With so many choices on the market it gets difficult picking the right product. Most of us choose a product that is rated for crabgrass control.
The Ginja categorizes pre emergents into three categories.
Group 1 - General Pre emergents with Anti-rooting technology
* Prodiamine
* Isoxaben
* Combined products with Trifluralin (used in preen, prevents rhizome shoots from grass) and Isoxaben (snapshot)
Group 2 - General Pre emergent with anti-rooting and post emergent control for crabgrass
* Dithiopyr
Dithiopyr will control crabgrass up to the 3 leaf stage making dithiopyr a valuable spray. The marketing is a little deceiving. Although it does act as a post emergent spray up to the 3 leaf stage for crabgrass and some winter annuals it does not provide any other post emergent services for weeds post germination.
Dithiopyr has excellent anti-rooting properties. It permeates into clay very well. I find it doesn't work as well as an over winter product because of the permeability and I don't recommend it for sandy soils.
Group 3 - General Pre emergent with anti-rooting and post emergent control for annual and biennial weeds
* pendimethalin - excellent anti-rooting pre emergent with a post emergent control that kills simple broadleafs. the kicker is the post emergent control disrupts stems of annuals and biennial weeds before they leaf making this a very valuable tool for people with annual and biennial broadleaf weed issues. Sprays are far more effective than the granular counterpart for post emergent control. Pendimethalin will stain.
* Mesotrione - Pre emergent properties and a broad list of annual and biennial post emergent weed control. This is a great tool for someone who intends to overseed there lawn. I recommend 2 applications before the overseed. Be sure to pick a warm season or cool season grass that's on the label that won't be effected by the product.

Pendimethalin has a tendency to STAIN. Also note the post emergent control for pendimethalin 2G states "pendulum 2g controls weeds as they germinate but will not control established weeds. Therefore, areas to be treated should be free of established weeds. For the control of established weeds, pendulum 2g may be used in conjunction with herbicides registered for postemergence use. they do that because they don't want home owners buying it at concentrate. the 1/2 gallon is about the smallest you'll get it. they used to do a 32oz jug but I haven't seen it in a while.

I know this is very uncommon or unadvisedly but I used tenacity for spring seeding of KBG/PRG and it was the best think ever. I’m about 5 weeks in and it’s already nice and full with 0 weeds. Now it’s just maintenance from here

Used HJ every 6 months, give or take, for several decades both in my yard and most of my mowing customers yards. Always went heavy and early in Bermuda yards but had to wait until after overseeding and germination for the fall app with fescue, usually late Oct/early Nov in OK. Hit it again in March and had very few weeds to deal with after a full season of Barricade.

Hey ginja, it’s a little pricey, but it’s good for picking up a new lawn that never had lawncare service and it’s spring and it’s loaded with weeds, they have dimension w/ lockup... I know dithiopyr has post emergent tendencies but only in the early stages of leaf tiller and that’s where lockup takes over!!! Works VERY well for knock down power and preemergent... I only use it when it’s a new takeover and they have a good base to work with but also has a ton of weeds in all different phases of development!!

Love how we are seeing much more talk of cycling herbicides for prevention of weed resistance. From all that I've read/seen on the subject though, the product's Mode of Action/Class has to be rotated in order to increase efficacy... not the active ingredient. For example: Pendimethalin, Prodiamine, and Dithiopyr all fall into the same group classification (Group 3) which means rotating between those active ingredients will not improve efficacy. Sadly, I overlooked this when stocking up for my yearly plans... I've got more pre-em's falling into the same class than I'd really like to admit, hahaha!

It is true. There are some benefits to switching up active ingredients but the majority of the benefits is switching classes. The options are super limited unless you're going to mix up a batch of corn gluten meal at $8 to $12 per 1000ft2

Great information and I like the cost per square feet that you provide. However, you indicated that an 8oz. bottle of Tenacity will treat 4 to 5 acres. According to Tenacity’s label, you apply at the rate of 5 to 8 ounces per acre (4 ounces per acre for St. Augustine).

Hi Ginga, so glad you made this video. I am faced with helping a friend with an acre yard currently overrun with Dallisgrass, crabgrass and buttonweed. I treated with Blindside and MSMA for some current control but my concern is next year. I am not sure there is much Bermuda to push so am considering over seeding in mid May next year. My concern has been about the need for pre-emergent to help control the excessive weed germination but also need to be able to germinate the new Bermuda. Tenacity may be the answer. I am in Greensboro, NC area so crabgrass will likely be germinating by mid-March. When should I apply and will I be OK over seeding with Bermuda? After first year, prodiamine would be my choice in Feb. Thanks for all your GREAT videos and sharing your expertise.

