I suspect most buyers at the low end of Apple models are upgrading every 5-10 years, not year over year.

I have an iPad Pro from 2021 I use for uni, but I am now in need for a computer. I wanted to get the M3 just because getting a newer chip just feels like the smarter choice in the long run since it will be my first macbook, right? Haha

It's a nice bump. I've been waiting for this update, the M3 MBA 15" will probably soon replace the 2015 15" MBP hand-be-down that my partner has been using (with the fans spinning up far too often). Though we will wait to see what happens to the iPad Pro as that is an option as well.

I was hoping we might see 120hz on the M3 Airs, as an M2 Air owner that would have convinced me to upgrade but without that the other upgrades seem fairly modest. Not too upset though, I'm content to live with my M2 for a couple more years. I'll save the money for the rumoured new iPad Pro, which might finally get rid of the inner shadow on the borders if they switch to OLED.

The Intel MBA is the last one with Intel CPU. How many years does that goes back? Is it the 2018 Model? Since 2018 all CPU have a huge performance increase. The Apple Silicon is good in low power consumption. I am working with both, Win11 and MacOS. The MacOS misses a lot features compared to windows. I like Apple but I am simply not getting used to the operating system.

If you ignore the 8GB models, go straight to the 16GB, and then look at the comparable Windows laptops, you will see that the prices are similar; maybe Apple is slightly more expensive in that "premium" sector, including the XPS and Galaxy Book4 Pro. So, if Apple were to release a base 16GB version, it would be the price now if you configure or buy it off the shelf. I then ask myself why YT creators are complaining. Apple offers a cheaper entry point than the XPS or Galaxy. Why would you want to deprive people with less disposable income of a chance of buying a Mac at a lower price, $1100 for the M3? I fail to understand the logic and thinking! By the way, there is no chance Apple would have a base of 16GB and keep it at $1100, as it would be destructive to the Pro line and have little effect on demand. 1. Most people outside the techie world do not care about RAM and 2. Windows has a monopoly, and whatever Apple does, they have little hope of breaking the 10% market share. Just my two cents worth, coming from an economics POV. What Apple is doing is an excellent business model for them and consumers alike. But remember, Apple is and has always been premium, so for those expecting cheap, that will never happen!

Best buy had the 15 with 16gb 1TB SSD for 1499 last week, had to travel to actually get one on pick up buy it was worth it. The M3 is 1899 for a similar spec. CRAZY! I dont think the upgrades are enough to justify spending close to 2k! If you are a non pro user it doesnt move the needle.

The one thing you didn't mention regarding upgrading from an M1 13" MacBook Air is the Camera which is only 720p on the M1 versus 1080p on the M2 and M3. And of course, the M1 only has the 13" model and the M2 and M3 offer the new 15" model.

It all depends on how well Path of Exile 2 will run on different MBAs.

Battery life is perhaps not as simple as it appears. Apple's stated battery life specs are for light loads, and in those cases M2 & M3 are very similar. For heavier workloads the M3 is actually much more efficient than M2, so you could get significantly more battery life in real world scenarios. Oh, and I hear they've tried to reduce the fingerprint issue with midnight colour...

Hi, it's quite amazing that the 15inch macbook air m3 with 16gb of ram is the same price as the 14 inch m3 macbook pro with only 8gb. Sure the screen may be better, there's an hdmi and sd card reader but I don't see any reason to go for that rather than the air. The 13inch is even £200 cheaper so for that a few dongles isn't too bad.

I have an M1 MacPro Book (second hand with 2 battery charges with 16GB and a 512 SSD). 20% of retail price so I was extremely lucky with finding someone from corporate selling theirs. I won’t buy another Apple laptop brand new as long as the standard RAM is 8GB with a 256 SSD. Happy to buy secondhand until then as this machine will last a long time.

My wife uses a 2018 base mini with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB SSD. And she is perfectly happy with it. I suspect that there are far more Apple customers like her than there are like me getting at least 32 GB of RAM on my last 3 Macs.

Simple way (for me, anyway!) as a satisfied M1 Air owner to avoid M3 Air envy, inevitably wrought by Apple’s devilish marketing. As an Air owner, you likely don’t envy a Pro; you see it as simply a different class of machine, for a different purpose. Well, think of the M3 Air as, relative to the M1 Air, like a Pro now-a different class of machine (doing complex AI and so forth). That way, you (or rather I!) can live serenely with your perfectly fine M1 Air.

Just to react on your title. And then translate "you" to me, I say No. But that is because I have an outspect M1 Macbook Air and it it still doing what I want to do. But that is exactly what I need.

Apple need to utilise Titanium in their top of the range stuff the pro phones look so much more premium fabricated out of this wondrous metal.

I think at this point, its safe to say we'll be getting about 25% - 30% better performance with each generation or 18 months.

until it makes monetary sense to go 16/512 gb i am not going to upgrade my m1 unless i get more ram and storage for a good price my limitation is not the m1 processor it's the ram and storage

The biggest change for me is the fact there's now a standard config with 16/512. This means places like Amazon, eBuyer etc... are likely to sell them at a discount. I see no reason why it wouldn't be a great first Apple Silicon system. I currently use a 12-core 3.46GHz 2012 Mac Pro and a 2.6GHz i7 Mac Mini Server for less demanding tasks and to save money on the vast power draw of the Mac Pro. (Costs about £1.50 through EON Energy if I leave the Mac Pro on for 24 hours). I've already planned ahead for moving to Apple Silicon by getting a 10GBit USB-C NVMe/M2 SATA enclosure with built-in SDcard and MicroSD Card readers and 2 USB-A ports which comes in handy for my iLok and keeping Pro Tools sessions and Reason song files on. I'm completely sold on getting the 13" with 16/512 and the 10 GPU cores once I can afford to.

It's amusing that all the KZfaq reviewers are getting the point of the M3 wrong, and that's also depressing. An M3 is an M2 + 20% speedup + Apple's all new Blender developed 3D graphics hardware. Can you compare the number of graphics cores? Absolutely not, they aren't the same at all. So, let's try some of the new games written for the M3 and give them a try. It's like getting a new PC with an NVIDIA card then comparing CPU speeds. You'd be a laughing stock, just the same as on the Macs.
