That bothered me too. If nature reclaimed the planet and people haven't been polluting it for a thousand years... There should be plenty of oxygen. In fact, all those larger animals implies there should be more oxygen, since it's a consistent pattern that larger animals and insects come with oxygen booms, if what I remember from science class still holds up.

Better plot: Instead of the kid discarding all fear, have his father discover fear again after seeing his son in grave danger for so long. Have the father rescue the kid because the kid isn't ready to defend himself yet, and that's okay; he's a child. Have the father realize that fear is part of our nature and what makes us human, and we shouldn't let some random alien race take said humanity away from us. Have the father love his kid better after realizing how scared he must have been for all these years thinking he's failing his father. And I know 'the usaahhh' only reacts to fear and not feeling it makes you invincible, but guess what? If the kid didn't feel any fear when all those animals attacked him, he'd be toast. He wouldn't try to flee or defend himself because he woudn't feel like there's anything at stake and it would all be his dad's fault if he was eaten alive. If the kid really would've 'gotten over his fear', he would've told his dad what a piece of shit father he is.

There was so much potential with cypher. Have him be emotional at first, family love him for it, then he had to ghost to save humanity, which changes him into the person we see. Have it take a toll on his family relationship, have it be a side plot, and have moments where it takes trauma and extreme measures to show emotion, like the moment where his kid was about to jump down the waterfall. Seeing him break character will be emotional as he begs his son to return home. Have the conclusion of his arc finding the ability to control his fear, and balance out his emotions together. It's unfortunate that we never see that

So this movie is supposed to take place on Earth a thousand years in the future, but the fact that it's Earth is completely inconsequential when you think about it. We never see the ruined remains of cities, piles of garbage, or really anything that makes the fact that it's Earth tie into the plot in any meaningful way. If this movie took place entirely on some unknown alien planet, it wouldn't have made any difference. Actually, it would have made more sense if it wasn't Earth, because an eagle with a ten-foot wingspan wouldn't have evolved in the thousand years that humans had been off the planet. So not only is the fact that it takes place on Earth completely pointless, it also makes the movie seem less credible.
@unmessable12

Dr Shaym not to mention even if there was time for evolution to happen (which there isn't), animals wouldn't generally get bigger than what we already have as the oxygen in the air is significantly lower compared to the prehistoric eras: it's why insects have got smaller and Jurassic Park will never ever happen because the dinosaurs would all suffocate. :(

+White People From what some sources say, the original version of this movie even was supposed to be on Earth and the Dad gets injured on a camping trip, communication over walkie-talkie, etc. Think of how much more coherent this story would be based on that alone. - None of the forced futuristic Sci-Fi stuff (aliens, the tech, etc) - Ship Crash landing remedied as simply a broken Cell Phone and them in the woods - Logical reason the creatures are dangerous rather than evolving to kill a species not present - Effects would be less overused and fake as shit.

When Will Smith says "the atmosphere above your current location is causing electrical interference with the beacon", I can't help but think that when Jaden looked at the volcano, he didn't really telepathically understand his dad, he really just looked at the volcano and thought "man, it would make me look so cool if I climbed up a volcano. Hell yeah, I'll do that" and then just tried the beacon while up there just in case lol.

Kyle De'Larouche I would understand the sense of touch aspect to your point but to counter it, they are primal beasts. They think and experience everything on a different level than higher functioning sentient beings. I don't understand why that was put into the because a creature/being/beast, whatever you want to call it, would find no practical, logical or rational value this. If anything, if it was by sense of touch, it would be more of a waste of time and time ties into survival.
@WondrousLanternProductions
@WondrousLanternProductions 10 жыл бұрын
Kyle De'Larouche I'm not trying to be rude to what you are saying but that does not make sense. You are saying that regular creatures die off quicker, sure, let's go with that just for the movie's sake however, you contradicted your own point by stating "the damn thing would starve to death as it can only smell/sense human fear pheromones, doesn't have eyes or a regular nose either" which makes it way more capable of dying off quicker because it lacks so many advantages that make regular creatures or predators superior. Also, going back on the point of saying that regular creatures would die off obviously makes no sense in the movie anyway. At the end, you clearly see whales in the ocean. Whale = regular creature. Not to mention that the only special properties that the birds had were that they were larger. The primates that were chasing Jaden's character seemed no larger than regular and in fact only seemed to be like normal primates to be honest.

