When I commented I was getting back into delivering cement. They had mostly 5 or 8 speeds depending on how you count the low gears lol. Eaton were always easier imo.

E, these videos are the best instructional videos I've seen. On anything. You explain everything clearly and efficiently which makes it very easy to retain. I watched these after my first day of a 2 day course in getting my license. My instructor was terrible and by the end of the first day I was certain I would fail the test at the end of the second. Thanks to these videos I passed with a 97% grade! Thank you for putting these videos together! Exceptional work!

Thank you soooooo much for this video. I just spent 2 hours with my trainer and walked away a bit confused on how to shift properly. You have explained in under 15 minutes, leaving me with a much better understanding on what I need to do and why. Really Appreciate your videos and how you take the time to also explain the WHY something is to be done a certain way.

First of all thanks for taking the time on making these videos!!! I'm a little desperate because I need to get my downshifting within 3 days so I can start with a trainer other ways they send me home. I've been here 1 week and it's a LOT to take in so little time. I'm just concerned that if I don't pass I'm going to be sent back home to my family like a failure specially when I'm unemployed. I'll watch your video all night... Thanks again... I'm in truck driving school. The carriers who hire from my school (Andrus, Werner, Schneider to name a few) all require us to know double-clutching. I cannot graduate unless I can double clutch. The reason carriers want students to learn double clutching is because it saves transmission. A lot of drivers say, "Why not float the gears?" My instructors say that in floating the gears you have to be very precise in matching road speed to engine speed. Double clutching allows you to synchronize the road speed and the engine speed without as much guess work. Carriers will be happy when all they have to replace is a clutch instead of a transmission. This is why double clutching is so important to them.
@swearingen211
@swearingen211 7 жыл бұрын
Roger Douglass clutch shouldn't be touched unless you're starting from a standstill or going in reverse. If you can't float you don't need to be in a truck. Double clutching burns the clutch twice as fast.

Dope Video! I think the only you forgot to mention (for the newbies like me) is that you don't have to push the clutch all the way in for every shift... I found that you want to locate the sweet spot in the clutch range & an rmp rev between 1000-1500rpm to get a smooth up & down shift. truck shifting is different than a car. not just the double clutching but the gear has to travel a greater distance while shifting. I'm currently struggling at my truck training but I think I'll get it soon. more practice

It's because manual cars are pretty much all synchromesh transmissions. Trucks are not (they are roadranger / crash box / non-synchromesh) which is why you have to synchronize the gears by going into neutral.. otherwise it won't change gears, will grind horribly and make awful noises.

When actually driving you don't push the clutch in all the way like you would do in a car. Pushing the clutch in all the way in a truck engages a device called a clutch brake. The purpose of the clutch brake is so you can get the truck in gear when stopped.

What I don't understand are these: 1. If you can pull the vehicle out of gear just by letting off the fuel, why not just do that first, and *then* single-clutch from there into the next gear? 2. Rev-matching is always needed for floating, whether the vehicle to be float-shifted has synchros or not; I get that. (Sometimes I float my pickup truck just for fun.) So then... 3. If you have to rev-match even when using the clutch (something about not having synchros, even though I thought engaging the clutch while in neutral was supposed to be akin to rev-matching), then why even use the clutch?

I'm learning to drive Standard on an 8 speed Eaton Fuller Transmission. It's a dump truck and the downshifting is killing me. I dont know how you do it so well.
