Just got these and i just made a input_boolean that turns the heat high/low and created a general thermostat to control it from the temp value from my aqara room temperature sensor.

I always did find it a little odd to put the sensor for a heating system next to the heat source heating the room, given how much a ZigBee temperature sensor doesn't cost I find it surprising that no on seems to be selling a bundle with a vale and sensor as separate components.

Nice 👍 What is your feeling on the quality of the TRV? I tested the previous model (straight not curved sides), and think the noise when adjusting the valve was too loud/annoying to have in a bedroom. Also the plastic fitting was very fragile.

They are silent. Can't comment on the brackets yet as I'm yet to mount these. I need special valves and bleed my system. Other than this touch buttons aren't super responsive but not breaking the deal.

Thanks for the video. I´m not able to put the temperature in grafana. TRV only shows me [eco_temperature], [ocal_temperature_calibration], [max_temperature], [min_temperature]. How did you do for showing just the temperature in grafana? Thanks!

Wouldn't this break the TRV's hysteresis logic? I'm wandering if it doesn't use this exact error in reporting the temperature to close the valve at a lower room temperature while the radiator still bleeds heat in the room. In my case, the external temp sensor records heat increase a good 20 minutes after the central thermostat stops the heating system (i have no TRVs, only one main thermostat used as a switch for a sonoff mini and zigbee temp sensors in each room used for reporting only). Maybe you should check using the external sensor how it actually keeps the room temp relative to the setpoint in both cases calibrated/not calibrated.

It would need more advanced features to be able to do this. Each room/radiator would have a different pattern of hysterisis. I'm yet to decide how will I handle the heating on/off setting since I can either drove it based on setpoint or time targets. I don't think this changes the way the thermostat works as the moment the temperature crosses the setpoint the valves closes. Its important to remember that we are still measuring room temperature (slow changes of temperature) Vs setpoint. The moment we reach the setpoint the heat is redirected elsewhere and the radiator starts to cool down. Cutting it early will also cause the system to fire up again early as the room thermal bleed would not be offset by the residual heat in the radiator as much. Based on this logic I believe I don't have to worry about it. I do have unpublished script I wrote over the summer to handle hysterisis and nearing values but it has been only tested on theoretical values.

The solution is using an external temp sensor. Very few valves can do it, but in any way a “smart” valve is always better than a dumb one.

Indeed. Although I've not come across calibration routines that allow for the 3rd party sensors to be used in these apps. Hence my desire to fix this

@@notenoughtech there is a bluprint in HA for this. It amends the internal TRV temp correction by sending the gap between TRV and sensor temperature as new correction value in the TRV settings.

Isn't it possible for the manufacturers of these devices to make a calibration function that takes into account the difference between the exponential and linear curve?

The old 833mhz MAX! EQ3 system would let you pair TRVs to a room wall stat. In this config the wall stat temp was used instead of the TRV temp sensor. I'm seriously surprised modern TRVs don't support something like this? The world has gone backwards.

I totally agree. Knowing how radiator affects the trv it makes no sense to gate keep this especially since ZigBee temp sensors are readily available. You could even make them bind directly thanks to ZigBee binding.

Don't they also compare radiator temp directly on the valve pin to the ambient temperature with two internal sensors?

No, they have a built in probe, which you can offset by what you think is the right amount, Aqara TRV has the option to link external one directly

Thanks for the tip :D Those controllers are gonna save me a lot and are, in the end, a very nice quality of life addition to my old heating with just one central dumb thermostat for a house with lots of rooms and bad insulation. No more hustling with space heaters or micro-managing those damned old mechanical radiator valves that aren't even thermostatic in my case.

@@notenoughtech i forgot to clarify, the mechanical ones suck a lot, these may not suck as much but it would be pretty expensive to change all Also my heating system is powered by manually feeding coal so the temperature of the water inside varies a lot and causes it to suck even more tbh

That will be hard to automate. Unless you get some coal feed system too.

I suspected it but I thought the offers would prevent some of this. My expectations were about 2-3C off after calibration... So having 8-9 was a bit of a suprise to me too