I am just south of STL and getting ahead of the game this year, first full year with this house and first time homeowner. Watched this video along with a few others (GCI, Ryan K, LCN) I chose tenacity with Southern AG surfactant and Lazer dye for even app as my pre-emergent this year. I did two post emergent apps last year late with store bought (saw limited result) and a lot of hand pulling and hard raking before over seeding in September. I was 85/15 weed/grass when I bought the house now I am probably 40/60 weed(mainly creeping charlie and star/crabgrass)/grass. Any advice going into spring? not looking for a golf course, just the nicest lawn in town. BTW this video got you a sub. Thank you in advance for any and all advice.

Hey C_Town. I'm all about diagnosing first. Could be that you're fighting some perennial grass types as opposed to annual grasses. First things first we need a 100% positive identification on what you're trying to get rid of. Creeping charlie is best treated in the fall time with a triclopyr based spray. Sounds like you're on the right track. Just keep in mind if you do a pre emergent you won't be able to do a spring overseed unless you stick with tenacity and the pre emergent properties won't nearly as long as the pre emergents in this video. I would take some samples of the weeds to a local nursery and get some positive identification then we can put together a solid plan of action.

Good advice as usual! I get a lot of grassy annual weeds, crab grass wasn't too bad last year but I really want to take out the POA, foxtail, barnyard grass (and quack if at all possible but I'm probably screwed either way with quackgrass). My goal this spring and summer is to control weeds and make a good foundation for a heavy overseeding and renovation mid August, so the weeds arent causing problems and choking the seed out later on. Any suggestions? I was thinking about doing a 4 month app rate of prodiamine in a couple weeks. And maybe tenacity if it will be needed just prior to seeding in August. Prodiamine is quite a bit cheaper than dithipoyr.

If you have the extra $$ I would do an 2 to 3 month app of pendimethalin and then an app of tenacity every two weeks followed by the overseed on the 2nd or 3rd app.

Ginja, love your content and been subscribed for a while. Full of very useful information. Taking care of new Kentucky blue sod up here in Michigan. Will a pre emergent stop my bluegrass seed tops from germinating when they appear in mid-May? I like to let it grow so the seed tops get put back down when I mow (mulch). And will a pre emergent stop the ‘clump tall fescue’ from germinating? That coarse grass took over my old lawn. It was everywhere and was told the only way to get rid of it was to use Roundup. Thanks for being there for us lawn geeks!!

Pre emergents stop seed germination. It will not stop seed head formation but still disallow those seeds tp germinate adds the pre emergent products are active. It will stop bunching tall fescue seed germination but if the seed has already germinated those grasses will emerge. It will not stop rhizome spreads either so the clumps will get larger

okay, so I have this "Annual bluegrass" Botanical name: Poa annua; common name: annual meadow grass, Annual bluegrass, Los spear grass, Six week grass; Genus: Bluegrass (Poa). and every year it has gotten thicker, even though I have spent many hours pulling it in previous years. What can I use to kill this stuff? It's 400 times worse this year than last year and not sure what to do. According to my app. I took a picture to identify it, and it's native to Europe and Asia. It says Poa annua is known commonly as both annual bluegrass and poa. The Latin name is derived from the Greek word poa, which is a type of fodder grass. I've been pulling it up by hand, and according to this app, this is one method to prevent infestation again, which I have done every time I saw a new plant come up, but this year it covers, at least, 30% of my yard. It says herbicides may be required but in the fall to prevent the new seeds from coming up. Have you had to deal with any of this? I have Tenacity and Quinclorac XLR8. In previous years I have also used TZone with them. Do you have any suggestions? I did notice the roots are small and shallow. I guess I can breakout the trusty dethatch rake ugh lol It's crazy how much has come up this year; because I spend many hours every summer pulling unwanted weeds as well as spot spraying and full cover spray as well. It's really like a nightmare this year. what will kill what has already grown?

