James Smith The whole point of the video has gone over at least 1/2 of the commenters’ heads. It is not what looks like strength, but rather what is strength. For instance in my case, form is mostly on point for squats. However, I had an issue a couple of days ago when I squatted down with a weight that was hard for me to lift, and on the way up my femoral head shifted and pinched my sciatic nerve. Now I have to strengthen my muscles that prevent this movement and then it’s back to the drawing board. If one tries to lift heavy on an unstable surface (my hip joint as the example in this comment), they will more than likely F themselves up, rather than bulk themselves up.

Then I found Jeff and I have learned a lot of magnificent tips, fact's and training methods, that confirmed what I learned about myself, and teached me a lot more. Thank you jeeff

Would love to train one day in your gym. I have an uneven hip causing one of my legs to be slightly longer than the other, making one of my shoulders slightly higher than the other. This again has made my overall posture bad causing by back to have a bit more curve. Because of this condition I have been avoiding bars in my training with the exception of the dumbells. I have mostly trained with cables, doing different types of sit-ups and push-ups, training legs and glutes. After training for about a year I finally started with squats and bicep curls, after my back had gotten stronger and more support. Before training I was 236 lbs, Now I am 196 lbs, and I feel more secure doing the "common" (What you see others do) lifts in the gym. I might make a video about it, as I assume there are more people with my physical condition out there. Love your vids, thanks for many good tips.

All this ties in with my left to right side muscle imbalances I have. I think through a combination of compensatory strength gains and injury I have a lot of some issues I need to address. As a competing natural bodybuilder I am forced to address these issues aesthetically, but most importantly protecting my lifting career and health for long term. I have 15 years of lifting to correct. Great content Jeff, the best of KZfaq by far ! Thank you.

Great stuff, Jeff. Team Athlean member here. I had been thinking that when demonstrating the compound lifts it would be helpful to list the muscles that should be involved and at what percent of the load each should be taking... and more importantly, which muscles should NOT be involved. I think it would really help beginners, and some who think they are advanced, check themselves before they wreck themselves.

Strongman movements will wreck you. I'm not shitting on them, strongman is some badass feats of strength shit, but people wanting to be "fit" need to be really careful with those movements and make sure they are ready to perform them. Like the atlas stone... there is no way to do that without lousy deadlift form. You train for strongman. You don't do strongman as training (in a general sense).

Thank you jeff, Recently i started training again after a long term off due to personal problems to where i got it in my head that i just couldn't do it anymore or i wasn't good enough, But then i took a good hard look in the mirror and asked myself Why not? I began making dietary changes immediately and started feeling way more positive after that, Shortly after i began watching sheamus with his brave change celtic warrior workouts, Which then brought me here! I watched one video and just the way you explained things instantly captivated me and i knew you would be able to help me so began studying your videos paying attention to everything you said and realising a lot of little errors i was making that ultimately made one huge error (No Growth/or slow growth), Now after watching lots of what you teach i basically scrapped everything i know and rebuilt the way i train from scratch! Starting with form and building a base to work from then almost instantly a massive difference began to show! To point i had the PT at my gym come over and train with me and my girlfriend he was shocked and he had to ask what was we doing different? I just answered simply "i went home and did my home work" I am still building and strengthening my base every day lifting lighter then what i used to but with proper form and believe me you can feel the difference the next morning... Haha this one guy always comes to the gym i'd say 90% of the time to dick around with his mates and they go out of their way to pick at others lifting lighter at the gym, But last night i sat their and watched the big bullfrog for the first time and he is your typical ego lifter gets in there with a super obnoxious ego and being really loud while lifting or doing anything for that matter.. But after watching him i noticed he goes for the heaviest weights he can move and he swings them.. 😐 He doesn't lift the weights he quite literally swings them 😂 safe to say he doesn't like to be laughed at haha. Thank you so much jeff for making such amazing content i'm glad i found it so i Don't end up like *THAT GUY* the amount of changes i have had to make are not easy but worth every extra second i am spending doing them, I am currently 21 and thanks to everything i have learned i should be able to lift safely and see results for a very long time! Also thank you jessie! watching your transformation has been amazing so far and you have a good sense of humour keep killing it man!

Thanks for a great video Jeff. Watching it now in 2020, the Corona outbreak forced me to train at home with no barbells and made me realize just that: doing pistol squats I noticed how much stronger is my right leg is than left. Doing heavy single dumbell shoulder press made me realize how my right arm is stronger than left, going to use this time to address these issues.

I'm glad to hear this info as a newbie weight trainer. I started with essentially nothing during March 2018. I have sort of learned what I can do physically by forcing myself in the start with proper form. I have then realized to cintinue practicing on focusing my mind and muscle connection and drop the weight a bit until I can create the proper range of motion. then I will intigrate a heavier weight when the time is right. I have watched your PPF video also very informative. The science aspect is great to learn from and imput it into training.

I decided a while back to never squat or deadlift more than my own body weight. I just don’t think it’s worth the risk. I’ll do my best to perfect the proper movements/form and at the end of the day, does it really matter? If you’re squatting a bunch of weight with poor form that accomplished nothing. You’ll maintain good strength doing it right with less weight. I guess depends on your goals. I just want to be in solid shape. Every time I get too much into lifting I get burnt out. My best advice after ten years of training as a track athlete and now training for my job is to be consistent and not over do it. Punch in, and punch out and feel good and well rested going into every workout. The moment working out becomes a chore, you’ve taken it too far. Put the fun back into it. It should also be a great stress reliever not a stress inducer . Cheers fellas 🍺

@southsideshenanigans
@southsideshenanigans 6 жыл бұрын
+headband og no reason go for it. It just seems like then it never stops. Cuz then you’ll wanna go for double your body weight and more and more. and then it becomes just about the number. There are a lot of people that believe they have perfect form but they dont. They are compensating in so many areas kinda like what Jeff is saying in the video. I coach track at a high school. The weight room has become a sport of its own and it really shouldn’t. Guys are more concerned about the amount of weight they can throw around in the weight room than becoming a better overall athlete on the track or football field. And I can’t get behind that culture especially at the high school level.
