Here I want to tell the story of the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Joseph Bologne, partially because it's a story that's almost completely unheard of even in high-level music history courses, but also partially because I want to make an example of how "selective" the pen of history can be and of how much it can bias historical account.
I urge anyone in music to look more deeply first in to Bologne's music, to perform it more and give it the honest chance that it more than deserves. Furthermore, I would urge anyone and everyone to more carefully interrogate what how we learn and how we teach, to look for the discrepancies and ask why they are there, and to not take any answers you might receive at face value.

@@MsAppassionata maybe if the movie's a big enough hit we'll get this miniseries in a little bit - wouldn't be the first time we got one biopic shortly following another of the same person. Plus having Dumas in it would give it a bit of variety. I know it's unlikely they'll mention Dumas in the movie but there's still a chance I guess.

Yes, I am wishing Ava Duvernay would do a spin-off of Queen Charlotte 2 with Joseph Bologne. The Prince of Wales, son of King George III Queen Charlotte (an avid fencing fan who becomes King George IV) is responsible for the main portrait we see online (with Joseph holding a fencing sabre with sheet music and violin in the back). Let Queen Charlotte reminisce back one day about her son and his friends and when Joseph Bologne was in London and surrounding areas. The series would delve into Bologne's military career and working with another Black military officer Thomas Alexandre Dumas (father of Alexandre Dumas, the author of the Three Musketeers, The Count of Monte Cristo and more). Wow!

This is the most accurate and honest depiction of Joseph Boulogne and his achievements, eradicated by racism, I have seen yet. Thank you so much for that. The only thing I will say is that it is not the quantity of work, but quality of work and its impact on the world by influence on those works that follow that makes one great. Jimi Hendrix revered for this very reason with only a few albums made me. Thanks once again.

Thank you so much ... I first leant about the Chevalier 30 yrs ago from scarce sources (J.A. Rogers) - I think you paid him a wonderful homage - what makes me sad, as an Afropean is -that a lot of Black Europeans simply do not care about those before us who contributed so much to European culture ... no matter what obstacles stood in their way ... which is inspiring for everybody who has to fight harder to get his/her talents be acknowledged

When I played classical music in my elementary, middle, and high school courses parents were calling me or visiting the classroom to compliment me because their children and youth were going home to tell them that they live classical jazz. I tried this with my college students. They lived it too. So, classical music is played whenever I’m teaching. Very softly. Very subtly. It helps students to be calm and they finish their assignments. There should be listening corners where students can go, to relax, and enjoy music from many genres. Watch the academic scores go up! Watch diversity in the classroom blossom! Parents will be contacting teachers with compliments, and not complaints. Bring the arts back! Thanks.

One of the worst things done to education in the U.S. is the focus on STEM. Music and the Art programs were gutted (but not sports) thinking that this was the best way forward. Americans have a long history of being suspicious of anything that did not make money, finding that anything that failed to do so was worthless and without merit. And so many many children who would otherwise find purpose and meaning in music and the arts, found failure in STEM and were unable to fulfill their natural inclinations and proclivities.

Music and art education were a standard part of education until recently. They were both seen as a necessary part of education. What's really hurt them in schools is the ongoing defunding of public education. There are states now that only offer a 4-day school week and others that pay teachers only $30K a year.

It’s about time. The music from the Afro-Caribbean and Latin American diaspora is under promoted. This movie, “Chevalier,” should be shown in as many theatres as possible. The story of Joseph Bologne should be taught in schools. Bring music and the arts back to pour public schools. Let all students have the opportunities to engage in these pursuits. Only then will the best and the brightest emerge from the masses. Countries thrive when the best and brightest stars rise to the stop. The issues surrounding legacy students and their legacy wealth means that poor, talented and gifted students often have to scramble for the “scraps from the table of joy,” instead of being assessed on their competencies. Hopefully, as news of Joseph Bologne spread more people will be inspired to help children and youth gain recognition. One can only hope.

I am not at all surprised by the information in this video. How can anything be much more violently oppressive than to relegate to shadows and footnotes an obviously radiant genius and a seemingly overachiever at that. This certainly substantiates the preeminence of black musical talent, except racism is a preeminently evil beast. So very happy to learn about Joseph Bologne; especially to know that black folk have very long been at the forefront of most all artistic and intellectual advances and beatific expressions. In fact when Schyler Chapin American manager of the Metropolitan Opera during the seventies in New York sought to engage my first teacher and another black male singer as principle artists at the MET, his contract which was up for renewal was not renewed and those debuts never happened. Bologne led Europe's first all black regiment, with black troops and officers, the Legion De St Georges aka American Legion aka Black Legion. His second in command at the Legion De St Georges, Thomas Alexandre Dumas, is another remarkable black character. Born in what became Haiti to a slave woman and her aristocrat owner, he was educated at fine schools in France, joined the army as a private, rose to General - in - Chief commanding 50,000 troops in the Army of the Alps, then commanding the infantry during Napoleon's Egyptian Expedition. His son, Alexandre Dumas, wrote The Three Musketeers and The Count Of Monte Cristo. There was a monument to him in Paris but the Nazis destroyed it when they rolled in. Danny Glover was trying for more than a decade to make a movie about him.