@@meangreen8873, I had the same question, so I did some research and I think the difference is in the goal of the film. From my research, American (or Hollywood) style movies generally prioritize entertainment and making the audience feel for the sake of feeling, while European films prioritize messages and commentary, using audience emotional manipulation accordingly. Shamylan has chosen a very bold film making philosophy, taking into consideration none of those things, opting instead to focus on wasting as much money as possible, while making the end result look like a student film project. He's a film-breaking genius.

I've read Moby Dick and I can assure you there's really no connection between this movie and that book. Moby Dick is basically the story of a madman who drags his ship and crew down with him and his obsessive hatred for the animal that bit off his leg. He doesn't care about his whaling business, he doesn't care about the wellbeing of his crew, he only wants revenge, even thought there's no logic behind his hatred for Moby Dick. (after all, Moby Dick is simply an animal, there was no real concious intent behind him biting off Ahab's leg.) I see no connection between anything in this movie and Moby Dick. In fact, judging by what Will Smith said, I wonder if he even read Moby Dick himself. There's no inviromental message in Moby Dick, in the times it was written people weren't that concerned with the issues of whaling yet.

I just realized something that made me even more annoyed at this movie. Shouldn't remnants of human cities still exist after a 1000 years? The movie would have been much more interesting if at least a part of it took place in the ruins of a city abandoned for a milennia, overtaken by nature and animals. But instead we got a generic jungle. Fuck this movie.

I asked the same question once. Someone responded to me by saying that the cold temperatures would make the structures decay faster. I don't know how accurate that would be here, seeing as how the movie never explains how the planet is capable of freezing over at night, or when it started doing that in the first place. Then again, the greenery is able to survive it, so I have no clue.

Are they warriors that are supposed to attack, or just creatures? Are they loyal to the aliens and just wanna help out? Are they able to reason? How are they supposed to tell what is hurting it? Also, why don't the aliens try and understand the human race??? Why don't they capture and study humans so they could make better weapons to exterminate them? Why are they attacking at all?! Why arent the aliens attacking the humans themselves? Couldn't the aliens just nuke the humans? So many questions!

9:20 Will obviously had no idea what he was talking about. To me, Moby Dick represents Cypher Raige's crusade against the Ursa and how far he is willing to go for it - losing his ability to feel emotions and connect with his family, basically crippling himself emotionally and even losing his daughter. In a way, Cypher Raige is Ahab and the Ursa are Moby Dick. It's not about the whaling and never was. The whale, like the Ursa was an object of fixation. Now as Cypher stands to lose his son, he needs to decide whether or not he will continue with his obsession or allow his emotions to help him reach and guide his son. That's also the symbolism of the one legged man standing up to salute him (ahab had only one leg) as a possible future for Cypher Raige. Just like in Moby Dick, Ahab is first pictured as someone dedicated, but in the end it's quite clear his consumed by his obsessions. Cypher Raige manages to pull out of it though, and in the end completes a circle by standing up for his son, who he now looks up to, who is able to keep anchored to his emotions, but also Ghost to achieve his goals. This is what I feel the Moby Dick motif is. I feel it was poorly conveyed in the movie and badly represented everywhere else. Especially by the cast who didn't understand this at all and had never read the book.

Well as an acting student I can answer that for you, just from my perspective. Many actors are taught to not be afraid to look silly. To not restrict ourselves with the inhibitions that a general member of society would have. Earlier in my education, my classes often included games and funny vocal and improv exercises. Acting is by nature silly. We're playing people who are not ourselves in funny costumes or saying weird things. But we do it because there is a beauty in it. There is childlike imagination in allowing the fictional circumstances to enthrall you. It's an incredible experience to live and breathe in a world that transcends the limits of our mundane reality. The simple answer is some people see the green screen, but when living in the moment as an actor you're not seeing it at all
@vegan4theanimals
@vegan4theanimals 10 жыл бұрын
That was very interesting and thanks for sharing it with me. I just think, coming from the standpoint of someone who's unfamiliar on the preparation and mindset the actors go through beforehand, that it's silly. Like, if you were working with puppets you know what the monsters are or whatever but if you're just in a green screen are you totally clueless? or do they show before what you'll be encountering? Lol honestly I was trying to make a funny comment but I'm legitimately interested now.

