I was expecting some life haxxor but this is just basic common sense. Same with destroying ships to recover their craft components, hoofing it across some land, and rebuilding it on the other side instead of sailing around. You can 'pocket portal' ships too since iron nails don't prevent portal use.

@@Geeksmithing Its GREAT for single player but imagine this scenario in multiplayer......: Player 1 renames the base travelling portal to e.g. "Mountains" and off they go. Player 2 now renames the same base travelling portal to "Plains" and Player 1 is now stranded....using the 2 portal trick would be best if ALL players travel together to the same destinations at all times. ORRRRRR Irongate redesign them to cater for both scenarios

If I played alone I would have minimal portals, but as I play with a few others having a portal hub is much safer

I prefer to make a portal room. Renaming portals is beyond my Valheim ADHD patience threshold.

I use the two portal method. You have two portals at home, one named “home” or whatever you want mine is “villa” for example. The home portal name NEVER changes. So when i drop down a pocket portal i call it home then i go straight home, the second portal at my base is the one i use to rename the pocket portal to the appropriate title. Plains for example, then you go back through the home portal and switch the name of the pocket portal to the new “Plains”. The home portal will disconnect and be ready for next time and the second portal will be connected to the pocket portal.

And also: destroy your ship, pick up the materials and teleport your boat. This save you one trip

As a tip, I use some names for my exploration, for example if I'm exploring a mountain I use 'm1', 'm2', 'm3'... for plains 'p1', 'p2', etc, that way I can move to other locations without having to remember every name or having a portal hub

@@hmac4076 Not necessarily, just 1 on base where I change the name depending of the area, and I have the marks on the map to know where I left each portal, but I can be a problem if different players want to go to different places :P

The way i deal with portals is pretty much the same. Instead i don't put up all the signs in my base. I mark the target portal location on my map with the portal icon and name them the same as the text input only using lower case letters. That way you can pick the destination by just looking at the map.

Same. Especialy in early game, I just bring bunch of mats for portals and sail around to find interesting places. Most of the times I find nice stone tower on the edge of black forest next to other biomes and put one inside. I just use p# and mark location on map with portal name. Have 2 at home,one with fixed name the other one for travel. Sometimes I use the fact that portals are still connected if I want to change the name. I've built hub only once and ended up with this systems when there was bug with mob aggro and ground started shaking xD

I do this too, though after a while the map does get cluttered so it's hard to find the portal icons. I do have the names written down on paper with a brief (1-4 words) description of where it goes (northwest black forest, spawn, camp Alpha, copper mine, swamp crypt, etc.)

Nice to see I'm doing pocket portals correctly. I didn't even think about the single portal (no hubs) option. I have a HUGE hub and I just don't like how it looks of it. Would be nice to tear it down.

@@hmac4076 that sounds like when a serpent forced me to land on a midway island, right away a troll showed up to first swing its member at my head, then move on to kill the sea serpent.. with my boat between them. The bloody brute pushed my boat out just far enough that the nails went out of reach! I did get to watch a troll vs serpent match. Those opportunities don't come around very often.

Even this isn't right... Should be labeling your portals and names on the map. Then you can get back whenever you like. I keep 4 portals at the main house, and can change the labels as required, and maintain default names at the hub to get back home at any time. 4 just gives some flexibility, do however many you need. Minimum would be two I suppose. I haven't built a portal "hub" in some time.

this only works if your playing alone right, if others are on with you and you change the portal name then they cant get back. or am i missing something?

Nothing new here for seasoned player but invaluable for new players or those who tunnel vision, especially writing down your portal names. I have Portal hub (for the Main Spawn, merchant, my farms (coal, boars, wolves, Lux etc) and the bosses (as I've built houses near them)), but I have one portal for travelling around and three backup portals called "A", "B" and "C" so i can explore. As a general rule, I place a portal on each island but if its a big island I do it compass style (one in the middle and then one North, South, etc)

Not nitpicking but... Drop a portal at a new location, jump through to your base and get materials for a New portal. But then... Drop a new portal, and name it for the new location... then destroy your pocket portal to get the materials back. Why not just rename the pocket portal once you get there, and keep the materials you just got from base... as your next one? I know it's only a few seconds, but why add the extra step?

Sounds a little confusing if you make portal that have upper and lower case letters and your reading a sign thats all caps lol a portal hub would be huge and epic tho im building one at the altars so I can get the buffs when needed and then travel where I want

I like having a portal hub, so i built it right next to the main spawn point. I also placed my cartography table in the portal hub so it can be updated and read easily.

I'd rather have 10 portals in my base instead of renaming one every time I want to use it. Just my personal take. However I never thought about just leaving a blank name portal for a quick pocket portal escape. Good idea.

I'd say you can still have dedicated portals for places you go frequently, but for less common ones, you can save space by using one portal.

Having the dedicated 10+ portals at your base is multiplayer friendly meaning any player can go anyplace, anytime without the fear of the temporary base portal being renamed by another player.....

OR... Just build a portal everywhere you go to farm and at all your bases. And create a transfer server for all the materials that you aren't allowed to take with you through a portal.

