I should clarify that this isn't a universal roll-out. They are A/B testing the UI among users, so you might have it for a little while only for it to eventually revert back to the original layout.

For me it has the oh so beneficial effect of making me not want to interact with the comments, I always use theater mode, and it also has the effect of making me just downright ignoring scrolling down. Before I could at least view the sidebar for potential interesting videos to watch next and to check out the comments, now I either want to skip back to my subscriptions, or just move on and do something else.

I found a remedy that's smooth and safe, but U2 won't let me post comments about it, even though it's presented in a video right here on the platform! I tried a dozen times (with my other profile) and without exception those comments were auta-m*ted or cropped out. Even when I tried to conceal it a bit and tweaked the wording to get through their steel grille, it got detected.

The one thing the tablet UI has over the traditional UI is that you can view and scroll through comments while still watching the video. It's a good feature but the way they did it on desktop seems kind of janky.

This horrible "update" was just inflicted upon me today. Thinking that I had somehow inadvertently caused it, I've been scrambling around with all of the settings and such trying to figure out how to make it go back to the way that it was (i.e. good). I finally came across your video ... at least now I know what happened, so I thank you for that.

the actual reason is that the higher ups dont want anything risky done to the site, but they want changes, so the devs only really have 2 choices, being rework systems that dont need reworked, or change the UI, and so they choose the UI most of the time.

So, I got that update a month ago, and I also thought it was ugly. I ended up sending a message to the people at KZfaq saying that it didn't look good and the "hit that like buttom down below" wouldn't make any sense for new users and, believe it or not, one or two weeks later, it was normal again. I don't know if they actually listened to me, but as I'm writing this comment, my layout looks the same as 3 months ago

I’m a person who uses mobile most of the time, and I got mad when they drastically altered the coloring and design of the ui. So I commented on one of KZfaq’s own videos asking to change it. And it changed, for a little bit anyways. I don’t mind the current ui now, but knowing KZfaq it will change soon enough

Same thing happened on my end. Got it randomly mid using the site. Thought I clicked a button on my keyboard or something and fucked something up. Just to be stuck with this god awful layout design. Then for no reason it just reverted back a bit later. Soooooo? Glad it's not a disgusting mess ,but also huh?

I also received this update and spent many hours trying to change my font size and toggling between settings trying to restore things the way they were. There was no notice that there was an update or that things were changing, I moderate for a fair number of KZfaq channels and I need to be able to see the chat, the amount of viewers and the amount of likes all at the same time, and having those interactions hidden under the live chat is ridiculous. I can pop out the chat and put it in a separate tab, but I would appreciate the option of picking and choosing what I do need to see, and if people don't want to see the buttons let them have the option to turn them off, that would not be hard to program at all. I will be investigating extensions that let me revert to an older KZfaq version.

The irony is that with this new layout, I'd see FAR FEWER recommendations. because I'm not scrolling for that shit, if I click a recommended video it's because it saw it in the corner of my eye and it caught my attention. having a string of 8 on the side, more if I scroll to comment, exposes me to far more!

Correct. Just a few years back It was even smooth and easy to post links to stuff you had found outside of the platform - pictures, news articles, blog posts etc, to explain, entertain or make your comments better. That's gone now: it's become impossible to post any kind of links pointing beyond the platform itself, unless you're the channel owner. YT is setting up a "walled garden" kind of place. There's an increasing need for a platform where we can talk about the Tube and its videos, and other media, OUTSIDE of Ut*be!

they're trying to make youtube's website more like youtube on mobile. spotify did this a while back too. all companies need to understand that web and mobile are two very different platforms and that they both need to be designed for accordingly, especially companies as big as google.

I found this video because I 'got it' too a few days ago and was hoping to find a solution on how to make it go away. I did 'report it' and added a 'disappointed' comment on this video - along with saying how it will help me reduce my YT viewing time, because it is so annoying. Does KZfaq underestimate just how much people check and use the comments section on videos?? Heck, a lot of people will click on a video and immediately go to the comments section! Minimizing the comments to an awkward sidebar like that is HORRIBLE. I know with many previous changes people are always like "Will this KILL KZfaq??" and it never actually does, but think about it, none of those were ever actually majorly impactful to the standard user experience, not even something like the Dislike counter. Barely anything actually changed. THIS on the other hand impacts that EXTREMELY! So I genuinely wonder how much this will harm the non-shorts-doomscrollers part of KZfaq's userbase and thus how much negative impact this will have on KZfaq. I hope it's a lot so that they revert it but...I'm not optimistic there. I can't underestimate peoples' ability to just put up with awful crap no matter how bad it is.

i'm pretty sure this new layout is meant to discourage you from looking at comments in favor of paying more attention to the recommended videos. the size of the thumbnails on its own should explain everything it has to say.

