In this video, I use our Tadano 180g-5 to tandem pick bridge girders with a Liebherr. I had to set the crane up on a crane pad that was built in the riverbed. This project took place over the course of three days. It was not without its difficulties. We had inclement weather, bad terrain, broken bridge girders, and stuck trucks to deal with. However, we made the best of it and got the job done.

No what's worse is getting to a site and foreman goes, jump in we are going for a drive. Then when traveling into the destination. He goes can you make this turn and think you can pull this grade? Uh no. Need to need to widen the turn and nope need a prime mover or big loader crawler to pull me up the grade. Grossing 259k and 130 long on a multi axle unit. Fun times at wind sites.. As an ex crane-operator its always fun to look at your videos, i miss the job but not the hours😃, i saw the video that you talked about "more tradespeople" and we have the same problem here in Sweden. I work as an instructor on a high-school for excavator and loader-operators and we are slowly seeing that the status of this trades are rising, another fun fact is that we this year have 12 applicants that are girls(of 32). Thanks for that and for keeping thin old guy entertained and as they say Been There Done That. But always good to see again so thanks again for putting it up. I started in construction at the age of 16 back in 1960, my father was a General Forman (Superintendent) for a large UK construction company. His idea for me to follow in his footsteps was to take a turn in all the different departments, on a major tunneling project. So I made my way through the carpenters , electricians, and mechanical shops. Then equipment operation. They had a rubber tired 5ton Neal's yard crane, 22RB crawler crane either fitted with a crane hook or drag line shovel, now these were lever operated foot braked hoist and drag. Slew was free with a pawl lock, great fun to load muck away trucks and not knock the cabs off. The tunnel service shafts had Taylor Hubbard dock cranes with speed winding hoist drums can't remember Ft per Sec but they were fast. We dropped precast tunnel lining segments and bagged cement down the tunnels, to keep two Tunnel Boring Machines fed at an advance rate of 13++ yards in 8 hrs. So it was busy, I only drove those cranes when the TBM I drove was stopped for some reason. Between tunnel jobs I went crane driving for other companies, Drove a prototype tower crane based on the track bed of a 22RB ( Ruston Bucyrus is the UK company of Bucyrus US) We building precast wall and slab apartment buildings, bonus was payed on number of units placed, 5 man gang including me, I operated the crane via an umbilical cord and control box, so when the guys were attaching props I would run out mortar beds for the next unit to save time. To work in radius we could reach 4 bay section, but I found I could get 5 by floating out the furthest wall unit to the end of the jib, once landed that was it the overload unit would not let me lift again. Our gang was the top bonus earning gang on site and the other could not find out how e did it. I also drove lorry mounted crane Allen Grove again a UK/US crane with foot brake hoist and drag ropes. up to 10 ton it was single operators, over 10 ton it was crane driver and truck driver, slinger, banksman. Over 20 ton lift cranes had an engineer go out and check the lift pad area, trouble was the young guy starter who were still getting experience had no or very little help out on site. This did change when the company had a very serious Near Miss accident, after that all cranes were double crewed and site assayed by an engineer sales rep. Back in tunneling I know joined a consultancy company as a Senior Inspector of Works and worked around the world on some of the largest construction projects, spending 4/5 years on each. A great life!!! You spoke about safety and I did find it a shock how Gun Ho the us contractors were. Did a tunnel under the St Clair River, Ontario to Michigan, in the pre construction start up safety meeting we had the US & Canadian Gov safety officers and their rule books. The US rules were way lower than the Canadian, a simple one was width of walkway in the tunnel the US was 9" one board, the Canadian was 3 boards width. We standardized every rule with the greater and that meant only one US rule. Sorry my life story took so long, but I'm bored sat here in lock down. Stay safe you guys in all ways.

