Your Favourite Chocolate is Filled With Toxic Heavy Metals

Two recent independent investigations have revealed concerning levels of toxic heavy metals (cadmium & lead) in most chocolate brands.
As You Sow, which is the non-profit leader in shareholder advocacy in the US, filed legal notices with over 20 companies, including Trader Joe’s, Hershey’s, Mondelez, Lindt, Whole Foods, Kroger, Godiva, See’s Candies, Mars, Theo Chocolate, Equal Exchange, Ghirardelli, and Chocolove.
But we didn't find Mr. Beast's Feastables bars within the 500 different bars that were tested.
So naturally we're now wondering, are they really better than Hersheys?
Now, if you're worried but you still love chocolate way too much to give it up, then we got you covered.
Some of the safest options seem to be German brands like Rapunzel and Vivani.
Then the other specific safer options are..
- Mast Organic Dark Chocolate 80% Cocoa
- Taza Chocolate Organic Deliciously Dark Chocolate 70% Cacao
- Ghirardelli Intense Dark Chocolate 86% Cacao
- Ghirardelli Intense Dark Chocolate Twilight Delight 72% Cacao
- Valrhona Abinao Dark Chocolate 85% Cacao
It's important to keep in mind that no chocolate is completely free of heavy metals, but consuming chocolates from these brands can help keep your exposure to a minimum.
But always pay attention to the serving size, as the maximum allowable daily limits (for heavy metals) are calculated per serving, not per whole bar.

This is heartbreaking! But I'd rather know and be mindful of the brands I'm buying than loading on lead and cadmium

there is not a way to extract the lead and cadinum from the caca?
@healthyholistichomes

There are no traditional methods like washing or cooking, however there are some methods like phytoremediation, biochar amandment, genetic engineering, chemical extraction and bioleaching - they all sound terrifying

There's some listed in the description that according to consumer reports are good - I would hope that's still the case

Are there *any* Chocolates that are safe? or do i just cut off chocolate all together?
@healthyholistichomes

We haven’t cut everything off and still eat them (in moderation of course). There are some safer options in the description. You can also check the consumer reports page for this, however as far as I understand this almost nobody can guarantee to have their product completely free from lead & cadmium

If you really like the taste of chocolate try switching to carob. It has no oxalates or caffeine. Also has no heavy metals and pesticides

I love to switch cacao with carob when making treats and snacks at home :) It really is a great option. Not allowed on FODMAP diet, but otherwise a great alternative. I had carob chips before, but they're addictive :D

@@healthyholistichomes yes I understand. I just want to let people know about how poisonous chocolate is. Stick to that diet it really is helping.

There's a bit more to the story...an activist group called "As You Sow" is behind Proposition 65 the STRICT law in California, that Consumer Reports used...NOT the FDA laws. "California's limitations set by Proposition 65 are some of the MOST protective in the country, according to Consumer Reports. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration offers more flexible recommendations for daily lead intake at 2.2 micrograms for children and 8.8 micrograms for women of childbearing age."

What's your take on all this?
@mboiko
@mboiko Жыл бұрын
@@healthyholistichomes Consumer Reports wanted to significantly increase their views so instead of using the normal FDA standard...they used a much more strict CA standard (Proposition 65) created by an activist group called "As You Sow". This then alarms many people and gets much more attention, because they know most people will not "read the fine print".

Wouldn't know. I'd want to hope and believe that, however, I know how things tend to get later down the chain and how all the little decisions ultimately affect the final outcome.

I think this threat is very much over stated. I think I'll keep enjoying my chocolate, especially Hershey's.

Depends on the individual and lifestyle I'd guess. If you're already suffering under a heavy metal burden or if a child is, then this can easily tip the scale. However if you're healthy and working out and sauna -ing then I wouldn't think there's any problem with enjoying some chocolate.

@@healthyholistichomesgood video I heard that you sweat out heavy metals is this true? If it is would it be safe to consume chocolate more regularly? I eat mainly animal based so any heavy metals from plants won't be in my body I assume because of this I could get away with eating more chocolate? I love chocolate but rarely eat it because of this information I always worry because there's always information like this would 50-70% dark chocolate in smaller amounts twice a week be fine? Lidnt 78% was my favorite I do know I did experience a weird fatigue feeling in my head when I ate really dark chocolate don't know if this is a placebo or not 😎👍