THIS IS THE ORIGNAL MEANING OF THAT WORD, THAT THEN PASSED INTO ENGLISH. IT ALSO MEANS QUITE LIVELY, EXACTLY AS THE ITALIAN WORD ALLEGRO ALSO USED IN MUSIC. THE GALLANT STYLE WOULD THEN BE A VERY ALLURING, SEDUCTIVE AND PLEASING TO THE EAR, GENERALLY SPEAKING! WE ALSO SAY ''ENLEVÉ'' IN FRENCH. NOW, I AM NOT A MUSICIAN AND OF COURSE YOUR DEFINITION OF GALLANT REMAINS THE RIGHT ONE! I JUST WANTED TO EMPHASIZE WHERE THAT WORD CAME FROM AND WHY! AND HERE FOR THOSE WHO KNOW FRENCH ENOUGH TO UNDERSTAND WHAT GALLANT, ACTUALLY WRITTEN GALANT, WITH ONLY ONE L IN FRENCH, ORIwww.cnrtl.fr/etymologie/galantGINALLY AND WHO WOULD BE INTERESED IN KNOWING MORE ABOUT WHAT THAT MEANT AND STILL MEANS SINCE WE STILL SAY IN MODERN FRENCH...ÊTRE GALANT...AS WHEN A TRUE GENTLEMAN ALWAYS HAS THIS ''LADIES FIRTST''' ATTITUDE WITH THEM! AS FOR RACISM TODAY TOWARDS BLACK PERFORMERS IN MUSIC, IT IS ALSO PERFECTLY TRUE AND ONE ONLY HAS TO KNOW THE BIOGRAPHY OF NINA SIMONE TO KNOW HOW MUCH SHE SUFFERED FROM SUCH RACISM IN WHITE AMERICAN SOCIETY AND UNFORTUNATELY RACISM IS STILL VERY MUCH A FACT OF LIFE IN MODERN SOCIETY EVERYWHERE IN WHITE SOCIETY. IT STILL REMAINS A MAIN HURDLE FOR ALL BLACK PEOPLE EVERYWHERE WHERE WHITES ARE THE MAJORITY! I AM WHITE MYSELF, SO I KNOW BECAUSE I KNOW MY OWN RACE AND OUR TERRIBLE PREJUDICES...VERY, VERY SAD!

Perhaps the main culprit as to why Boulogne's music was lost is Napolean. However, as the music industry and academia pride themselves in being such scholars of music history and research, why none of them came across Boulogne is disappointing. Western classical music already has a bad rap of being very racist (the people, not the music). Has it not struck anyone as odd that we went to music school in college and learned only about the music of dead, white male Europeans? White female composers were not even mentioned. I remember a brief mention of Clara Schumann but no other women. It is only fitting that we examine Boulogne more closely as well as any others who may have been swept under the carpet. As for Mozart, there is no desire to take anything from his legacy. The only thing to take are the fallacies purported by academia. The music industry has dubbed certain motifs and musical passages as "Mozartian". But it has become clear some of the motifs and phrases were first penned by Boulogne which Mozart "used". Shall we now use the term "Boulognian"? Not just Boulogne's symphonie concertante in E major where Mozart pirated passages, it seems very possible Mozart was also "inspired" by one of Boulogne's string quartets (from 1771) when writing his Exultate Jubilate in 1773. How many more of Boulogne's works or any other composer's works has Mozart copied?

Please, Bologne's music is average at best and for your knowledge Mozart perfected and ended the Classical style.

@@waundellsaavedra3772 Mozart quoted like every other composer of the time; Bach, Haydn and Beethoven. Whatever Mozart quoted he then turned around and composed the benchmark for that particular style or instrument.

His life is extremely interesting and I enjoy his music. It should be said, though, that Gossec, Vanhal, Salieri, Rosetti etc. are also largely forgotten today. The big orchestras are also mostly giving up on Haydn even. So I think this goes beyond whitewashing.

But, HEY, history is "HIS"-story; and why would you expect anyone to devote any money to telling the story of one they can never identify with - let alone cast him as a hero!

Black is a denotation which changes according to context. In the Chevalier's context, it was a denotation of social caste. What do you mean by black?
