Gents, I listen to every pod, and I have to say I am a full 100% fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs. All this to say, I don't think you should be picking sides between any of the management of the Leafs. All your comments today just make me believe that you think Shanahan is the bad guy, and Dubas is the good guy, and there seems to be no middle ground. I really don't care who is right or who is wrong in this, I just want my team to win.

It’s been like this the last few shows where they’re very ‘pro-Dubas’ , end of the day he wasn’t good enough, only one playoff round win in 5 years as GM, and whether people agreed with how he was let go or not it’s time to move on
@whoopass2rb
@whoopass2rb Жыл бұрын
Honestly I think they would have stuck with Dubas and that would have been perfectly fine. But when Dubas played his leverage the wrong way, how can Shanahan not turn around and fire him? According to some of the reports, he was asking for 33% more money and more autonomy, seemingly out of nowhere if you're to believe Shanahan. I'm not saying the decision is right given the aftermath. But clearly one of Dubas or Shanahan ends up going when an ultimatum like that is presented. If Shanahan gave Dubas what he wanted, eventually the board looks at Shanahan and removes him. It was a lose-lose situation and likely because tampering took place. You can't tell me Dubas does that not knowing that he had qualifying offers coming from other areas (Pit and Ott). No one wants to bring up that news but clearly something fishy went down there. Shanahan is not a saint here, but I don't think Dubas' hands are quite clean either.
@LordGrantius
@LordGrantius Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I understand your point. If I want my team to win, I'm looking at management to build a winning team; coaches to bring the best out of the combination of players; and players to do their job. I will admit that I am just the last few months getting back into hockey, so I'm not 100% on things. I'm also not a Leafs fan. But, I saw a stellar Leafs team, a group of excellent players doing very well - that is credit to management. I then saw a spectacular second round collapse where, in my opinion, it seems obvious the failure point was the players. Now, what do we do about it? Management likely needs to move players. This is where the conflict between Dubas and Shanahan matters, and how it is resolved directly matters to Leafs fans. If Dubas was on the right track and we could trust him to make the right moves, then Shanahan turfing him means Leafs fans might have to endure a worse season next year. If Dubas however was just being greedy and Shanahan has the reins, then maybe the right moves will be made after all. I do however agree with the guys, if those moves need to be made, the new GM will either be Shanahans puppet (which means a weak GM and bad things for the future) or there won't be enough time to make those moves... and Leafs fans suffer, their team overburdened with players that are too expensive for their playoff performance
@sjohn4299
@sjohn4299 Жыл бұрын
@@whoopass2rb yup and end of the day did Dubas truly deserve more power? Just one series win in 5 seasons as GM and they’re in this cap mess and contract situation with Matthews cause of Dubas. If he won a cup then sure I get it, but the results haven’t been there

Let's not forget, Bunting got 3 games despite having no history of suspensions... Meanwhile since then we've had broken necks on hits from behind, brutal headshots, multiple intentional attempts to injure players, etc... Seriously, I don't think Bunting's hit would make it into the "Top 5 Dirty Plays of the Playoffs" video and I'm not even convinced he'd make the dishonorable mentions for it either.

What made that hit so bad wasn't the hit in a vacuum - it was the fact that Cernak never came close to the puck the whole play and got nothing but head when he blind sided him.. yeah he probably should have gotten 2 but that's what you get when you're a rat who isn't a star
@whoopass2rb
@whoopass2rb Жыл бұрын
@@KyleMacSkill You mean like the Makar hit that only got 1 game enough though it was after a play, with an unsuspecting player, from behind? Or how about The Petro slash that was not only a deliberate attempt to injure a player, it was also away from the puck and the play was dead from a goal being scored, the ref's blowing the whistle. Oh that got 1 game as well... hmmm. The only reason why Benn has gotten multiple games is because they finally decided his history (that apparently isn't significant or a factor here) is a factor. Guy slashed his way to 2 fines last year, clearly fines didn't work. This year they said screw it, the cross check gets suspended. AND GOOD ON THEM. We can stand behind decisions when they are reflective of wanting to remove the behaviour from the game. Too many people look at the complaint regarding the Bunting situation and think it's just leaf fans complaining. Forget it being the leafs or from leaf fans - where's the consistency to treat non-hockey plays, with intents to injure, the way they looked at the Bunting hit? That's the issue everyone has, and it's a legit criticism. Bunting deserved 3 games. But in that same go, Petro probably deserved more than 1. Makar might have deserved more than 1 but I'm fine on it being only 1. Eberle deserved at least 1 and got nothing, like wow.

On the Sabres: throughout that conversation, as you list the names that Sabres GM’s surrounded Eichel with, it became clear that it wasn’t on the management. The culture was horrendous. Jack Eichel requesting a trade before being demanding the C is clearly direct reason for that. It wasn’t about the players surrounding Eichel, it was the type of person he was in Buffalo. He needed to leave Buffalo to mature. Buffalo needed to get rid of him to rid the locker room of toxicity.

@KevynKing
@KevynKing Жыл бұрын
Honestly, the injury sustained to the player shouldn't be taken into consideration. It should be the action alone. Bunting should've gotten the 3 games he did cause he elbowed Cernak in the head, he shouldn't have been given less if Cernak happened to not be injured. Cause the only reason you'd elbow someone in the head is to hurt them. Same with why I think it's BS Pietro didn't get more for the slash on Leon, cause the only reason you do that is to try and injure them. He just happened to fail and not injure him. Benn cross checked a dude in the jaw and neck, he got lucky that Stone didn't get seriously fucked up.
@C0achMcgurk
@C0achMcgurk Жыл бұрын
@@KevynKing yeah but intent (though you can never really meausre it 100% accurately in hoceky) doesnt equal in severity to the actual action and its impact on the team. Also even from a legal point of view (though it could differ from country to country and what exactly we are discussing) "attempt" =/= "the actual thing". If Bunting was disqualified for the time Cernak is out , it would definately disincentivize other players (Benn, Piatro) to injure others - if you know its eye for eye , whats the point?