I only wish the crafting table symbol were right next to the portal symbol in the build menu. Remember to set up your exploration endpoint in your base. I was running out on a side quest last night, pocket portal in the bag, while the ""-connection was already active for my main exploration mission. So, it was the long way home for me. Pocket portal needs it's counterpart prepared back home. So a little hub will be needed, if you want to operate more than one lifeline

This is a good tip for using less resources but most people like to have separate portals. Just saves time rather than remembering names and re-naming all the time.

@@causerDAguv this is great idea if your a solo player , but when you have 5-6 people you can teleport to a location and someone change the base portal now your stuck and I can guarantee someone will change it when your half way around the world

I have an alt to set the base portals as needed. Yes, a portal at the starting point is wise, especially when losing one's bed when the ground is shaking.

On my mostly solo world I deliberately did not put up a center portal. And world center is on a small island, my home base on another island. Visitors get deluxe pickup service by longship with driver. There's also no cartography table anywhere.

Other useful tips for exploration. Wear a root harnesk when sailing in new areas just in case you sail past plains and encounter deathsquittos. Keep a few poison resistance potions on you when sailing

@@maxthall Purely preventative/defensive measures. Harnesk has a very high resistance to pierce damage, which prevents deathsquittos from one-shotting you as you're sailing past the plains. The poison resistance is handy when sailing past draugr bowmen in the swamps because their bows do poison damage and pierce damage. Taken together with the harnesk the bowmen can' do much to you either. Other than these two threats, serpents are the only dangerous critter you'll really encounter when sailing.

I've always done this, I thought everyone did. I have my exploration portal that's just my own name (on a server we can't all use the blank portal), and the other permanent portals I've dropped are named after cities in Sweden or Norway. I have a list of names written down so I'm never stuck for one to use.

YUP - pocket portals are where it's at. Or, at least, get to a new area that you might like to explore, set up a wee bitty something (some of the ruins are useful) with a portal in it, and there you go.

you should have talk about how to move metal from ware you get it from and able to move it to your main base make a secound world and build a secound base there so now when you are in the swamp getting iron or any other place all you need to do is log out of your main world and reload in to your secound world drop off all the metal and go back ware you left off at in your main world and keep mining all the metals there when you are done dump all that metal in your secound world. then go back to your main world and telaport back to your base standing ware you are going to store all that metal then reload in the secound world now all you need to do load up all the metal you can place in your back pack in all open spaces and reload back into your mian world at your base there. just make sure ware you log in and out at is the place you want to be at when you reload abck in to which evey world you load back into so you do not even need to move at all. i know this may be time consuming but its the easyest way to get all your metal back to your mian base so that you can make what every you need to. i have one world for mining iron ore and one world for chopping trees like for fine wood ore even core wood this way i only need to cut down tree around my base that i need to cut down so my base still have trees around it and not a open field to look at there is a cleard area with no tree so i have a line of sight to kill with when my base gets attacked.

oh ya on my secound world i live some back up armor and wepons with some food just in case i get killed on my mian world i can log out get my armor and wepons and go back to get my stuff with out being naked that never ends well being naked and trying to get your stuff only to get killed again. this lead into one more thing when you get killed as soon as you respawn back at your spawn point open the world map look for the mark ware you hade died and remark it just type like dead this way if you do die a secound time you know with the remark you plae on the map show you ware you die at for when you die a secound time you will lose the first mark that it shows you on the map ware you died at will be gone a new one will show up waare you died the secound time now the first time. so all ways mark the first spot ware you died at so you know ware to go or you will lose the spot and have a longer time finding your death totem.

You forgot to tip people in on how to mob-proof your away portals. Like placing them on a platform or in a covered building (like some like). I haven't seen it but apparently if you just drop a portal ib grass and nothing else, there is a chance a straggler mob may just walk by and attack/destroy it. Ruining your day.

I use this pocket portal method all the time, but in addition, i always have an extra unconnected portal at my base called "sos". It happens that i forget to unconnect my pocket portal, or cant remember what i named it. It also happens that when i rename portals, i go through to quick, and get stuck on the other side with a lost connection. But i can always connect to "sos" and get back home.

Im using a mod atm that allows me to connect any portal to one another via a drop down menu. But when H&H comes i plan on uninstalling all my mods, and give the new content a proper go, and i just know im gonna screw up with the portals now, after getting used to the mods :D So i had better keep all this in mind. love your videos btw, just found your channel yesterday. Subscribed.

@@hmac4076 That sounds really fun and challenging. Especially if terraforming is not allowed, or at least limited somehow. I build small island bases in debugmode all the time. Sometimes from small existing islands, but usually i create them myself via terraforming. You can make pretty big islands without it messing with your fps, as long as you are far out to sea, so the game doesnt have to render in the landscape around you - one of the main reasons i build on islands (plus its event/raid proof so no defense needed). I would love to see you and Versaughs approach to building a genuine vanilla water-base.

I tried to watch your video..but unfortunately a bit to much editing..and seems you enjoy talking..and online for Xbox is completely crap..there is so much lag you can hardly run without it freezing up..solo is best on Xbox ATM..
