Hand synchronization is one of the most important aspects of guitar playing. In this video, I'll share one of the best exercises for hand synchronization. The song is Dream Theater's Octovarium and this is the unison part. This one is not an easy exercise because it has odd time signatures and as you know Dream Theater uses a lot of odd time signature. So I'm going to show you how you can practice odd time signatures quickly first. Then I'll start to play with you with half speed and going to improve my speed gradually. To fix your hand synchronization you can start with slowing down the half speed version and work on your chops.

Great exercise Ozz! One question, How do you handle your output levels on your Axe Fx to reach safe hearing levels? I can't push the output knob on the Axe Fx past 3%. I'm as high as 85dB on some presets.

It doesn't sound right man. If you are using a sound interface minimize your mic preamps volume. If you use Axe-Fx III only you can lower the output volume from the front of the unit.

@@OzzGuitar At the moment I'm running straight into the Axe Fx. Yeah I have the output volume really low like around 7 o'clock. Maybe I need to just low the studio monitor's volume. Thanks for the reply, Ozz! All the best!

How does this help with hand synchronisation? If my hands aren’t in sync when I play scales, how is being given a scale to play going to improve that? There’s no technique discussion here.

Every guitar player knows that they have to finger and pick at the same time but they can’t. If I explain for hours that’s not gonna work because they’ll practice faster than they should. So no need to discuss it. I give a practice that fixes this problem because it has a lot of position changes on the same string and you have to work hard to get a clean sound. Most importantly they can't practice faster because they won't get a sound.