I disagree about Eichel. Not the part about him being right about controlling his health (I think most fan were ok about that even in the moment tbh), but I think it's disingenuous to say that fans are disrespecting him and that he should be view among the best of the league. Eichel is a great player, but his best season ever was 82pts, that's just not in the same galaxy as the 100pts guys that Jesse was mentioning. On top of that Eichel because of injuries have yet to reach a 70pts or a 30goal season in the last 3 season. Obviously he won't be at the forefront of the discussion about the best players. Respect come after the great performance, not before. Eichel will get back his hockey respect of 4 years ago, but he need a bit more time, he just got back to form.

The points that Steve's making about officiating are completely valid. However, when you blame the refs for your team getting embarrassed in the playoffs when every team deals with the bad officiating, you're whining. It shouldn't be that difficult for him to understand.

I'm so tired of the it's all Justin Holl's fault scapegoat bit. Without Holl the Leafs were incapable of retrieving a puck. What cost the Leafs was the refusal to get in front of the net in front of the goaltenders face and the core not scoring. None of that has to do with Holl. Justin Holl didn't destroy their playoff hopes, the forward group did that because they forgot how to play hockey.

You guys keep putting it on Shanahan (saying he made an emotional decision) to fire Dubas. It could be the opposite. When no one knew who Dubas was, Shanahan took a chance on him and made him GM of the Marlies. After some success, he was made AGM of the Leafs. When the time to pick the GM came around, many wanted to keep Lou or promote Hunter, but Shanny picked Dubas. Over the last few years, everyone kept saying to get rid of Dubas, but he didn't. It's quite likely the board wanted to get rid of him too, but like every time before this, Shanny backed his guy. Then the press conference happened and the guy you've stuck your neck out for the past 9 years says he might not want to come back now. Then he has his agent come to you a few days later asking for full autonomy and 50% more money than what was originally going to be offered (which was already double what he was being paid). Then we also hear Dubas was trying to get Shanahan removed from Hockey Operations. The guy Shanny supported and backed for nine years played games and betrayed him. I don't blame Shanny for firing him. Dubas was trying to portray himself as some highly successful GM that won 2 cups, a finals and a couple of deep runs in the 5 years he was GM. They got lucky to beat Tampa this year for their first playoff round win in 19 years. They outplayed Tampa in 1 game and made a nice comeback in another. They got spanked in the 2nd round vs Florida. The team is built wrong. Too many chefs, not enough line cooks, servers, waiters, busboys and dishwashers. It takes a team to win a cup, the Leafs have a collection of really good individuals. Whichever GM candidate can figure out how to re-sign Matthews and Marner to reasonable contracts and trade Nylander and Tavares is who you should hire. You can't win with those four. Not enough money to fill the roster with other quality players to complement them.

He just wanted to finally be able to take the reigns and be respected as a real gm and not have to be basically shanahan's assistant still. He wanted to finally be able to be the boss shanny had been training him to be, and shanahan got offended by it. Guerin had never been a gm in the nhl, and he still didn't have to go through someone else when he was made gm of the Wild. He got to make his own decisions right off of the bat

@@JarradBruessel32 The Leafs aren't owned by a person. If that's what Dubas wants, he'll have to go elsewhere and work for a team owned by one guy. The Leafs are a multi-billion organization and big moves need to be approved by the board. He may not like that, but that's standard for large corporations. He should have known that coming in.

@@jeffer1101 shanahan isn't a part of the board that was approving the deals. He was having dubas do the ground work then took credit for dubas's work. He was nothing more than a middle man. In Pittsburgh there is no sole owner either, but he will be able to go directly to the owners and get approval. He doesn't need to go through anyone. Shanahan didn't want that

My team was one of the first to be out of the playoff race this season. And I gotta say, I agree that playoff hockey is just awesome. It's been so nice to just watch without any specific cheering and just enjoy hockey. I mean, I am anti-vegas, but even those games are just good, fun to watch games.

Btw, for a lot of these southern markets (dallas,Carolina,fla) people are used to the atmosphere of college football which is by far the predominant sport here. Those fans are wild its just a matter of getting them to care about hockey but if you can get them in there they will blow your arena up.

Both Steve and Jesse are right. Anaheim is close enough to LA that it's pretty much like having two local NHL teams BUT Anaheim is not a part of LA county at all and would never be considered as such.
@RobertAndruszko

IF you consider the Angels and the Dodgers both in LA (Jessie) (stadiums 30.5 miles apart) you have to consider the Ducks (who literally play across the freeway) and the Kings in LA (stadiums 30.4 miles apart). But no, you shouldn't consider either Anaheim team Los Angeles. But it IS like having multiple teams in the same market. Kinda. Sorta. Vaugely. Steve: Sidenote Anaheim has Disneyland. SO it's REALLY not part of Los Angeles. Not even same county.

I feel like the arenas being full in the conference finals was expected, when teams are good people show up. I'm curious to see the TV numbers because not only are they less popular teams, but both series have not been that interesting, sure games have been close but like both had 3-0 leads and its always better when its competitive.
