I think the biggest factor in favor of the M3 MacBook is that you're virtually guaranteed to get a few extra years of OS updates and general longevity out of the device. Considering who usually buys these, having a few more years of not feeling like your device is outdated is worth the price premium.

It's silly to suggest anything on how the new MBA in base configuration will fare in 5-10years based on an anecdote. Websites and applications are getting larger and larger, as the average pc improves so do the applications running on that hardware. This has nothing to do with techies but rather with common sense. I’m debating between a MBA or a MBP (either with 16/512) It would be for personal use and my job… a bit of gaming (mostly retro stuff), some scripting, some VSCode dev work, a lot of zoom/teams, and a lot of remoting into servers via terminal or Remote Desktop apps. I want to use two monitors but I hear the dual monitor with the lid closed on the MBA is causing serious performance drop I would likely try to sell my m1 iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and pencil to get one. I don’t use it as often as I expected to

Dan, one BIG question from me: With light laptops I have the problem that the base part of the laptop doesn't weight enough compared to the monitor part, so it easily "tips over" when using it on the knees. Does the MBA address this problem this time? ... Or should I just go MBP? Currently using a 15 inch 1.7 kg Lenovo X1 Extreme for 4k video editing etc on the go but want an M3 soon to replace it (OS, np, IT pro etc) and even the 1.7kg can tip easily.

I really like MacBook Air, I think the concept of a laptop is that it should be portable. Im currently using an iMac but for for my current work the company is giving me an M3 Air 24GB of ram and 1TB disk. workflow: we use and web base tool for design as well as photoshop so im currently having like 9 ps files open mostly under 100mb some times can get to 500mb per file. and have like 16 chrome tab (because safari doesn't work as well for the company tools that are mostly chrome-windows base) also use media encoder an some illustrator brevely. my current Mac is a 27 inch iMac late 2015 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 16gb of ram and 1tb hard drive. so it will be a big step up.

I purchased my M2 15-inch Air base model for $999 from Best Buy, just before the announcement of the M3 models. As a casual user who doesn't engage in heavy tasks on my personal laptop, I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase. The machine is stunning and a joy to use for any purpose, with its beautiful 15-inch screen providing an excellent viewing experience. As mentioned in this video, for average users like myself, the difference between the M2 and M3 models isn't significant unless specific M3 features are required, such as dual monitor support or ray tracing for gaming-features most users won't need. It's remarkable that the current landscape allows for such powerful M chips, to the extent that reviewers now not only recommend the latest model but also its predecessors. We're living in a time where technological advancements continue to impress.

It's what I did and it went against the grain initially. I have a pile of old MacBook Pros now going for recycling and in their place sits this 13" Air with just 8Gb of RAM and 256Gb of storage. I used an SSD from an old Mac for backup and I will buy a Samsung T9 to run apps and anything that needs fast access. Way back in 2011 I found I was spending nearly £2000 for upgraded MacBook Pros but this new M3 Air is streets ahead not least of all in design. I went for the Starlight option and it is truly a thing of beauty. All my concerns have evaporated, particularly stepping down from 15 to 13 in screen size and the aforementioned base spec. At around £1000 in the UK I think this was a relative bargain - almost half what I was paying out in 2011.

Lightroom Classic (sometimes along with Photoshop) 3. A browser (2 different ones like Brave and Firefox sometimes), 4. Apple Music, 5. Windows file explorer (4 to 5 tabs), 6. A communication app (like Slack or Teams) and 7. Notion. @@macrumors Unpopular opinion as someone who ran an 11" Core i7 on the max 8GB of memory with a large external display and over a dozen USB/Thunderbolt devices for nearly 5 years - running multiple businesses on it [2 different accounts to login to to keep things separated] - 8GB was enough except for when both users had Safari open and 100s of tabs open - then it felt sluggish. M3 MacBook Air is much more future-proofed thanks to adding Wi-Fi 6E and an AV1 hardware decoder, both of which are already useful and will only continue to grow in importance as 5 GHz congestion keeps getting worse and video streaming services transcode more of their catalogs to AV1 - KZfaq, for example, is already switching to AV1-only for the 4K versions of some videos, so a computer that can’t decode AV1 would be stuck at lower resolutions. Therefore I would only recommend an older MacBook Air for someone who is certain that they won’t ever use it for: a. Streaming more than the occasional short video b. Things where Wi-Fi hiccups would bother them, such as Zoom/Meet calls, wireless transfer of large files, etc. (Unless, of course, they are able and willing to use Ethernet instead - but most people aren’t.)

I still use my 2016 MacBook. It’s a Chromebook and the processor is at 85% all the time 😅 but it’s the tiniest machine I can find with a high resolution. Apple please please please please put out a new 12 inch MacBook

Probably true but when they got this MacBook at the time they got a good deal and knew the longevity would be there. Which it clearly has been

Why is everyone still missing the point??? It is not about whether we can live with the base 8/256 specs or whether there is a need a not. THat is not the point!! The point is for what Apple charges for these machines in 2024, it should come with 16/512 as minimum in 2024!! At such prices especially in 2024, why should I have to compromise?? Worse, why are KZfaqrs becoming apologists for Apple's nickel-diming ways??

Not only that, but having 8GB of RAM in an expensive laptop in 2024 means it won't last as long with future OS and software updates. And since it can't be upgraded later it means more e-waste sooner than it needs to be, making it a really not eco-friendly decision on the part of Apple.

I think the main point here is that 8GB of RAM for an Apple silicon machine feels like triple the amount because of how well optimized the SoC and the software are. I know it sounds crazy but people can use 8GB of ram and not have issues

This is such a stupid comment. Apple is selling a product. Either buy it or don't. Nobody is demanding you buy it. If they offered more RAM and storage, they would simply increase their prices. You ALREADY have that option now. What you're really doing is demanding Apple raise their prices and remove the option to buy discounted models with lower specs.

@@macrumors You can optimize the CPU, GPU, OS and whatever else you want, but data is still data. Documents, audio files, images and videos don't magically become smaller because they're stored in Apple's devices.

Well.... My personal opinion is that Apple should stop selling 256GB rubbish and 8GB Ram. My biggest concern is that the users buying these products will exhaust their SSDs fast when peaking at 8GB all the time. Why don't they just introduce a latch where you could put in an extra M2 storage drive? Don't get me wrong, I'm superhappy with my M1 Pro MBP with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, but I had to rob a bank to get it.

If anyone is thinking they need more than 8gb of ram and more than 256 of storage they ABSOLUTELY don't need the MB Air, if they think they need the M3 MB Air they DON'T need the MB Air, they have to go with any of the M series macbook pros, if they want to have more ram and storage in the MB Air then go for it but they don't "need" it
