Mikhail Tal - 9 November 1936 - 28 June 1992) was a Soviet Latvian chess Grandmaster and the eighth World Chess Champion (from 1960 to 1961).
Widely regarded as a creative genius and one of the best attacking players of all time, Tal played in a daring, combinatorial style. His play was known above all for improvisation and unpredictability. Every game, he once said, was as inimitable and invaluable as a poem. He was often called "Misha", a diminutive for Mikhail, and "The magician from Riga". Both The Mammoth Book of the World's Greatest Chess Games and Modern Chess Brilliancies include more games by Tal than any other player. In addition, Tal was a highly regarded chess writer. He also holds the records for both the first and second longest unbeaten streaks in competitive chess history.
The Mikhail Tal Memorial has been held in Moscow annually since 2006 to honour Tal's memory.

Soviet army in WW2 allegedly had that "Nas mnogo" (We are many) approach. That said, real war is not turn-based, so I don't think chess strategy would work the same way. Huge sacrifices have been made for some victories though, and by other armies as well. E.g. the troops that were first to land in Normandy had losses up to 90%.

If you think about it, with sacrifices tal ends the game around the middle. Other players when they get an advantage trade down everything to use their only extra pawn to victory. Tal many times manages to end the game with as few casualties as possible. A few tactical sacrifices can lead to a lot less total deaths, opposed to no tactical sacrifices but a lot "unavoidable casualties" in the end. Tal... sees the greater picture.

Has anybody ever cried after playing Tal? I mean it's horrible, you are playing somebody, and they do something, that looks like a horrible blunder, they lost their piece, their other piece is trapped, you're thinking how you're going to finish the game off.... and then you are not even able to give up your queen to stop the mate for two or three extra moves, because it's pinned.

I'd say he probably had his plan prepared when he played QB6

Probably when he woke up that morning.

I don't think he knew until Barcza played Rc1. If Barcza moved Rd1 he would have been able to successfully defend the position and even though Tal could still cause trouble on the queen side Barcza could at some point take Tal's trapped bishop and be up a full rook in the endgame. Of course it looked much better to play Rc1 otherwise you're giving up the c2 pawn, but that's what attacking can do--force your opponent to make mistakes!

I think Rd1 still loses because after Rxc1 white’s defence falls apart just as quickly.

I dunno, black will be able to take white's e and c pawns, but white can also force a queen trade with Qd4 and then white has two rooks for a rook and a bishop and is only down one pawn. If you were black what would you play after white played a hypothetical Rd1? Take one of white's pawns, or do something to avoid a queen trade?

I laughed so hard every time you commented on Tal being up a piece, specially when you said he was "down the exchange, but now this is Tal's territory". It's like a comedy character that wins a fight by losing.

Only 00:49 and i'm already in love with the idea of "tal being able to sacrifice a piece with actually being not down a piece" hahahahaha Thank you for your work master!