I just discovered your channel and wow, what a trove of detailed info. Historically, I haven't done much other then apply weed/feed fertilizer in Spring/Summer/Fall because I don't have irrigation and I'm on a full Acre in New England so I've always relied on Mother Nature for watering. Unfortunately, the lawn is pretty weed heavy so I'm considering a baseline dose of Tenacity this October to eliminate the current weeds, followed by dithiopyr later that month and again in the Spring with my usual fertilizing to get something looking somewhat respectable. Does this sound reasonable or would I be wasting my money until I get an irrigation system installed to properly water?

I wouldn't recommend the dithiopyr unless the crabgrass is still in the 2 to 3 leaf stage. Prodiamine is much cheaper and stays in the soil better. As for the constant weed problems I would focus on a cheap calcium source and try to get some water to hell the grass

Excellent!! Instant like. In meds like antibiotics there is something called synergistic effects. This is where it's possible to use less antibiotic if two are used together. They give a greater effect than if you added the separate effects. So you can use less of each one. Has anyone done a study to see if herbicides can have this synergistic effect?

They do. It's mostly salt and negative effects on foliar response.

Great vid My question is this. I overseeded last fall, and its now a solid 5 months since KYB and Rye germinated. Its time to prevent crabgrass, so Is my grass mature enough to handle Prodiamine? Or should I put down Tenacity? I have not applied ANY pre emergent at all ever. I did throw down more seed 4 weeks ago as a winter experiment to create a thicker lawn, but I am more focused on the young KYB and if prodiamine will hurt its root growth. Thanks

If you're still in the process of overseeding I would recommend you stick with tenacity. however, even tenacity isn't rated for newly emerged grass 😒. You'll need to hold off a bit if you want the new seed to take and stay strong.

Dithiopyr is a superior product assuming it can get down to the soil. Stick to one or the other for the season

So at this point, August, I may as well start researching and coming up with a plan to prevent all the crab grass for next spring. Fertilize and get the ground ready for Spring of 2020. I just took over this job as my landscaper was very inconsistent this year. Figure I will save money in the long run learning how to do this myself. Are there any precautions or cautions for pets and kids playing on the lawn in reference to these products? Great video btw.

There general rule is to let it dry before re entry. With the granular products you want to water in .5" after applying it.

Dont want to discourage rooting for a couple of more seasons so I need to go at it in a post emerg way. I can aquire a backpack sprayer and blanket spray it. (Tenacity on the list for next fall for sure)

Heya, Ginja! You threw me a curve on this one. I had to watch it three times to wrap my head around it all. So, I'm in N. Idaho, and have a cool season lawn with some tough stuff in it that I DIDN'T PLANT! After watching your chock-full-o-info video here, I went to the Tenacity training module and educated myself a bit more. I ended up ordering some from Amazon, along with some dye, and will use dishsoap for surfactant. Now, I've always been a weed-n-feed guy, got meh results, and no luck getting rid of the buckhorn plantain plantation in my front yard, so I chose the Tenacity because it is pre and post emergent, and safe for use on pretty much any cool season lawn. I'm gonna be getting a sprayer and learning a lot this year. Will you hold my hand and reassure me when I start getting the "cool white" in my lawn? Any advice on what I should tell the neighbors when my lawn looks like it's got snow mold all over it? Thanks for another great vid! Looking forward to this year (it's my second summer of early retirement)!

Tell them it has the flu and it's highly contagious! Hahahaha. That bleaching is super annoying. I would purchase the surfactant that the label recommends. The dish soap is not recommended with tenacity. Also be sure that the target weed your going after is on the label. You may need a more aggressive herbicide to knock it out. I don't have a lot of hands on experience with buckhorn plantain.

Great Vid! I went with Tenacity this year, with a lawn comprised of such a high percentage of weeds, I was expecting more bareness, its only been a week though. Such a small dose makes me question if I did it right though. 2 teaspoons of tenacity from a backpack sprayer for 1000sq ft of lawn sounds right though?

Hey Kevin! Sorry this comment went un replied. Thistle is best managed by a split app of prodiamine and using speedzone to spot spray. It'll take 2 seasons to filter out. be sure your watering properly the entire season to get the full use out of your pre emergents.

Start with checking sprinkler coverage and do a water output cup test. Next do a soil test to see which fertilizer is right for your soil. I prefer to use Mysoil

Great video and detail...thank you. I am in Charlotte with 2/3 acre lot and since it is now April I did not put down a pre-emergent yet. is it too late to do a PE? Can I just use the Tenacity now and then start with PE next year?
