*To all the people who keep asking "will this work for my bird too", please have a look at the description or even just the title - YES, this method works for ALL BIRDS!* In fact, this way of gradually building trust is so universal that it would probably work on most ANIMALS, including humans. PS. Please don't put other humans in a cage, even though it may be tempting sometimes.

I went to a friend and breeder which held the budgie we would receive in his hands daily 2 days after hatching. She hates fingers but loves sitting on your shoulder, nibbling on everything. Drinking tea and following the mouse cursor on the monitor when it moves. The 2nd one was store bought and very scared if everyrhing but we tamed it by giving it freedom and space and basically just letting him copy the 1st birds behavior. He's still terrified of hands but does sit on you if the first budgie is also sitting on you and sometimes when he feels like it(the 1st budgie is very dominant) the 2nd one loves sitting near the window looking outside, nibbling on stuff and sleeping. Although he is terrified of hands he does fly into the cage on command and after a little bit of encouragement(IE very slowly stretching your arm in its direction until he flies off which usually means into the cage after hearing the comnand)

My budgie was really scared of me (made the mistake of putting my hand in the cage when I first got it) until I started trying this a few days ago and he already seems a LOT more comfortable with my presence. He’s always relaxed around me and constantly stares at me. I’m still going to give it another week or two of using this method and I’ll edit how it goes :)

I'm going through this right now with a budgie that I rescued. We've got a long way to go. Some days he "seems" to be making good progress but then we take 2 steps back, somehow, so I'm slowing way down and we're sort of starting over. I can trek he's got a real sweet side to him but he's still really scared. I keep catching him starting at me, though, when I'm reading or on my computer. It's too cute because, he immediately looks the other way and pretends he wasn't staring, just like a human would do in some cases, LOL. I know he's just observing to see if I'm OK.

ONE OF THE BEST VIDEOS I have seen on taming a frightened bird. I used to have a pet bullfinch and he was so sweet. Now I have problems with my pair of Parrotlets. I have many birds and they all got tame easily. But this pair is super frightened / terrified of me or anything new in the cage. I have them 3 months already and still no progress. I am going to try your method and let you know what happens. I don't need them hand tame, only not to be scared to death of me near them lol.

Hey, nice to hear from you again! :) Yes, cucumber is very good for goldfinches because of its minerals - especially during moulting season! Zucchini is good, too, though Gigi will likely only pick out the seeds (great for keeping a goldfinch busy though). Greetings from rainy Vienna! :)

Nice to see one of your videos again to.. :) Yes Goldfinches are birds that are always on the go and playing around. Will try Zucchini as well. Here in Malta it is hot.. summer is in full blast now. So when do you think he will moult, just before winter or now? And how many times a year do Goldfinches moult? And if you don't mind me asking what editing software do you use (I have a lot to learn)... Nice Day..
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 7 жыл бұрын
That's a good question! Most birds' moulting rhythm is strongly tied to daylight hours. In Central Europe, goldfinches moult once a year around August, September, though in Southern Europe it might be a bit later. My editing software is Magix Video Deluxe 2016, which sucks because it always crashes at the wrong time, haha. It's really easy to use but also rather limited.

I've had my budgies for over 7 years now. And when I first got them, Idk why but I never waited for them to 'get used to their surroundings". Because when you first bring them home, everything is scary to them. You want to start interacting the very first day so they see YOU as their safe place, rather than their cage that most let their bird 'get used' to in. If they see you as their safe spot, taming them is much much easier! And they aren't as attached to their cage.

Happy to be of service. If I may add, in my experience there is little to no benefit in painstakingly hand rearing goldfinches because they are naturally inquisitive anyway - in fact, I got Leporello when he was already six weeks old. On the other hand, hand rearing often results in practical defects later on - such as the bird's inability to husk larger seeds (a skill taught by goldfinch parents to their young and not learned otherwise). Just my two cents.