My complaint with youtube is that on mobile we can "full screen" the comments section, but then they stop the video if you do that. They just want the video playing so long as you're staring at it. I wanna listen to the video and read the comments dang it.

Why are they doing this?! If you have a business and everything works fine just as they are, don't change anything! It's not like people will get bored of the old layout and will move to a different platform. If no one asked for any changes, don't make changes to your website!

As a designer and developer, this is one of the worst user interface concepts I have encountered in a long time. I'm wondering if they did this because people had the option to not have suggested videos show up on their home screen, so to counteract that, they decided to force the "suggested" videos under every damn video you want and shove the comments away. Two things I do when watching a video (1) Watch the video (2) scroll though the comments. Now, comments are meaningless and try to watch the video in any mode (the exception to full screen), the thumbnails from suggested videos are extremely distracting. I disabled the suggested videos on the home page for a reason--but it looks like Google decided to give us the middle finger.

Seems so. I think the rationale from the executives is that rather than encourage me to engage via an ample and sensible layout, which makes them no money as instead of watching another video I'm typing this PLUS if anyone reads it that further takes away from ad filled 'content' being watched, they'd rather encourage more clicks per minute or whatever all important metric their greedy bloodsucking overlords demand be increased by x quarter of x year.

No, they've done it to make us not write/read comments... Now it's hard to even write comment to not be deleted automatically, for no good reason., so they want to make it even less convenient...We should get only one correct, mainstream message and do not share, express or exchange our opinions...

The new layout is very hard to focus on the primary video panel. The window is now smallerr and as you resize it, the thumbnails continue to take screen space. You are 100% right, the new layout is awful!

I didn't even complain that bad when they removed dislikes but this is just BAD. You can't focus on the video itself with the thumbnails right on the bottom. It's like watching a mosaic

Just use the KZfaq Redux extension, it returns the old 2000s layout and ive used it for years youtube keeps just ruining their layout more and more so

I saw this and it was AWFUL, the update hadn't hit me yet but when it does, i'm definitely finding an extension to revert the old ui. I will say though, I don't mind the idea of the comments on the side. The idea is fine, it will take time to get used to, but the execution is so poor.

I really recommend CustomTube, not only does it let you revert to previous KZfaq layouts (which not only avoids this awful fuckup but also futureproofs from whatever garbage YT will cook next), but it also lets you remove irrelevant search results

On a side note, I hate the new "feature" that has OUTRIGHT hidden playlists from the sidebar, you need to go to the playlists button, then pick a playlist, then use the sidebar of the view to select a video in the playlist.

when i got it i used my blockers to block most the entire recommended videos section along with some other annoying things and not to long after it was reverted back. i got so pissed that they took the rollout and rolled it back in for me

I just got this rollout today. Like many others, I immediately began looking for workarounds. Not too keen on downloading fixes which might become obsolete or not work. I quick fix is merely to increase zoom (from settings and more - to the top right on my browser) until the messages just drops out of view on the annoying right column. It was 150% for me. The messages are still there but you have to scroll below the advertised content to the bottom of the page to see them (displayed across the page as usual). Obviously the message is itself zoomed (not too bad and preferable to have to constantly scroll down that ridiculous small right hand box I was presented with). Bonus, you can scroll past the advertised content and still play the video while you read the messages. If desperate, I guess you could have two tabs open or two windows even - one to play the video, the other to read the messages as you go along. Just hope you are right, and they revert me back.

The youtube layout went from this without any video recommendations then went back to the way it was and now just today it went back to this weird layout. Whatever this was about if it's about the watch time it's having the opposite effect because now I'm asking myself what the deuce happened and why? Just looking for answers.

This is such a messy change. The important stuff that was a perfect size underneath the videos are now cramped on the side with HUGE recommended videos on the bottom. It ruins the entire flow of scrolling on youtube while watching a video. I don't want to be looking at a website designed for a tablet.
