Not only are they NOT lit, but she tells them to remain close to the candles because the stairs can be treacherous. She then holds the candelabra in the hand furthest from the wall (no rail). 😂

If you have never seen Cloris Leachman’s final move, The Scout’s Guide To the Zombie Apocalypse, I highly recommend it just to see her. She is hilarious as always, right up to the end.

Turns out that director Mel Brooks was just having some fun with a classic cinematic "villain" gag from old melodramas. There is no real logic for the horses' neighing since most of the time there is no way they could even see or hear Frau Blucher or the people saying her name.