I’m glad you guys were able to get the the new beams secure and everything. During this quarantine I finally got to see a huge crane operate in person. Because our next-door neighbor had to have a huge cypress cut down on their property, but their standard cherry picker could not reach where the tree was from the street so they had to bring in a big one. I wanted to get some videos of it for you, but my mom was working and because of where it was I couldn’t get a great angle from my porch where I was watching it. I did get some excellent audio though. It made a pretty excellent recording because there was a chipper, A bobcat skid steer, and a Morbark SG 12 stump grinder along with that huge crane truck. The chipper I think was a Morbark beaver 13 with a cat engine.

There was a local bridge on HWY 12 that took much longer than it was supposed to. The plans were wrong. The concrete beams were too long and had to be remade. It was either that or remake the abutments. If they had used steel beams it would have been quick and easy to cut them shorter. To err is human, but to really screw up, it takes an engineering degree.

I probably woulda taken that bet too, because it's a pretty safe one. Though if he did catch something I'd probably have fallen out of my chair laughing. That beam's just a bit sketch though. I seem to remember being told 7 days before I could park on my driveway and 21 days before it hit full cure. Though maybe it's different for the types of concrete they're using in driveways vs beams.

Wow. That crane pad looked a bit sketchy to me. Moving water against vertical walls is never a good thing. You and the other operator seem to be very professional, but OSHA would have a field day with the general contractor on the job. Sleeveless shirts, lack of fall protection, no hard hats....so many infractions. I am a proud union crane operator who has been in this craft for 27 years now. I just came across your channel a few days ago, but I am enjoying it. Keep up the good work.

I always thought that bearings were put between the pre-stressed beams and the abutments to allow for thermal movement but it looked as if the beams were rested straight on top. Was it just the angle and we could not see the bearings?
@ToTheTopCrane
@ToTheTopCrane 4 жыл бұрын
This bridge didn't have bearings placed in it. The beams were set on pads. At a later date, it was all formed up and the tops of the piers were poured, encasing the ends of the beams. Many thanks for watching! 🙂🏗

Have you done a video about the ticking in the cab?. Im assuming its the joystick thumper or drum rotation indicator? How does that system work? As you can assume i googled the tick and thats what i got...lol
@brucelee64485
@brucelee64485 4 жыл бұрын
Your correct Jesse. The ticking sound lets Jimmy know that the winch drum is turning and how fast it is going. It's a safety item that has to be working in the cab of the crane in order to be able to work. As Jimmy has said in past videos , it's part of the job. I believe that there is a chopper wheel and sensor on the winch drum that sends a signal to the clicker in the cab. Some of the cranes that I have been on also had a wheel sheave in front of the cab of the crane that was painted red and white that sort of calibrated how much line has moved off and on the winch drum so that the operator knows how fast and how much line is going in and out during picks.

Hi Jimmy, Great video. Any thoughts on how expensive that lost girder will be to the overall project's costs? Looks like a big ripple effect to me in having to duplicate much of the process to install the replacement girder. I wonder who takes the hit on that. Stay safe kid, I enjoy your insights.

How old is the tadano 180? And is there any reason you got the 180 over a 220? The company i work for have a tadano 160 and a 220. I dont think we will replace the 160 with a new 160 when that time will come. The 220 is about the same carrier size as a 160/180, is stronger and has more counterweights, and can be rigged as a 160 if that is needed.
@ToTheTopCrane
@ToTheTopCrane 4 жыл бұрын
Our 180 is a 2013. The company I work for bought it because of our previous experiences with Tadano, the price and availability. We purchased it used. It also fits our market very well. With all of that being said....if I had to go out and buy a new crane today, considering the area in which we serve, I would buy a Tadano ATF-220 for the reasons you listed. Many thanks for watching! 🙂🏗

another cool vid Jimmy, question is do you have any say on how your pad is constructed? It looks to be sand? Heavy rip rap under then sand top? I would question what the hell I was sitting on if it were me especially near moving water, lol!
@ToTheTopCrane
@ToTheTopCrane 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! We were consulted on the construction of the crane pad. The base was constructed from rip-rap and capped with compacted, damp sand. Compacted damp sand will support an incredible amount of weight. Also, where the pad was built, the river is only a foot deep or so. Which made a big difference in stability. Many thanks for watching! 🙂🏗
