the missiles are heat seeking so they will travel towards the hottest/closest heat source, so the flare, in theory, makes sense.

I still suspect it would be really hard to get the flare close enough though. You'd somehow have to match the rocket speed and trajectory to get close enough without the rockets hitting your plane before you fire off the flares.

Yeah but them aiming it and hitting is a better conclusion for this commentary.
@boccci
@boccci 10 ай бұрын
@@koenvandamme6901 based on cursory research, the weapon fired was an early Stinger model (FIM 92A), originally developed with infrared-only targeting. Early IR was generally defeated by flares due to the fact that the targeting systems searched for any IR within its FOV. Flares would be fired, the targeting system had a chance to pick the flare instead of the engines (the next highest IR output signal), then the original target would try to exit the FOV. In cases such as the one was shown, the IR output would be dramatically different. Additionally, high humidity can negatively impact IR-only targeting - so the targeting being fooled by the flares is plausible. I cannot find any information on whether the Stinger had proximity triggers, but its reasonable to assume as the AIM-4 Falcon had the capability a few years earlier. Interestingly, the FIM 92 switched from being an infrared-only seeking missile to UV and IR dual-seeking - *specifically to defeat flares*. This was designated the FIM 92B, and all later models can use this mode. I cannot seem to find any visual discrepancies between the models, but Zaire troops at the time appear to be utilizing both outdated American and Soviet arms, so a 92A is very plausible. Thus, without any real authority on the subject, I think the scene is shockingly close to realistic - provided the launcher was not, in fact, the 92B.

Fun fact: it turns out that gorillas never learned sign language. The people teaching them didn't even know sign language - they just learned some signs and assumed that this was enough. And the apes were only brute forcing reactions they want by trying every sign they learned that was vaguely relating to what they wanted. So, we essentially taught the apes tricks and then exaggerated their language skills.

@@1WEareBUFO1 I'm not sure if you're joking or not, because there's a lot of people who are actually saying that. But I know deaf people aren't doing it for attention. There's a number of significant differences between how apes use hand signs and how deaf people do. Apes never learn proper sentence structure, they don't sign to themselves (which deaf people do in the same way hearing people will talk to themselves), and the apes do not se signs except to get something they want (they never express complex ideas). It's a pretty big difference.

Something about this movie is so nostalgic despite never having seen it before. It feels so deeply "90s adventure movie" in a way that just _being_ a 90s adventure movie shouldn't let it accomplish.

I spent a lot of time in scouts, and those tents are designed to open like that every single time. The only problem with them is that they store in a disk shape that’s really awkward to carry, and it’s a pain in the ass to fold them back into their bag.

Wasting a perfectly good Campbell is a crime! And showing him in the beginning only to switch to Mr. no personality later on made it even worse. At least we got something out of Ernie Hudson (even if it should have been more) and a crazy Tim Curry ...

I am convinced now that during the 90s some big wig in Hollyweird had it in for Bruce Campbell. The dude had leading man looks and for some reason couldn't catch a break anywhere outside of Raimi's projects. It cannot be simply because Army of Darkness under performed at the box-office.

A herkimer diamond is a type of quartz crystal that looks like a diamond. It's like the diamond version of fool's gold. So naming the diamond-seeking villain Herkimer is probably a reference to that.