Hello, thank you for all your videos. I just got a goldfinch and already made the common mistakes you pointed out in other videos. I had to take him to the vet for nail trimming I am glad that was out of the way. Anyway, I’m learning as I go. As I have a cat my bird is in my bedroom and I’m practicing there. He is still scared of me. I play chamber music for him and whistle with him when he does the typical calling sounds. He is already eating and sitting on one leg and sort of relaxes around me. The comfort techniques and trust building are very helpful videos at this point. I had no idea he could respond to blinking and smacking lips. That was very awesome to see. However, as soon as I start moving closer he panics. Which I can understand after what he went through. I am debating whether or not I’m going to get him a female companion, because I don’t like to leave him alone there. He has a swing, food items to explore and play with so he does have his activities. I thought it was important to first make him comfortable around me and his new home, before I add another bird. I was wondering if this is a good way or should I get him a companion sooner? He is getting used to all his new room and a different setting, now inside. He was outside in a goldfinch cage, though well taken care of. It’s a big change for him and I want him to be happy. Thank you again and sorry for the long message. Your videos inspire and motivate me quite a bit. Take care greetings from Holland. Joey.
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Joey, thank you for your kind words. It's always nice to see people trying their best for their birds! Chamber music certainly helps a lot, it's incredible how well birds respond to music. Getting your goldfinch a companion is definitely a good idea. They are very social birds and they need 8+ hours of companionship every day (also at least 4-6 hours of free flight, but that's a different subject). So if you have your bird in your bedroom, where you presumably spend only an hour or two awake every day (and probably not during your goldfinch's peak activity hours), it is imperative that he get another creature of his kind to spend his life with. You have a point in letting your goldfinch settle in for a week or two, but I wouldn't wait too long to add a companion. Finches are notoriously territorial, and chances are your finch might behave aggressively to any bird you add later on. Hope this helps! Greetings from Austria.

Sounds exactly like my situation (only different kind of bird). I have male budgie and it took him 1 year from a pet store for him to now come to me and play with me. I've always left his cage open. I got him a female companion (who is well past the 30 day quarantine in a separate room) - but they still haven't met because she freaks out over anything. She is a rescue (about 1 yr old) but was picked on by another female budgie so she doesn't seem to like me either. I've gotten to the point where she does not freak when covering cage for the night, but she still has the panic attacks and darts violently back and forth at the slightest movement of a perch or my hand in her cage. I got a really nice new cage, but still am not sure how to get her to go in it as hers is all she has ever known. I even leave the cage door open and she only flew out one time and she did not fly well. Was running into walls, etc and it was quite traumatizing. I extended a rope perch from the current cage door to new cage, but day after day she just sits and seems to have no desire or curiosity to explore anything new. I sit in the next room not too far away with the door open and she can see and hear me playing with my male bird all day long. She chirps and all that and seems happy, but just does not seem to want to join in the fun. I even placed a playset with millet and other treats and toys just outside her cage just a few inches away and she will not go to it. When I got my first bird, I left his cage open all day (except at night for sleeping) and he naturally and gradually became more curious of me and my pen and laptop and those things that are now toys to him -- by the way, pretty much everything is a toy to him. He has turned into a good-natured, smart, curious little guy in only a 1 year and a few months with me -- I ended up working from home full time, so that really helped with bonding as I'm almost never gone. I got her for him to be with when I'm not home and maybe going back to work. However, it is not working as I had thought (or at least not as fast -- going on 2 months now since I got her). That is why I came here to get some advice. I will try sitting next to her all day at my office desk and see if that improves things. Maybe she doesn't like men? Not sure other than her old abusive playmate how she was treated at the other owner's house as I did not meet them - she was brought over by the rescue group. I may need a female "bird whisperer" to come and tame her :-) Good luck with your decision to get a companion. I do recommend it, but feel for me it was best to wait at least a year till he was comfortable with me and now I think he appreciates that I got another one and sings and chatters to her all day from across the room. It has improved my bond with him, I think. He does try to fly in there a lot, but cannot because I put a door screen so he cannot fly on top of her cage and intimidate her ... which he did a couple times. They will eventually meet, it will just take time and that is all I have. Patience for days! All the best ... --La

To be honest in my opinion it just depends on its personality, when I got my bird I didn’t put her inside the cage I let her fly around for a while and she was actually happy then she was a bit calm and she was out for 1 hour after that I put her in her cage. *4 Months Later* When I call her name and I snap she flies to me she always wants to be around me. (I’m not hating I’m just saying my opinion now probably everybody is going to reply to me with hate.)

