Today, I brought the Remington Thunderbolt .22lr to the range. You know, that round everyone loves to trash and claims is pure garbage. I thought I’d see just how bad it really is, and boy, was I surprised! This was significantly better than I had anticipated. Sure, the velocities were, to put it kindly, all over the place, and the standard deviation was high. But guess what? The groupings were surprisingly good. I challenge all of you to grab a box next time you're at the range and see how it performs for you.

The last time I bought Thunderbolt was some years before they closed down, and that was not good at all. That was the general perception of everybody shooting it at that time. It seems that the new owners did something to increase the quality so if I ever get some available in shops I will try it again and see what my rifle "think" of it. I still have 3 full packets of the old production I bought that time and will compare with the new ones if I find it.

When I got into shooting I did a lot of rimfire and used to shoot a remington 597 and a ruger 10/22 is what I shot most. I used to use thunderbolt. I recall it being pretty good in the semi auto's. I just remember it would get the semi's dirty very quickly and I just stopped using it cause it got the rifles so dirty so quick. With a bolt action, likely not as big a deal. May have to go and get a box or two and just see how it shoots in one of my bolt guns.

@@thegunviking I don't know about the formula, but growing up ( 75 years old now ) I shot a ton of Thunderbolt ammo. It was cheap and plentiful. I remember buying shorts for 25 cents a box of 50. In the early 70 to 75 yr. I reached NRA expert 50 yd Bulleye rating with Remington standard velocity It was pretty good ammo at that time, it has a very nice bullet looks like SK bullets .Remington ammo is not that good now, and I think it is problem is powder measurement. I would love to see this resolved. At this time CCI SV is the only rimfire ,USA made worth buying for target shooting. I know that if USA wanted to make good 22 LR they could. I really don't know why they don't we are becoming a nation of junk.

Several at my club use this because it's the cheapest and are using it in pistols at 30 feet, other ammo(Federal) has been getting a reputation for not igniting (bad for timed competition).
@thegunviking

As you say when it comes to timed events, like steel challenge that I shoot a lot, a FTF is a killer. It MUST ignite. Accuracy is second to reliability. And in my experience, and yours it seems, Federal has a higher degree of that problem.

Hmm, I think you may have bought a one-in-a-lifetime batch/box... A similar thing happened to me with Federal Champion 714 (Standard Velocity), 20 boxes of one batch I bought was equal to RWS Target Rifle/Rifle Match and (good but not great) SK Standard Plus and SK Rifle Match. The next 20 boxes of another batch of this 714 stuff were a total failure, equal to what Thunderbolts are usually showing: velocity all over the place and sometimes 'puffs' and sometimes supersonic 'bangs' with inaccuracy on target to match...