ZACKnirvana Actors are supposed to be using their imaginations for it. I've been in school for acting for two years myself, and there's a lot of it going into training to imagine something being there that isn't there. We live in a world were imagination isn't being used as often anymore, because we have so much technology. But like grevelo99, there's a childlike quality to the acting. As a kid, you LOVED pretending to run away from a monster that wasn't there. It's basically the same princip.

I don't really feel any desperation to get a "waiter job". Yes some actors have to do that to make ends meet until they manage to get steady work, but a lot do eventually get work. It's pretty easy to call art pretentious to excuse the fact that you're not creative, even though art has defined society for literally millennia. Please vacate the planet you ignorant twat.

I thought this was supposed to be a coming of age/overcoming adversity film - that Jaden would eventually differ from his father in a unique way that makes him able to succeed and thus win the admiration and respect of his father.... but a fucking bird saved him.... by treating him like a helpless baby chick. And he wouldn't have succeeded without this helpful bird. This defeats the movie's goal. What the fuck? To be perfectly honest though, the only character I had a hint of emotional attachment towards this entire time was momma bird. Wonder if the bird fed him, too.
@BewbsOP
@BewbsOP 2 жыл бұрын
I legitimately think you're right about their roles being reversed. Not only because will is a better actor and would perform better as the emotional one, but in a plot sense too. Just imagine the roles reversed. It would take alot of plot and lore tweaks, but I think it would legitimately be a good story. Imagine, his son, born without the ability to feel emotion, watches his family slaughtered by an alien beast. He is forced, sad and afraid to leave young child behind with broken legs. His only son emotionlessly guiding him through an alien land as he tries desperately not to break, with every setback bringing him closer to a breakdown. His son slowly teaching him how to separate himself from his emotions, and when push comes to shove, he does it. He succeeds in breaking away from emotion but in so doing loses the ability to feel emotions. By saving his son, he loses him. He loses his ability to care and to love. After being saved, the two teach the remaining humans how to stop feeling fear. In order for them to save humanity, they had to lose their humanity.

DukeofBlasphemy i couldn't watch that clip without feeling so terrible for Jayden he is was just trying to make a joke he was on a chat show and its clearly nerve raking and the fact that Will just cackled away as well, seriously doubting his parenting skills at this point :/

When you're dumb, but everyone tells you you're a genius, you come to believe it... especially when everyone around you is even stupider. I think Jayden realized this for the first time when that blithering moron asked him if any of the animals were real. His thoughts at that moment, "Oh my god... I've been around idiots this whole time... and I'm one of them." It was a sobering epiphany.

One thing out of many problems in this movie is the emotion thing. Sure, it's been mentioned before, but instead of feeling fear, instead of being stoic, why not use any other emotion? Run around slicing the alien monster things while laughing, or screaming in anger. And if these things can hear you, then just grin or sneer as you slice them to bits. Not showing fear doesn't mean you've lost your soul. And besides all that, why not just have an event in the past which put Will Smith into some sort of trauma-induced state of mind where he can't emote. Or even have him gain some sort of brain damage so feeling fear, happiness, ect. is impossible for him.

13:40 I've watched this whole review like at least 9 or 10 times through the years and have never realized that edit. I'm just now excited to keep rewatching these reviews and find other things I haven't noticed before. These videos just keep giving.

Just got to where Will Smith is talking about "Moby Dick"... I don't think I've ever seen someone try that hard to make up BS on the spot. High school students trying to come up with excuses for why they missed class have been less forced. Did they think about *any part* of this movie before they started shooting?

+Roy Unit It was so cringy because the environment has fuck all to do with the story. If anything it's glorifying humans killing animals bigger than us.

There actually is almost no connection between Moby Dick and the environnement. Yes, it talks about wailing, but it's more about the chase between a man and a whale, vengeance, the descent into madness, and maybe a little bit about the fight for power between man and nature. In no point of the book does it talk about the extinction of whales (because it wasn't a thing when it was written), or does it have a environmental reflexion. (spoiler) In any case, the whale wins at the end, and we really don't pity the whale (which is a killer)