One of the most misconceptions is that right when u get him keep the cage open, and that is wrong, and I learned that the hard way, I just got a bird and I left the cage open he flew into the curtains, I couldn’t reach, then he moved into another spot, where he bit and I got him back in his cage. Very helpful advice! Thank you so much for your videos. I am looking forward to see much more! Leporello is adorable. My Niffler (canary/goldfinch mule) is crazy about cucumber and apple, also likes salad. I also tried banana, tomato and strawberry but no interest there. As for the getting him to step up ...no chance. He would eat from the small pot in my hand but never from my hand directly....

Hi there, thanks, my pleasure! Yes, banana, tomato and strawberry aren't very popular, I wonder why - perhaps it's the consistence? I've found that birds which are accustomed to wet egg food will eat other soft foods as well... but it's quite a process to get them to try new things. - I've got another video planned for the not-so-far future in which I'm going to show how to teach a bird how to get used to your hand and to step up, so stay tuned :)

This might be a weird question but I'm not sure if my bird is scared of me or just aggressive. I have a cockatiel and he will go on my hand, arm shoulder etc but not without hissing at me a little bit first and edging away. He also hisses alot and runs from others in my house. Would this method help to stop this from happening?
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 5 жыл бұрын
It sounds like your bird is nervous. Leporello was that way, too. What helps is to deliberately move very slowly, in a manner that you bird sees you at all times. Then building trust with positive interaction, such as hand-feeding treats. Also it might be a good idea to refrain from scritching him as long as he's still hissing at you - I know it's tempting, but this is often the reason birds are nervous (they aren't used to someone else in their personal space yet, and they need a little bit more time until they feel ready to invite you into it). Hope this helps!

Windows, mirrors, vases and aquariums must be covered/veiled, toxic plants have to be removed (google all your plants to check whether they're poisonous), shelves and closets should not have a crack between them and the wall (a panicked bird can get stuck here), spray cans (deodorants, hair spray, air fresheners) must NOT be used around birds, same with non-stick (Teflon) pans and hair straighteners (their fumes are deadly to birds!), and definitely no smoking or cigarettes anywhere near the bird! My bird was a demon he bit me everyday but know he’s the best pet ever he never bites and he always gives me kisses That’s how u gained his trust! 1- I took him to the vet to clip his wings because if u want to be with your pet without him running away 2- I keep her in my room when she’s out because she feels more safe in there sense Iam usually in my room , just keep them with you 3- when he bites Dont hurt him or shout or push him away it will make him even want to bite more sense he sees your reactions 4- take him out side even if it’s your backyard just take him out side if his wings are clipped he can’t fly but if it’s not clipped take him out in his cage 5- feed him in your hands like rewards if he comes out in his cage without biting give him some seeds and also make him try more fruits! Like bananas 6- when it’s time to take your bird to there cage before u go give her a kiss or clap your hands slowly so the bird knows u didn’t lock her up Bec u don’t like her 7- I don’t know if this works for all of the people but when mine was biting I usually took him to the fridge and he would just look and go up to the bananas to eat 8- the most important is when u give your pets a bath 9- let your birds to watch things you do like clean your room or make your bed it will help him know you more he will just watch you do stuff 10- again this one is optional but my bird loves watching KZfaq or tv with me he would just calm down and chill I hope this helped becouse it helped me a lot me and my bird are best friends know we even watch anime together !

I heard you have to tame them one at a time or something, but i do not have access to another cage nor i want to take them and stress them out by chasing them around and grabbing. So is it okay if they're in the same place? Also while I'm at it, I'll ask another question. One of the birdies likes to fly out of the cage, so I've been keeping it open for the last couple of days so she can do whatever she wants, but should i close it for this? Or is it okay to keep it open?
