Have you been wondering about pre-emergent products for your lawn care needs? Look no further than this guide explaining what they DO and DON'T do and how to use them effectively.
Pre emergents are used to prevent crabgrass and other grassy annuals but will not control things like dandelions or clover. Proper timing and application rates will give you the best chance of success whether you're using prodiamine, dithiopyr, or pendamethalin as active ingredients.
For more info and a guide for a full season of lawn care check out my cool season guide. ON SALE until April 1, 2020 ryanknorrlawncare.com/product...

Ryan, I am glad you mentioned at the end that you don't have to continue to apply these year after year. Once your lawn has reached a point where the grass and soil are functioning well, herbicides and pesticides can be used sparingly. Nothing wrong with hand pulling some stragglers as long as your lawn isn't too large. :)

I've never really used herbicides in granular form. I love my WDG Prodiamine. i've only used it twice, last fall, and 2 days ago, but it worked very well on my Zoysia by stopping winter weeds from successfully germinating, and Zoysia is more tolerant than many grass types so I have more wiggle room with my application rates. I keep Quinclorac and 2, 4D on hand for spot treating as needed, and a Spectracide product that has Quinclorac, 2, 4D, Dicamba and Sulfentrazone and that is inexpensive and works pheromonally well for me! I bought the Spectracide primarily because the Sulfentrazone would treat my previous nut sedge issue. One application cleared my lawn of sedge and most other weeds. Quinclorac and 2, 4D is safe on many newly seeded lawns too, so it is a great way to fight back weeds while trying to establish a new lawn or over seeding with tender new growth. Thanks for your channel Ryan! You're one of very few people I respect and like to watch for lawn care. Dang, I say that, and realize I hadn't subscribed, which I just fixed.

If I use prodiamine doing a split application in the spring, would I still be able to overseed in the fall? Soil temps cross 50 mid March, then across 65 beginning of may. So my last application would be early may, would I still be okay to overseed in early September?

Actually, Greencast is surprisingly accurate for stating the AVERAGE soil temp for the day, assuming there aren't massive elevation changes in your area. The problem with measuring your own lawn is that you only get the temp at that time. Unless you are taking temperatures throughout the day, such as with an installed thermometer, and averaging them out, you are only getting the temp at the moment, which may be quite a bit above or below the daily average temp.

@@ryanknorrlawncare Prodiamine is the least harsh because its vapor barrier stays relatively shallow. Dithiopyr is next in terms of depth but it is not as long lasting. Pendimethalin moves rather deep in the soil.

@@ryanknorrlawncare Thank you Ryan for the information. I enjoy watching your videos. One more question. My lawn is well established at this point and have been working on it for about 3 years now. I was debating putting tenacity down about a month before over seeding to keep the weeds at bay instead of at the time of overseeding. What are your thoughts about when I should put the tenacity down? Is it better a month before or at the time of overseeding? Thank you for your time and thoughts.

A good watch, this will be my first year using prodiamine as I've never really needed it the last 10 years I've been in my home, I've mainly been able to keep up with spot sprays and have been good my yard hasn't really had weeds for years except for last year they were starting to come in heavier than ever before. Got some seed down in the fall and now I'm anxious to get out there and work. So prodiamine application needs soil to be 50ish and then watered in? Is there a too early or too late to apply?

If the soil is dry enough to accept a 1/2" of watering in and your temps are on the upward swing with consistency then go for it.

Hey Ryan, my grass took a hit last year near the end... My daughter was born and finishing up my school caused some issues in the lawn. It needs to be seeded, flattened out, and pre emergent. What do you think, I don’t want crabgrass but my lawn looks like it’s so patchy and you see the mower tracks of dirt. Do I risk the weeds this summer to fill in then take next summer for the million dollar view or can I achieve both this season. Thanks a lot, miss your vids!

Sounds like you might need to do some seeding this spring and not do the traditional pre-emergent this spring. You can still watch it closely and spray for crabgrass later before the plants get mature

Explain to me when I broadcast sprayed prodiamine and then bio stimulants, why spots turned brown year after year. Do I need to wait before spraying the bios? There was no disease but the grass pulled up easily. Reseeding was useless until fall.

Ryan, I am having a little trouble figuring out the square footage of my front lawn. I live on a large lot on a culdesac and the front lawn is kind of shaped like an upside down triangle and is much larger than the back yard ... It is narrow down by the street and much wider up near the house. The back and the sides are traditional rectangular shapes. How do I measure the front.

I am trying to do an all organically treated yard. I can hear all the groans...lol! Yes, I am a tree hugging hippie. So, I bought the Jonathan Green Organic Lawn Program. We dethatched, aerated and overseeded with Black Beauty seed (Jonathan Green) in the fall. Any tips for us organic hippie folks? Lol!!

Pull weeds by hand. Cut with a regularly sharpened blade, at the right height, twice a week. Water appropriately. That’ll work for any yard, organically treated included!

Honestly other than fertilizer (which is not always 100% organic) I have been doing this approach for quite a while in my backyard. There's a lot of stuff you can pull by hand and really the only thing I struggle with is clover but some people are ok with it.

Hey Ryan, I completed a KBG renovation in my front yard last fall but did have some clover show up. My plan was to overseed more KBG this spring to thicken it up, so I wasn't planning on using a pre-emergent. But ... since KBG takes time to grow, should I let the existing grass do its thing and use a pre-emergent to prevent any potential crabgrass from coming in?
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 3 жыл бұрын
I'd probably go pre-emergent and work to push the bluegrass. It will get going in the spring following a fall renovation and should do well without overseeding

Ortho Weed B Gon with Crabgrass Control as 2,4-D, Dicamba, and Quinclorac. I used this on some crabgrass that had really matured and it really worked. You did not mention Quinclorac. Is that ingredient a good one in your opinion for the crabgrass?

@dumptruckintruthduke 3 жыл бұрын
He was discussing preemergents. What you mentioned are postemergents. I've had some luck with quinclorac if applied while crabgrass is young. Once matured I've had to do multiple applications. But use a preemergent, and avoid this all together.

I need to do a full lawn level, overseed procedure to my lawn (New house, previously neglected). The current lawn has some patches of weed grass I’d like to get rid of. Should I avoid the pre emergent since I want to overseed and promote new grass growth? Just tackle that this fall instead once some new grass comes up?
@ryanknorrlawncare

If you are going to overseed then you'll need to avoid pre-emergent now. You could just get started this first part of the season and get comfortable with the current lawn and get your renovation stuff planned for fall
